Elizabeth (Alaska) Is HathiTrust digital library an acceptable source for book information? I would think we would view it much like WorldCat and some national libraries.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Bump (asked over the weekend, probably got lost in the volume)

Book data (text) should be ok. However, it appears that they are deliberately making it difficult to extract covers, so covers would likely not be.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks, Rivka. I've had occasion to look at, but found information elsewhere to confirm. It's good to know I can take it, even if not the covers. Darn it getting those old covers anyway!

Access and Use Policies

"Users are encouraged to cite and link to digital content and are free to do so without asking for permission. Depending on the source of the digitized work, licenses or other contractual terms may restrict further distribution or other uses. Please consult the "Access and Use" statement included in the PageTurner view for each item (in the sidebar to the left of the viewing area, next to the "Copyright" heading), for volume-specific information."

"Use: HathiTrust does not have authority to grant or deny permissions to use images from volumes that are in the public domain or open access."

This seems, to me, to be saying that the DATA is public domain, but that the content may or may not be. Also, international librarians may need to be aware that HT modifies your access based on your IP and legal considerations based on location.

These days many sites do that.

Rivka, do you mean 'difficult for scripts'? The books I've looked at seem OK for manually extracting covers.

Does it matter that many of the covers and internal pages have "Digitized by Google" on them.

All in all it looks like a great site for reading on. Titles like "Report on the causes of municipal corruption in San Francisco" must be fun...

Not the ones I looked at. They were meant to be viewed, not extracted. (If you have to take a screenshot, a site doesn't usually mean you to extract images.) And yes, the digitized by Google is an issue.

As I said, covers would be a problem.

I haven't come across any that need a screen capture.

If the record says "Full View" then in Firefox most of the covers (and internal pages) will save just with a right click.

This one is a "Digitized by Internet Archive" not Google.

right click on any page and it saves.

Is "Digitized by Internet Archive" also frowned upon?

That isn't a cover - at least not what I understand is a cover.

All the pages in the scanned book, including the cover, are stored in a sort-of-pdf file.

Covers from that site appear to be a problem.
