Read-a-Thon #3 - Team Pie
I've put both my books in the spreadsheet, but I can make changes if we need to.

Great, Jody, Marina and Trish!It is a bit involved, Trish - is there something specifically you're confused about? I've had a bit longer to wrap my head around it, and it seems less confusing to me than the third quest did!
The thing that I was most confused by initially was that I thought the 5 of the publication years all had to be the same, and the 4 of the words in the title all had to be the same etc. But basically we have to read 5 books which each have the same year of publication as books we've already read. So it can be 5 different years, as long as the years are the same as years on the "books used to date" sheet. So just picking the first 5 different dates on the spreadsheet, you might choose to read another book from 2018, someone else a book from 1899, someone else a book from 2007, someone else might choose a book from 2015 and someone else from 1997.
Same with the words in the title - the 4 books we read to cover this each need to have a word in them (other than A, AN or THE) that matches words in the books we've already read. But the 4 books we read to cover this don't need to have the same word in each of their titles. So choosing the first 4 (English, for my sake!) books on the spreadsheet again as an example, you could choose a book with the word "Paris" in the title, I might choose a book with the word "Darkness" in the title, someone else might read a book with "Library" in the title, and someone else might choose to read a book with "Naked" in the title. And of course people can use books in their own language, I would assume if you wanted to read a book translated with the same word in the title, that would count. I know Johanne read Drengen på toppen af bjerget, which was...was it The Boy on Top of the Mountain, so I guess I could read a book with "mountain" or "boy" in the title...
For the similar cover, someone needs to read a book that has a similar cover to a cover that we've already read, someone else needs to read a book with a similar cover to another book we've already read and someone else needs to read another book that has a similar cover to one of the books we've already read - so hopefully the covers in message 202 are the same as the covers we've already read. But let me know if you need me to change any covers for the books you read.
And same for the 2 books with a same setting OR author's country of birth, and the 1 book by the same author.
In addition to these books based on what we've previously read, we need to read 3 books referred to in the Read-a-thon games, or books by authors referred to in the Read-a-thon games - the Kickoff on Day 1, or the One Liners on Day 2, or the the 90s Kid Book Tag on Day 4, or the Title Scramble on Day 5. If you haven't played the games already, and you want to, now might be a good time, in case someone lets slip what the answers are!
Does that make any more sense?

It does. I've put in a couple of possibles - one's the sequel to one I read the day before yesterday, so would work for same author or similar cover. The other fits one or two things.
Morning Pies! Can the books from the RAT games be mentioned by anyone or just team members?Also do you think woman in headscarf is close enough to woman in hood? I'm definitely finishing The Testaments today, just need to have a look at where it fits.
I agree we should plan a bit more for this one. For the titles I agree that translated titles should count. It´s correct, Kathryn, I read Drengen på toppen af bjerget which is a direct translation of the original title: The Boy at the Top of the Mountain, so everything with "boy", "top" or "mountain" in any language should count.
If it´s a book that changed the title like Män som hatar kvinnor (means "men who hate women") that became The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in English, I think it should be a direct translation of the words in the title it was read in.
If the mods disgagree with this interpretation, please speak up
I´ll go and add English translations in the spreadsheet, for languages I understand.

What do you mean, Ellie? It will only be team members taking part in the RaT games. Or do you mean just the books the moderators use in their games? I think any book mentioned in the threads for the games is up for grabs, but I'll double-check.

That sounds reasonable to me, Johanne.
I'm struggling to get through The Beautiful Miscellaneous (it started well, but has dropped off in quality, in my opinion!), but am hoping to finish it before I go to bed. But for my next book, I might read Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen which was mentioned in one of the games. It wasn't on my list, but I've been thinking about reading it for a while.
I definitely understand it to be any books/authors mentioned in the readathon games by anyone.It´s worded like this:
Read 3 books [or books by authors] that are mentioned in a read-a-thon game.

Oh and I finished my audiobook Ud og stjæle heste (Out Stealing Horses) on my way to work. There are "horses" in the title and one already read with "pony". Grrr so close... I´ll see where it can go.

I always struggle with remembering the English title for this one, since it is so far fetched from the original one. (And in my humble opinion, the original "Men Who Hates Women" is so much more fitting to the book.

It makes more sense to me - I mean there are dates in there that are in the 1800's and 1930-something and 1974 - I figure it makes more sense to use those original dates of publication than to add more of the contemporary dates (there'll already be a lot of dates from the 2000's and 2010's), but if others disagree, we can change the dates to those of the editions read...

I added my current read, Som svaler kom de/They Came Like Swallows to the spreadsheet. It seems to only fit two criterias: - author born in US &
- similar cover (based on colour)

I am flying to Tromsø (North of Norway) this afternoon, so should get some good hours of reading in on the airport and on the flight. The rest of the weekend will mostly be spend socialising though.
I am almost finished with Dora Bruder that is set in Paris, France. We have another book set in France and one partly in Paris - don´t you think that works?Edit: The author is also from France - of course it works.

Did you enjoy the book? I read it many years ago, but remember loving it at that time. And it can potetially match with Jody's Hunger, as both are set in Norway, and written by Norwegian authors.

His books are the kind that stays with you afterwards, but you cen´t really put your finger on why.
And it worked well as audio. I´ve found that those types of dvælende // lingering(?) books with thoughts, pondering and nature work well as audio.
I didn´t see Hunger on the spreadsheet of read books? Was it not added yet?

I finished The Testaments! I loved it, highly entertaining (though I completely understand why those wanting something as literary as The Handmaid's Tale / Booker Prize worthy might be disappointed).I don't know where best to put it, I found it mentioned in the kick-off post or I could use the cover similarity. Which is going to be harder to fill?
I finished En meget fjern kyst. I used it for the same author, but if you want to move it feel free to do so :-)

But I think if we do like we´ve done so far - to put the different possibilities as well as choose one - we can always move them around.

I found The Handmaid´s tale really good, but a bit dry, so it sounds like I´ll enjoy Testaments
When I am finished with Dora Bruder, I will look at similar title books - it seems we have the least options for those, and I have a few that fit. I´ll just see what I am in the mood for.(Ii will have to wait till I´m off work and after a visit from my mum this afternoon....)

I just fixed up one of my authors - she was marked as UK born, but she was born in Brazil, so we have another option for that one now! I also amended the author who was marked as Germany/Switzerland to Germany (he was born in Münich). Not that there are a dearth of Swiss authors out there, but just in case anyone was planning on reading one ... almost seven years here and I still haven’t read Heidi! I’ll probably get deported soon. 😂

Q: For books that are already completed, does this mean only quest 1, 2, and 3? i.e. once someone finishes a book in quest 4 is it also eligible as "already completed"?

I am almost positive I saw Laura mention in a comment somewhere that books finished for Quest 4 could also be used.

I have my mother´s copies at home, I read those a lot when I a was a child. I am still a bit sad that the author´s name is not exactly the same as mine (Johanna/ Johanne)

I think we are all in agreement of this.
I finished The Beautiful Miscellaneous. I've put it in as same year as a couple of others - 2007, but I was just looking down the spreadsheet and I saw that Johanne's Boy at the Top of the Mountain has a mountain range on the cover, as does The Beautiful Miscellaneous, so I wondered whether maybe I should put it in for that? Do years seem easier to find than similar cover elements??
And Jody!! I agree with Johanne and Hilde - you have to read Heidi!!My copy, which I'm pretty sure was a second-hand one, is so old it's falling apart! But I think it might have been falling apart when I got it. I've only read it a couple of times, I think, but it is a lovely book. You're living my dream, Jody, because I always wanted to go and live in Switzerland when I was in high school, and I think Heidi might have had a large part to play in that dream!

I'm debating reading Lolita, which was one of the books in the Day 2 quiz. I'm not sure what sort of length it is, though, and whether I'll get it done in time.
Funnily enough I have a copy of Heidi (it’s now in my daughter’s bookcase) that I’ve had since I was a kid - waaaaaay before I moved here at age 36! Every time I see it, I think “Yeah I should read that” and then walk away. You’ve all convinced me to actually do it!Kathryn, it’s beautiful here, for sure, but wickedly expensive and the people are ... not the friendliest, at least where I am. The scenery makes up for it, most of the time. 😁

Great work on our 3rd quest and Kathryn, great work with the spreadsheet!
I'm listening to a short book: En meget fjern kyst. I should finish that one today. It can be used for at least 3 of the tasks related to books read by us Pies :-) Maybe 4 if you stretch it a bit...
Do we need to plan a bit more which books we use this time? I'm guessing it'll be more difficult to complete the same word task if we don't look for books to use for that one.
I was also thinking about starting De glemte børn which can be used for some of the tasks, but I can try and find another book if needed.
