Rather than being devastating or even leaving me feel uneasy, it felt smug and unnecessary atop the rest of this story, which was heading toward five stars for me. Maybe it was too built up in my mind. Other than the ending, I loved it. It was brutal and funny and I loved the characters. I'm not even a big fan of vampire tales, but this was inventive and compelling. For me, on top of a story so beautifully done, the tricky ending just didn't work. I listened to it on audio and (view spoiler)[ the author narrated it himself, which I usually think is a mistake. However, in this case the author is a performer and his voicing was excellent. When it was time for the reveal his voice changed entirely, and I remember sitting there, mouth literally hanging open afterwards. (hide spoiler)]

I don't ever listen to audio books, not my cup of tea, but in this scenario I bet it was pretty cool! 😊

Lisa and Vickie, I didn't get that at all from this on it (view spoiler)[being smug. I just thought it was a nice twist at the end. I did not go into this with a lot of hype so maybe that helps?

The narrator in the beginning of the book did mention to not trust anyone which is great to me when I think about it now. LOL!! (hide spoiler)]

The ending is definitely polarizing.

I initially marked the book down a star for it. However this book and the Suicide Motor Club keep popping into my mind in a good way. So I revised my review and uprated the book to 5 stars.

While I disagree with the technique, I can't fault the impact of its use.

I usually rate on impact 90% of the time. Technique is just icing on the cake.
I always rate the book after I’ve read it and think, “Will I remember this plot and characters two years from now?” And if yes, it’s likely to get a better score from me. The Lesser Dead definitely check that box.
