Yes. Eb was VERY difficult to write. I think it is easier to write a hateful character than one that is irritating. Let's face it. Eb can be aggravating. It is true that her fears chain her. My favorite scene is when she removes Brute's chains. In daring to remove them she removes her own.
It was tempting to soften her in a couple of scenes because I knew I risked alienating readers. But I needed to be true to the foolish girl. Besides, I truly believe that whenever humans put chains on their brothers and sisters - figuratively, in the case of doubtlings - great harm is also done to the ones who chain. More than any other fear, I think, Eb fears thinking with her own mind. She believes it is safer to think like her clan.
