Thank you for participating in this vote. It seems like we have a clear winner but feel free to keep voting.

Lynn Renee | 219 comments I just searched for Because She loves me on Amazon, and it happens to be part of the Kindle Unlimited program.

I think it might be best to make the last day of voting on Sunday night.

Christine (clt04) Ron, wow, great selection of winning novels to pick from. We can pick two? I vote for Because She Loves Me and Taunting the Dead.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Christine. I could say you can pick more than two if you want but we'll say two. The reason is that if Because She Loves Me wins, I will keep other books around that are voted for so that can be part of a vote for December. My feeling is that if you want to read Taunting of the Dead and if someone wants to read Delirious or I'll Find You, then there is no reason not to bring those books back. Like I said, I want to do things differently here and say that there is no winner take all.

I like that. I like the looks of all 5 of these books.

Jaksen Because She Loves Me and Delirious.

Just so there is no confusion, I should have posted this here instead of thoughts and ideas.

At this point, I don't see the need to keep the voting open and declare Mark Edwards the winner. We will be reading his book, Because She Loves Me, starting on November 15. I have been in touch with Mark and he said that he is happy that you voted for him and that he will join us on the threads and make comments while we read his book.

I will be changing some of the authors for a December group read in showcase. The other authors that were voted for will remain in showcase and will be considered for a December group read.
Thanks for voting. I think we have a really good theme going here by discovering new authors. It's great that they are happy to join us as we read their books as well.

message 20: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) I think these group reads of lesser known authors with the author making appearances on the discussion thread are just great, Ron. I look forward to reading Mark's book next month.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Christine. I want to be involved in helping people discover new authors. That's what Goodreads is all about and I hope that we can continue to do it together.

That is the best thing about Goodreads. I have read many books outside of my comfort zone and discovered some new authors from groups and recommendations on this site. Keep them coming.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy to do that Carla.

Jaksen One thing to possibly consider...

The availability of a book before voting.

For some of us, cost is no limit and we can easily afford a new or recently-released book. But for others, the library or used book is a better option. The book which won for November is so new I couldn't find it in two, huge library systems covering all of southeastern MA, (and several college libraries) and all of Cape Cod.

But, I will buy the book. I just hope that in the voting, older or more classic books are also featured as possibilities?

Agree. The Nov book is $4.99 on Amazon and though that may not seem like a lot of money, I rarely pay that much for a book. I generally use the library and occasionally pay a penny plus $3.99 postage thru Amazon for a used book.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I understand the feelings here. I would say that I have been in other groups and people have been frustrated because prices of books are higher in other group reads so I am trying to take that into consideration. If you remember, we did have a one day sale of Dear Daughter for $1.99. I do look at the prices of other books as well to see if it can be part of this group read in the future.
One thing to keep in mind is that if we do consider older and more classic books, then there is a good chance that we won't have the author available for a Q&A or have the ability to interact with them, especially if it's a big name like Lee Child.
In any case, I don't want to be the one picking out books here. I do go to the library and look at the books to see if some of them are available there for us. I think Nancy Bush is one of them but I'm happy to go to the library and see what kinds of books are available for our up and coming authors. I have seen some of Lisa Black's books as well.
If you want to have some books considered for a group read that are available in the library, my thought would be that you can book an older book in the bookshelf and I would put that in the group to be voted on along with other books as well. If an older book and a classic type book are getting a lot of votes, then we can always be set up for two group reads as well. If the older book wins, then we would read that book.
Again, I'm happy to make sure that everyone would be involved in a group read that everyone would enjoy.

Because I pay some $10 per mo. to Amazon, I get all the Amazon Prime books I want for no additional fee, so was delighted we picked Because She Loves Me, as I've been wanting to read a Mark Edwards book & share my impressions with others. But if I didn't belong, I'd regard $5 to read a newly released book as a perfectly reasonable expense. That's less than a bowl of soup @ Panera costs for 10-15 hours of pleasure, not to add the social joys of sharing responses with readers all over the world. That works out @ 50¢ an hour, which was less than it costs you to park your car to pick up a book at the public library. We should mention too that authors & editors & publishers deserve to be paid for their work.

Another reason I'd not want to restrict my choices to the ICPL (tho' I'm grateful for their services) is that if a book has been out for a while I have probably already read it or decided it's not for me. So please, let's put literary & artistic quality first - a real five star is surely worth skipping a fast-food lunch for.

Jaksen For some that five bucks is a doctor's visit. There are those who use the library for their internet connection. It's easy for those who can afford new books to use comparisons about how cheap certain things are, but when you are honestly short of cash and have to wait in a long queue to get a book ...

All I was suggesting is that older, classics be considered, too, and some consideration given to those for whom a new book every month IS a considerable expense.

(Also, not everyone has a Kindle or smartphone. Sometimes it is assumed because everyone seems to own these devices, that everybody does. Not so.)

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

My feeling on this is that everyone should participate and I'm happy to consider books for a group vote as long as they are put in the folder for the bookshelf. If we have enough people voting who would like to read a book from the library and a new book, then we can have two separate group readings. In the end, all I want is for everyone to enjoy themselves.
Also, if you find a took from the library and it's an upcoming author who doesn't have a lot of reviews on Kindle, then that can go in the Underrated authors folder and I'll use that for a vote as well.

I was going to say the same 2 books.

Feel free to review the books in the showcase folder and see if you're interested in having them as part of December vote.

message 33: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) Is the Showcase folder the 37 books under Bookshelf?

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

The Showcase would be the sections with the authors listed under them. Sorry for any confusion on this.
