Carol (carolcalex) | 14 comments Wanderlust - Danielle Steele (recommended - 15 pts)

Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
Me, Myself, and Them: A firsthand Account of One Young Person's Experiences with Schizophrenia - Kurt Snyder (author's names the same 25 pts)

Playing For Pizza - John Grisham (food - 10 pts)

Dark Summer - Iris Johansen (summer in name - 5 pts)

In a Sunburn Country - Bill Bryson (recomm. 15 pts)

O Pioneers! - Willa Cather (recomm. 15 pts)

The Highest Tide - Jim Lynch (child narrates - 5 pts)

Tortilla Flat, The Moon is Down, Cannery Row -
John Steinbeck (3 short stories = 328 pgs - 25 pts)

Inconvenient Truth - 15 pts (8/27)

The Tiger Warrior - David Gibbons (483 pgs)
The Country Ahead of us, the Country Behind - David Guterson, short stories 164 pgs (same name = 25 pts)

I would never have picked up Tiger Warrior and then certainly never finished it if it hadn't been for the summer reading challenge. Too heavy on the ancient history/archeology & not enough on human interest!Read it over a long weekend away 8/28-8/31 and then re-read Guterson's short stories last night when we came home, finishing it at 11:00 pm under the wire for our challenge deadline!

Total summer points: 155 pts -- How'd I do?

Kim, thank you for setting this up. It was a fun way to get me to read more!

Service of the Sword, Sci-fi short fiction compilation 10 points

The Year's Best SF 14, short fiction compilation 10 points

The Hunt for Red October, Tom Clancy. It's got red in th title and october in the title, one of my favorite movies is based on it, and I haven't read it since I was in the 4th grade, but apparently I only get to count one of those. 5 points.

Shadow of Saganami by David Weber
The Great Encounter of China and the West, 1500-1800, by David. E. Mungello
Two “Davids” for 25 points

Crown of Slaves by Eric Flint and David Weber, which I started while IN France, 15 points.

$20 Per Gallon: How the Inevitable Rise in the Price of Gasoline Will Change Our Lives for the Better
by Christopher Steiner, about the environment, for 15 points.

Eastern Standard Tribe by Cory Doctorow, which apparently doesn't score any points.

Total 80 points. The point structure felt geared against readers of non-fiction, which seems to have driven some of my reading choices this summer.
