I agree with both of you! I'm listening to "The Golden Compass" at the moment, and have been struck similarities between the heroine, Lyra, and Ruby. Both are strong, smart, tough young women who get themselves into deep trouble but are also blessed by finding good friends. Friendship and teamwork found in unexpected places must be an important theme for Pullman.
