Sara | 30 comments Just finished the book and it was an enjoyable read. Amazing how Sally kept landing on her feet and finding friends when she needed them. I wish everyone experienced kindness when trouble visits.

I agree with both of you! I'm listening to "The Golden Compass" at the moment, and have been struck similarities between the heroine, Lyra, and Ruby. Both are strong, smart, tough young women who get themselves into deep trouble but are also blessed by finding good friends. Friendship and teamwork found in unexpected places must be an important theme for Pullman.

And what a great message for young adults. The world is a horrible place, but there are good people out there.

So glad you enjoyed the read, Sara! Will you go on to the next in the series?
