Derrick wrote: "Hey guys will the group be reading The Stand for July? I'm just asking because The Stand is on the list twice; once for the original version and once for the rereleased extended un-cut version."
Thanks for pointing this out!! I'll look now (the night before July of course).
So we will not read The Stand again, sorry about that. I didn't notice that before when I posted the list. Good thing someone noticed.

Alright thanks for checking. I've not read The Stand so I was hoping we would be reading it. No worries I'll get it read at some point.

Ya know, I was thinking the same thing....

Thanks, a great resource.

I need my fix!!!!

I know, my Christmas has been in a draught with not getting a book as a gift!

After Anne Rice passed I'm over here scared!
After Anne Rice passed I'm over here scared!

I just received my book! I can't wait to start it.:)

I honestly haven't seen much talk about it anywhere.
Kandice, I've been thinking about your question.
I think that basically it is the collaboration. That is, King co-wrote the first book, which the group discussed on release.
Then King did not write the second book so it sorta fell off the list, so to speak.
But now he's back on book 3 and it's back to being a King written series, though since we didn't read/discuss book 2 we have that gap.
I was thinking we need to set up a buddy read. I need to go back and read book 1 again, before continuing with the 2nd and 3rd.

If you don't want to, you really don't have to. The last is really a stand alone novel. I think anyone could pick up just that one and have no trouble following the story.
I liked it quite a bit more than Richard Chizmar's Gwendy's Magic Feather, which was NO King, for certain!
It's cool. I've recently gotten new hardcovers of all three so wanting to read them back to back to back.
Kandice wrote: "Why aren't we talking about Gwendy's Final Task? It feels odd."
AYE! I feel so ashamed not putting this up for reading! I'm going to go ahead and add it to this month's reading. Thanks for pointing this out to us

Don't feel badly! Your reasoning makes sense, but after reading it and realizing that you don't need to read Feather to understand, I think it belongs here.

Plenty of reading material, and at least half of the latter half is already here!

No, it's still a book written by King. It becomes a collector's item and a rarity, but still a book.
We don't cancel books in this group ;)

If you're reading through them, and you go chronologically, you'll definitely pick up on ties between novels that may not be particularly important, but connect his universe in many small ways. But skipping around is perfectly ok, so long as its not books in a series like his Dark Tower books or The Talisman and Black House.
As for his short stories, its ok to skip them as they're largely unrelated, however some of his short stories contain as much emotion as some of his massive 1000 page novels, so I definitely recommend checking out some of the collections if you get a chance or feel like tackling something with smaller bites to it. His early short story collections are particularly good and give you a nice varied taste to the type of writing Kings novels contain.
All in all I think theres a lot of places to start with King, but Carrie is where I often recommend people to do so, as its a smaller novel and still a very good one.
