Adam (sonofsteel) | 4 comments Hi, so I read these a while ago so the details are a little fuzzy.
There was a trilogy (I Think) that had a group of people in a space station orbiting a planet that was considered primitive and they were studying the inhabitance. One group in particular they were studying were kinda nuns who's philosophy was that they were waiting for 'The Chosen being' to appear. One of the scientist used some tech to send messages to these people pretending to be 'The One' so as to get more info off them. He got so interested in them that he broke protocol and went down to the planet to live with them. Meanwhile elsewhere in this world things were starting to go bad and a new religion had started to arise on that used a snake motive and required that men whip there wifes once a week (SPOILER: It turns out the snake was a being of power and grew more powerful from the suffering of his worshipers).
So the guy from space and the nuns ended up trying to stop the spread of evil.

SPOILERS:
It turns out that the space man only thought he was pretending to be "The Chosen One' because surprise, He really was! It also turned out that what was going on on this planet was affecting the rest of the universe, the more the chaos snake entity grew the more chaos spread in the entire universe! What was happening in small (Relatively) scale on this planet was a representation of the universal struggle of chaos vs order.

Michele | 2488 comments Adam, if you edit the subject line to be more descriptive, you might get more views. For example, "Sci Fi, observing planet from space, prophecy, snake entity"

Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) | 297 comments Long shot, but Enchantress from the Stars by Sylvia Engdahl has a similar premise. A superior race was observing a primitive society on a planet, decided to intervene to prevent the lesser species from being invaded by another group, which I think was represented by a dragon....

Heather | 183 comments The Helliconia Series by Brian Aldiss is similar to this, but maybe not quite what you're looking for.
