Kristie | 19148 comments Hi all! I'm so sorry to report this, but the hosting site that I use for badges is closing. I just found out today that the badges will no longer be viewable. Oddly enough, the site states that as of yesterday they are no longer viewable, but I can still see them today. If you want to save your toppler badges, you may want to take a screen shot or something. I honestly have no idea when or if they will actually disappear, but I'm guessing they will soon. I apologize for this. I had no idea this could happen when I was making badges. I thought even if the site closed, the badges that were there would stay.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments This might apply to more than just Kristie's toppler badges. I think the other current mods are not using that hosting site, but perhaps they have in the past, or previous mods may have.

It's a shame :(

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments 'm not positive, but I think that once your graphic is on the Goodreads server, it will stay there. In other words Goodreads actually "hosts" it, after the fact.

I know this is so with Photobucket images. Once I use Photobucket as the vehicle to capture an image, and then bring over to YLTO!, I go back to Photobucket and delete it from my library there. It no longer exists in Photobucket, but stays permanently on my Goodreads page.

I accidentally noticed this when Photobucket announced eliminating non-paying members, charging x number of dollars for storage. I moved many of my images off, and then found that ones used long ago are still appearing in Goodreads. ( Like all of those Toppler images that I used to post.)

So if you are noticing that your favorite badge site images are still appearing on Goodreads, even though they say that they are shut down, you may be experiencing what I noticed some timer ago.

If you have images out there that have not been downloaded to Goodreads, those are the ones you want to be sure to host somewhere else.

As I have said, I've never verified the truth of this.

I just believe in the magic of it!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's good news Almeta. It would make sense that it would be the same with images from other hosting sites, not just photobucket.

Actually, if you click on a toppler badge (which should normally bring you to that badge but on tinypyc) it brings you to the tinypic site saying they're shutting down. I guess that could mean that the pics are indeed hosted on GR servers.

Kristie | 19148 comments That makes sense, Almeta. I panicked when I went to their site and saw this notice:

"August 29, 2019 - hosted images will no longer be viewable on 3rd party websites. Because we are an anonymous hosting site and therefore cannot provide notice by e-mail to our users, we have opted to replace all hosted images with a temporary message directing them to this notice."

I figured we were a third party site and started to worry. It does make sense that GR hosts the pics now. Phew!

I used to use photobucket, but then they started to have too many issues with popups, etc that the site became almost unusable and now you need to have an account with them. Tinypic recommended using photobucket when they closed because they are related somehow, sister companies I think.

It is my belief that the link will no longer work, but your image will remain where you have placed it.

They still are virtually unusable with all the pop-ups. I still use them but I sneak in at non-peak times, upload my image, download it to Goodreads, then immediately delete it at Photobucket!. In and out lickety-split!

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments Here's another tip:

Be sure your picture has arrived successfully before you do this. (maybe refresh your page first.)

The whole string that redirects to your source can be eliminated. This will set loose valuable character space in your message window.

So what you usually see is:
< (and) a href="http: "yada yada yada........>

AND THEN JUST AFTER THAT:
< (and) img src="https " same yada yada yada...../>

Erase the "< (and) a href" string. keep the "< (and) img src" string.

Ta Da! Image is still there.

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments Hopefully, our badges won't disappear. Kristie, do you keep the originals that you create on your computer? If the images disappear, maybe we can recreate them. What a pain though.

message 10: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19148 comments I think I do have them all, Janice, but it would be a lot to go back through all the topplers to see who earned badges, as well as who was on which team and which team won the toppler. I might skip the "winner" badges and give everyone participant badges if I had to redo them all. Hopefully, I won't need to do that.

Janice (jamasc) | 59897 comments Let's not worry about it now. We can figure out the logistics if we need to.
