I'm not familiar at all with Node.js so I can't provide much help there.

However, can you inspect the actual Authentication header in the request and see if it's similar to that of the requests that do work?

Thanks Ettore, I realized that I had been using the oauth request token instead of the access token. What was strange to me is that I was able to perform other requests such as adding books to shelves and seeing notifications by using the request token.
