So what does it tell you about him?

Sallinger said he wanted people to get to know him through his writing (rather than interviews and so on)
If this is the case, what does Catcher In the Rye tell you about the author and A Perfect Day for Bannafish?
What emotions do you feel about him?

I always felt empathy for Holden. It tells us that he's not perfect and has had a troubling past. I did not know the specifics about Salinger until I watched the Crash Course videos on Catcher in the Rye. I would recommend those because they give a lot of insight.

Demetrius Sherman You have empathy for Holden, do you have empathy for J.D. Sallinger as well?

From everything I have ever read about him, he was a recluse that liked small town New England and the town didn't bother him when he showed up at the local fire house eatery.

His quote may be nothing more than let the reader decide about me. Salinger did not seem to want celebrity and he certainly did not give many interviews. I cannot ever recall reading his take on his work and that leaves me with the impression he didn't want to color readers perceptions.
