Hi Kandice. I watched s1 of Game of Thrones then read Book 1 and loved both. Then read Book 2 followed by watching s2. Then read Books 3 & 4. But now I'm taking a break too!I really do love the books - so complex! Will definitely finish the series. I feel I would get a lot out of them if I re read, But i read quite slowly so I'm not sure if I'm going to devote that much time to Mr Martin. But maybe I will!
Also I find it difficult to avoid spoilers - both from the telly and the book directions! But I've done pretty well so far!

Hmm I wonder why your pics show up so small... I click to enlarge and it's still the tiniest square! The one I uploaded for the group home looks bigger though so it's possible to get them that size :S
I took the photos with my phone and them sent them to myself, so maybe that's why. It's the easiest way I know to upload a picture without asking any of my offspring for help! :D They are my IT department.King sang and played guitar all night. Is he a great singer? No, but he is an enthusiastic singer, and obviously cares about what he's doing. I've said this in other conversations, but I find his voice so endearing. I could hear him say a word or two in a crowd and recognize hi, I'm sure. It's nasally, but also calm and...just nice. I'm sure that's my fan bone speaking.

I haven't watched the series yet, but I want to.
I think rereading the books would be almost as enjoyable as reading them for the first time, there's so much in them. For myself I think I'll wait a few years. There are too many good stories out there to spend all my time on Martin, like you said. Game of Thrones is definitely up there with LOTR for me though.

Derek, I agree that a re-read of SoIaF can be as satisfying as the first time. They are so incredibly dense! The closest I have ever read as far as density of plot is Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series and that in unique in that it is historical fiction. She did NOT make up the plots, simply the details! I cannot recommend a series more than that one.

Does it refer to the Holy Roman Empire, or more with the "original Rome", up there with ancient Greece in terms of technology. I'm not too good with dates for all this...
It begins with Gaius Marius and his reformation of the Roman army. It ends with Antony and Cleopatra. The second and third books focus mainly on Lucius Cornelius Sulla (what a wack job!) and the remainder focus on Gaius Julius Caesar and then the final installment, Marc Antony and Caesar's Julian his heir.

I haven't read a lot of historical fiction, but oddly enough I love the subject. History can be stranger than fiction.
I started the series when I was pregnant with my oldest son (he's 21 now) and read and re-read them over the course of my childbearing years as I was pregnant and then out loud to my children as I nursed. Weird, but they are all fascinated with that period of history now. Go figure...
I have read all the "Song of Ice and Fire" books. I loved them.A lot of people compare them and put them on the same level as "Lord of the Ring", but I am not at all of this opinion. For me, they are really different, even thought they are both fantasy.
LotR is about the world and worlbuilding. The story and characters are, in a way, very "basic". OK, basic is not the term, but it's very straighforward. But the world is very rich, and the richest part in the story. The story is only an excuse for talking about the world.
SoIaF is the oposite. The world is very classic, we've seen lots and lots of the same type in the fantasy department, but the books are all about the characters, their stories and relationship. The world is only an excuse for the characters and their story.
So for me, I don't like the comparison between LotR and SoIaF. The focus of the books is completely different. They are both epic fantasy saga, but really different and incomparable for me.

Yeah, another variation is SoIaF is more for the politics than the fantasy, though it has fantasy,and LotR is closer to Fantasy, though it has politics.
Maybe this is a comment for a different thread but, while i thoroughly enjoy GoT the telly series, i do find it lacks not only some of the complexity if the Soiaf books (which is inevitable, in my opinion) but also some of the subtlety (which is less so).

GoT is Game of Thrones, the name of the first book and what many people call the whole series.
SoIaF is Song of Ice and Fire which is the author's title for the entire series. Because of the HBO show many people don't realize the mistake.
I read them far enough back that I don't feel comfortable opening the htread (my comments will be only memories), but won't discuss it here anymore. ;)

Ahoy hoy All. I know what you mean Ana when it comes to acronyms I find myself staring at the same sentences trying to work them out, usually I can figure them out, though I have been known on the odd senior moment to call on my daughter to have her explain...either that or google helps.

Rain is my favorie weather. The rest of my family complains about it, but I think it's beautiful.
I love the rain as well, and so do my children, but their school doesn't even have a cafeteria. The kids eat lunch outside and get their food through walk-up windows so that's always miserable for them.

I am not a big shelver of books. I set a goal for 6 books in December (in this group) and I've met that, but I don't know how to make them show up!

Got my shelves figured out and now they reflect my challenge as "finished". Yay!Today has been an all around productive day. I made 6 pounds of fudge, 12 dozen cookies, 2 batches of toffee, purchased everything I need for the rest of my baking/candy making, volunteered at the snack bar at my daughter's soccer game and am getting ready to go to a Chanukah party.
I'm beat! No wonder the only "reading" I will be able to record today is audio.
