Sorobai | 365 comments Hi, all. Very funny, but not so uncommon as one might think.
Same with the names of the books. There are too many books with the same titles.
Something funny I found out recently is the use of chinese imagery for the cover of some japanese author books. Sometimes the contrary also occurs but it's not so common.
The guilt is with the editors. Some editors know nothing about the books themselves or their authors, they specialise in publishing and marketing alone...

Kandice Along the same lines was my disappointment when the cast, almost without exception, for Memoirs of a Geisha was CHINESE!

I see you listed "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals. Great tune by a great band, and if you'd like to hear a different take on it I suggest listening to the version by a band called Frijid Pink. very psychedelic, and even somewhat creepy but a cool groove nonetheless.

Kandice My daughter leaves Monday morning, 6:30 a.m. for a three weeks tour of the four colleges she is most interested in. She has never been away from home that long and she will be taking a variety of transportation including planes, trains, college admissions giving her rides and possibly a subway or two.

It's the most nerve wracking thing I've ever been through.

I'm sure she will be fine, Kandice! It will be a great experience for her. But yeah, I get that you're worried. Hope she calls often!

message 907: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I'm sure she will text a lot more than she calls. This is going to be her taste of "away." She's only interested in colleges on the East Coast, but we live in California, so she will be far no matter where she goes.

Melaslithos | 1645 comments This week-end, a photographer friend came home to shoot me and my books. That's where my new profile picture comes from!

You should now that I hate being taken pictures of, and that he insisted a while before I accepted, but I quite like the result (and we did a mess in the hallway, with a lot of powder everywhere ;-p ).

The picture is a bit dark to show up properly in the small icone, but it's better on my profile page ^^

Sorobai | 365 comments Hello everybody, how you doing!?
Did you get your half-year goodreads report already!?
I just got mine and I really need a boost. I read 5.450 pages but I'm falling short on my goal... I need to get some free time urgently! eh eh Good luck everybody!

message 912: by Melaslithos (last edited Jul 13, 2016 01:57AM) (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments @Sorobai Thanks!

And yes, I received my half-year report, and I'm done (although I always put my target especially low, more as a reminder "don't forget to read" and not to pressure me to it). I don't need anymore pressure right not, and more falling behind my goals.

I must admit that even though my challenge looks good, I read much less this year than the same time last year, and haven't had time for much testing lately.

message 913: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Hi Melas cheers!
You doing good, much better than me! Take care and go easy.

message 914: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
I did yes, I am currently 5 books ahead because I set a low challenge as I knew I would be reading much less this year. Quite frankly, I read less and less. It is such a shame but I just don't have the time nor brainpower anymore v.v

message 915: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I just wanted to write a quick word here to say that I hate the new home page of goodreads. All the things I was using it for, especially the groups (which was my default setting) have been taken away.

I really don't like that now, the goups are one clicks away and not immediately available.

message 916: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments I just watched the new page now! It looks rather strange and empty. On the other side I never took much interested in it anyway. Most important features for me are the right collumn. Books I'm currently reading, reading sugestions and overall Goodreads Challenge setup.

message 917: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Well, I liked having my groups + all that you mentionned on the same page. Now, the info from the "right column" is still on the home page, but the group discussions are in their own page. So two different places when I could have them together in the past.

I was really bummed about this too, but by hovering over m,y profile photo in the upper right, the drop down menu appears and I can click "my discussions" but it took some fiddling to figure out.

You can also go in the drop down menu below "Community" in the top bar.

message 921: by Kandice (new)

Kandice No matter how many ways there are to skin a cat I just don't like the new design. Groups are my favorite thing about GR and I don't like having to click, click, click.

I totally agree with that.

message 923: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Holly cow! Is it possible that a book with the same isbn and same edition can have a different cover!? I was really surprised to find this out! Anyway, I just bought The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe
I always though isbn means the exact same thing whenever you find it. Anyway, the amazon page for this book have the right cover, but not here at GD. Can it be that the author of the book page mistaked it's cover? Or is it an old edition? I really don't know, but I seem not to find the right cover on GR for now yet.

message 925: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I also thought ISBN was exact, I'm just usually too lazy to leave the desk and find the actual book so I just search the title. If it's not actually exact I will never feel guilty about that particular laziness again!

message 926: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments I mean I like to have the exact cover of my book only on my owned-books folder since it's easier to find it later that way in my shelves. As for the want-to read folder I have no preference on the cover and usually go for the most common cover among friends.

It's actually quite common when publishing companies are doing reprints of a book. The new version has a different cover than the old one, everything else being the same.
In GR here, they call those alternate cover edition (ACE). Check this one for example:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

If you don't find your ACE here:
https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

Just give me the info and exact cover of your book and I will create it for you.

message 928: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Actually, since you mentioned that the cover you have is the same as on Amazon, I directly went and create the ACE for you (couldn't find this exact cover on GR indeed).

Here it is:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Please tell me if that's correct.

message 929: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Hi Melas, that's right that! Thanks a lot. I found out there's so many different versions for this book! But now I can have my own copy on my owned books folder.

I am never a fan of changes so yeah I completely agree. The older page had a neater look in my opinion and everything was easy to find. Why try to fix what is not broken? :(

Hello!

I am thinking of watching The Girl on the Train today. I have not read the book so I have been hesitant but given movie adaptations have been consistently a let down for me I figured I would watch this now and maybe read the book in a few months or years when I have forgotten the movie xD

Have you watched the movie and/or read the book?

message 932: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I read the book and loved it until the wrap up. I am hoping the movie has a different ending than the book.

message 933: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Well I don't know about that but I did enjoy the movie. I thought the pace was a bit slow for the most part but overall I enjoyed it very much and when the pieces start fitting in it was quite exciting.

message 934: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments I read the book, didn't watch the movie. I liked the book, it was a nice surprise since I don't usually like this kind of books. But this one had the capacity to hold me. As for the movie I'm looking for it in the near future. But I would read the book first than the movie anyway.

Sorobai | 365 comments Since the last changes in GR website most of my owned books lost their covers... It's really annoying since I don't have librarian privileges to alter this... I don't understand how some members with less books and use of the site are considered librarians and I'm not... Anyway, I just wish GR let me change this and let me put the right cover on the books. I'm doing them a favor after all!

You can apply to be a librarian here:
https://www.goodreads.com/about/apply...

As a warning though, I think GR doesn't really accept application of people that only want to fix their own shelves, but will accept much more easily people who want to improve the global GR library.

If you don't want to apply, don't feel like it, or have not been accepted yet, Anna and I (at least), are both librarians here, so please put a word with what changes you need and we will take care of it.

Or you can just ask in the librarian group, here for example for book covers:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

message 937: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Hi Melas, thank you a lot for your fast reply.
With due respect I think that improving our own shelves is contributing to the improvement of the global GR library. I undestand what you're saying though.
In fact I just don't have the time or patience to answer infinite questions on quizzes about books... I answer a few before though.
Anyway if you will be so kind to help out I will not try to apply for librarian.
Please take a look at my owned books shelf. There are a lot of books without cover as you may see. I can provide those covers since I own those books. Please let me know. It's just so easy as adding a cover for the data already present. Thanks

I got those I could find the cover online. Please check if they are the right ones.
For the others, I will need you to upload the covers online and then send me a link to those. Please make sure that you got the right edition/ISBN on GR.

message 941: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I have far too many books (paper or virtual) laying unread on my sheves. For long, I tried forbidding myself buying more books in an attempt to lower the quantity of TBR books, but clearly, that is not working (I'm too weak in the eye of temptation, and I have too many exceptions to this rule).

So I am starting something new in order to try to rationalize my shelves (I DO NOT need more books than I can read, that's ridiculous. I've counted, with my current reading speed, I would need more than 5 years to read only the paper books, it's ridiculous - I think I'd need a lifetime for all ebooks I've accumulated).

I started as of today a spreadsheet on which I am going to note all the books coming in (bought by myself, won, gifts, R4R, etc.) and all the books read. At the end of the year, I will compare the two lists. The minimum target is to keep the number of books read above the number of books coming in. The ideal target would for the numbers of books read to be at least two times as much as the number of books coming in.

If someone offers me a book (with my birthday and Christmas coming, it's a very high probability)? Then I will have to cut on the numbers of books coming from other sources (bought myself, netgalley, etc.). Or read more if I want to treat myself ^^.

I'm going to do a first appraisal in a month, then at the end of the year, and see where it goes from there.

I hope it's going to help me curb my book hogging tendencies. Wish me luck!

message 942: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments Hi Melas. ah ah ah Just read your post. You can't belive how well I understand you. Maybe you got the same problem as most of us here. Like they say: too many books, too little time. I confess I tried to rationalize this over and over many times. Tried different methods just like you to increase reading rate and decrease aquisition rate. Ratherless, in the end, I always find out that this relation rate is more and more upside down. Not trying to discourage you though. Wish you the best luck!

message 943: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
That sounds like an excellent strategy, Melas! Good luck keeping up with it eheh

message 944: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Sounds like a great strategy!

I have to admit to being in your boat a few years ago, but after a book buying ban of three years, I kind of caught up. At least I no longer won more book that I haven't yet read, than could be read in a year.

I always accept gifts of books, so like you, add them to my TBR pile happily!

message 945: by Karen M (new)

Karen M I made my own logic. I have set on the number 200. Right now I have 210 unread books on the shelves. I can't buy any more books until I get below 200. It's killing me. I don't consider books I get for R&R as purchases since I don't pay for them but I still include them in my book count of unread books. I don't think I've been below 200 in the last six months. :(

message 946: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I've discovered a new word recently, "abibliphobia", the fear of running out of things to read. Looks like we all suffer from it here!

message 947: by Sorobai (new)

Sorobai | 365 comments I belive I will never suffer from abibliophobia. I have more books to read than I can count....

message 949: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Where did you see that?! How lovely would that be? Maybe not so much, because sometimes I feel all that allows me to get anything done in life is reading a book I can't get into!

Oh just browsing facebook :)
When I find something I like, usually book related, I post it to my blog's page.
Yes, I do miss having the time to truly immerse myself in a book. For a long time I have only been able to read while on the bus, where it is usually very noisy, and a bit before sleeping but I am usually so tired when I hit the hey I only manage to get a few lines in. From now on I plan to take full advantage of weekends. That's the good thing about rainy/cold weather - makes you want to cosy indoors with a good book.
