Looking for a book with themes similar to Final Fantasy 13.

I'm looking for novels that have similar themes to the game series Final Fantasy 13 such as:
Futuristic setting but characters have swords
Characters with supernatural strength
Characters who are reluctant heroes
Fight against impossible odds
Story that involves god-like beings giving characters powers
Cool looking fight scenes.
Any of these themes, or combinations of them, would be preferred. I am also looking for anything that has elements of Final Fantasy 7. The first theme is the one I would prefer to hear about.

I think Edgar Rice Burroughs Martian series would fit most of these criteria - and they are free to download at Project Gutenberg - http://www.gutenberg.org/ as they are out of copyright

I would check out Garth Nix's Abhorsen series. Sabriel is the first novel.
