Sounds like Chase needs to wash his hands of the weak willed female and go get himself a good woman. I'm with you; I hate storylines where the heroine runs after the hero like an idiot after jumping into bed with him. Ugh. It's one of my top most hated plots. I don't care how talented the author is, how beautifully written the book, that's a 2 star read for me. But I get it; you've reached this far you just need to get it done. It's torture! 😞😞😞

message 4003: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments That’s my other frustration. Twice now Chase has vented and walked away but yet picks up like nothing ever happened. Venessa makes this statement I had no idea he thought of me in that way. That statement doesn’t even make sense. She’s so quick to give Julian credit and put him on a pedastool when the guy has truly showed no true affection. I have to charge my kindle but I left off where Julian is back in the picture. I’m sad that I can’t as the reader feel the love connection between the true couple. If she ends up with Julian it will tick me off at this point and if she ends with Chase (which I want at this point) I’m mad that no time building a true connection with her. We never hear any POV from anyone besides Vanessa and this girl is sad. She doesn’t know herself at all bc she is wrapped up into technology and races around for her job.

message 4004: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I’m furthering my rant. She knows nothing of who Julian truly is she is so consumed by the Darcy persona. It’s always bothered me with all the quotes and 19 century talk. It was one thing in public and her aunt but when he started wanting to kiss her and stuff it just never made sense that he wouldn’t want her to know who he was. He never tried to show who he was but used the gentleman angle and pretending to be all is pleasing and polite.

She sounds like a real idiot. This is a contemporary novel? You've reached that far in the book and still don't know who the true could is? Oh my I feel your pain!

I finally finished my Highland romance. It was really good. I did get annoyed with the h at one point even though I could understand why she did what she did. But I still wanted to b**th slap her. lol I'm about to start another highland book. Another reread. :)

Well??? Don't keep me hanging. Who did the idiot end up with? Chase? Ugh Poor Chase. 😕😕😕😕

The book I'm reading now is a Highland romance. It's called Beneath A Highland Moon. It's another re-read for me. I love the hero in that book. So awesome! He and the heroine have loved each other for years, but when he asked her father for her hand in marriage he told him no because he had already betrothed her to another man just two weeks earlier...without telling the h of course. It was sad how heartbroken they both were. Now four years later, they reunite when her clan is invaded by a distant cousin who usurps her four year old brother as the new laird (their father had recently passed away.) The heroine flees the keep with her brother and goes to the hero for help. She never got married because the jerk she'd been betrothed to had happily died before they could tie the knot.

No, I finished the Sands book days ago. The one I just finished was by Cathy MacRae; The Highlander's Accidental Bride. That was another re-read for me. I loved it almost as much the second time; although the heroine did kind of get on my nerves at one point this time. Maybe it was just my mood; who knows?

Anyway, the Scottish king orders the hero and the daughter of the laird of a rival clan to marry for peace. The other laird and his daughter are being difficult. The king threatens the hero with loss of his lands and title (he's an earl) if he doesn't get the marriage done, so the hero kidnaps the daughter. During the kidnapping she is knocked over the head and later wakes with no memory. The hero forces her to marry him anyway, and when she gets her memory back he discovers she is the wrong woman! lol She wants a divorce, but he decides he wants to keep her. It's actually kind of funny.

What I love about it is the way she doesn't just fall into his arms. He has to work to get her. It's hilarious because his brother keeps teasing him about the fact that his usual sexual prowess with the ladies isn't working with his wife. Haha

BTW which Jennifer Ashley book are you talking about?

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. Wow you’ve been busy. So it turned out Julian was the jerk as I thought likes wickham. He was actually engaged for a year. She was back and forth right up until he blurted out his intro of his fiancée in the middle of a masquerade ball. Chase sword fought for her in her honor with Julian. Vanessa sword fought and tried reasoning with his fiancée only to get injured and limped to her way home grabbed her things and fled England. She never called, texted Chase the entire time. She was as crappy to chase imo as Julian was bc for weeks she never texted him or called except basics. Than all the sudden we were lead to believe she realized she had loved him all along. I wrote a review I gave her 2 stars. What a train wreck. I got a little sleep. Gonna see what I want to read next. I felt old in a way bc this author was just so nonchalant about her characters sleeping around. I know modern times ppl think that’s fine and I really don’t mean to sound like a prude but this girl openly admitted at the end that when chase kissed her that no man has ever kissed her as he had. Then thought and I’ve kissed a lot of men. Am I alone in thinking that’s gross. There was nothing in that book by then that made that couple special. There was no pull or loyalty. She kept running after Julian who never even told her his middle name! Ok now that that is out of my system I am gonna have a snack and look for a book. I’ll let you know what I choose as soon as I figure that out

Nope you're not alone. If you're a prude, then I'm one with you. And, as you know, one of my biggest pet peeves (it might actually be my biggest) is a heroine that I perceive to be a tramp. This is true even in my contemporary books. That one you just just finished does sound like a train wreck. Oh my what a horrible story and poor Chase!

Funny though, I actually read a historical romance where the heroine was a prostitute; at the beginning of the story she had just "retired" from the profession. I loved that book; it was a novella. The author did such an awesome job making me connect with the heroine's character. But I'd much rather an outright prostitute for a heroine than one who is just lacking in any type of self respect.

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I think it’s in the delivery. If a woman of that time got herself with the wrong guy he had control over her. It’s hard to say what I would do in a situation like that. We take a lot for granted now and yet modern girls are losing the small luxeries we grew up. A guy giving up his chair or opening a door. My husband did and still does both for me. I chose a Catherine Anderson book. Forever after. I needed a book I knew the author understood romance.

So true, EB. It all depends on the delivery. I just hate gratuitous sex where the heroine throws herself at the hero who is trying to be noble and keep his hands off her after he tells her they have no future, or when he obviously doesn't trust her or has some other negative feeling towards her. I don't know why authors persistently portray women as these creatures with no control over our sexual urges. I've read stories where the hero treats the heroine like crap one minute and the next he crooks his finger at her and she goes running like a little puppy dog. It's so disgusting! I actually read one book where the H and h were married; the H was horrible to the h. He totally ignored her during the day; at one point he was staying away from morning until night. There was one scene where they start to have sex then he left the h in the middle of the act and basically told her if she wanted him to finish she'd have to come to him for it. And the b***ch did! I almost had a coronary!!! I think that's the worst h I've ever encountered. Absolutely no pride whatsoever. I don't see anything romantic about that. Ugh. Sorry about the language, but she literally behaved like a female dog in heat. lol

I went and looked it up. I remember it. It was high drama. lol You absolutely loved it as well as at least one other book you read by that author. I thought the story was good, but it was too dramatic; same thing with a second book I read by the same author. A woman with a broken arm hanging on to a rope and being pulled up, while holding a child with her good arm was a bit too much for me to swallow. 😂😂😂😂 I found my review for it; apparently it did get me out of a reading slump. 😀😀😀

Good morning, ladies! Here are a few freebies for today.

https://smile.amazon.com/Forbidden-Du...

https://smile.amazon.com/Devoted-Brid...
This is a mail order bride romance. It's listed at over six hundred pages!!

https://smile.amazon.com/Sheriffs-Dar...

https://smile.amazon.com/Unexpected-F...

https://smile.amazon.com/Dancing-into...
This is another book listed at over 500 pages. I notice that a lot of newer books now have these really high page count. That's great if the story can keep you thoroughly engaged, but otherwise it might turn a really nice story into a drag.

https://smile.amazon.com/Gracious-Lov...

https://smile.amazon.com/Secret-Confe...
Another five hundred page book. This one sounds intriguing. The H is a duke; the h a dressmaker. The H is engaged to an "obnoxious" woman. Apparently, the h has a true identity of which she is unaware and her and the H have a connecting past. When the h is accused of jewelry theft the H comes to her rescue. Sounds like it has quite a bit of intrigue; just like I like my romance stories. lol

https://smile.amazon.com/Leaving-Texa...
This is a wagon train romance.

https://smile.amazon.com/Montana-West...
This is a four book mail order bride box set.

https://smile.amazon.com/Dangerous-Na...
This is a regency novella; about 90 pages.

https://smile.amazon.com/Twelve-Days-...
EB and Sheila, this one is for you! A P&P variation.

https://smile.amazon.com/Mr-Darcys-Pa...
And here's another. However this one is super short! It's listed at 24 pages.

https://smile.amazon.com/Pride-Prejud...
This one is a gender switched retelling of P&P. I hesitated to list it, though, because the overall rating is only 2 stars from six reviews. 😟😟😟

OK. That's it for today, ladies! Have a great day!!

We're having stormy weather here in South Florida. It poured extremely hard over night into this morning. The rain stopped a couple of hours ago, but it's been overcast all day. And now there's a lot of thunder and lightning outside; we're also under flood warnings.

EB, you are so right about the reading! I didn't start reading again until August of this year. Then last month I decided WTH I'd set a goal. I started with thirty books then upped it to forty then fifty and now I've upped it again to sixty. At the rate I'm going I'll have read a hundred books by the end of the year. Granted some of the books are short novellas, so I'm not sure how much they count.

The books I'm reading are Highland Deception by Meggan Connors. It's a book I've had for a few years, but only just now decided to read. The hero is a twin. His brother is laird of their clan. The brother committed some crime for which the H got blamed which lead to him being hunted by the law. The punishment is hanging. It's been ten years since he's been on the run. Now his brother is dying and sends for him; he wanted the hero to take his place and pretend to him. It's the brother's way of trying to make up for the wrong he's done the hero. The hero takes over his brother's identity including the title AND the heroine who is the brother's unwanted wife. So far it's pretty interesting.

The other book I'm reading is A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart by Christi Caldwell. So far it looks like it's going to be a fun read. The h was jilted by the H's best friend ten years earlier. The h and H have known each other since childhood; the H's mother is the h's godmother—the two families are close. The H is heir to a dukedom but he is rather reticent, shy, and bookish. He's loved the h forever, but was always too shy and awkward around her; then lost her (or almost lost her) to his best friend. Seems like it's going to be a sweet second chance at love story; at least a second chance for the hero.

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Sounds good. I thing I set the goal for 50 this year. If you’ve never read it Gaelan Foley did a Knight family series. I loved it. There were 2 books with twin brothers. Damien and Lucian nicknamed Dameon and Lucifer because of childhood pranks. When they grew up one became a secret spy who held tight to the nickname and the brother went military. They both had their own book Lord of Fire and Lord of Ice. Loved them both. Lucien suffered from PTSD it was an excellent series. The oldest brother was a duke the youngest was a womanizer and gambler. They had a bastard brother Jack who was a pirate. I may reread that whole series the more I talk about it. Lol. I want to reread all this Montclair series first bc I’m not even a chapter in and I’m hooked
