Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Happy bday if it's coming in case I miss it. I never heard the cheating everyone is caught up in some sex/rape scene. A man with a man is that right?

Haha EB there is some controversy about a sodomy scene as well as a lot of whippings Jaime had to endure as a child I think. I'm not sure who sodomized who. Also, if I'm remembering correctly there is something about another character being beaten. Oh yes, and the scene where Jaime has to beat the heroine. Some people said it was abuse, others didn't see it that way. From what I heard he had to beat her because she had broken some clan rule, and if he didn't then his uncle--who was the laird??--would do it. Also, according to one reader, if she'd been a man the punishment would have been death. You know how harsh life was back in the highlands during medieval times?

message 3654: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Yes that's right it was the sodomy and the h being beaten. I remember a lot of people not understanding her being beaten in such a way.

message 3655: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments Mine is August 11th! Travis is the 27th and our FIRST anniversary is the 31st, but we don't really celebrate that one anymore since we got married.

Yeah, there is a scene where Jamie beats Claire's ass, but it was kind of funny I thought. He never does anything like that again. It spanks her basically for doing something that put many lives in danger and injured a man. Jamie is beaten in the past and when Captain Randall kidnaps him again, he rapes and beats him in the present. It takes Jamie awhile to come back from that emotionally and physically after Claire rescues him. It was hard to read and definitely will be hard to see which is why I haven't finished the season on showtime yet LOL!!!

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Not that I approve. I did finally find a book. It's going ok so far. Have we ever read anything by McNaught?

Rachel | 443 comments Elizabeth wrote: "Not that I approve. I did finally find a book. It's going ok so far. Have we ever read anything by McNaught?"

Which book? I have read one or two by her. But not all of her books are safe enough for me so I haven't read anymore than that LOL!!!

Claire's butt getting hit didn't bother me all that much. The thing is, she was in a different world where that was acceptable so it was a cultural thing, but she completely shuts him out after that and he loves her so much, he is willing to sacrifice his pride and do ANYTHING to get her to be with him again. He offers her his sword and she goes to strike him, but doesn't. She makes him promise to never touch her again or she will kill him. And he does vow and that sex scene after was pretty damn hot. LOL!

Is that Judith McNaught? If so then I've read a bunch of her stuff back in the day. She's one of my old favorites. LOL

Oh there's a present day rape scene with the hero? I don't know if I remember reading that, but it does sound vaguely familiar. I definitely wouldn't want to read that. There are too many negative aspects for me to even bother trying to read it.

Happy Birthday to you when it comes! BUT you do know that your husband's birthday is the better one don't you? The 27th...he's a Virgo and therefore superior! LOL But don't let it depress you; there has to be some ordinary people. ;-) And OMG you're a Leo like my daughter. Lovely people, but HIGH MAINTENANCE!!! ROTFL It's funny, but my husband's first day on the job where we met was on my birthday. We didn't start dating until a couple of months later, but I've always told him that he was God's bday gift to me that year! :-)

message 3659: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments Hahhahaha! How sweet is that! Yeah, I met Travis right before my 17th birthday. We started dating a few weeks later :) I'll be 29 this year!!!! Booooooo lol!

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments God to be 29 again. I'm going to be 44 in December. Blah! I had heard she was a good author and her name seems so familiar it's Judith mcnaught. I'll have to check what I have.

I'm with you EB! I'll be FORTY-SEVEN this year, so if you're looking for sympathy Rachel, you've got the wrong audience. ROTFL

Yes, EB McNaught is fantastic. I've read her WHITNEY MY LOVE, SOMETHING WONDERFUL, A KINGDOM OF DREAMS, ALMOST HEAVEN, ONCE AND ALWAYS, UNTIL YOU, AND PERFECT. That's all I can remember now. WHITNEY MY LOVE is the love story of eldest brother, who is a duke. UNTIL YOU is his younger brother's story...we meet the brother in the first book. KINGDOM OF DREAMS is their ancestor's love story...the first duke, who is mentioned in WHITNEY MY LOVE. They are all pretty awesome! They do include a few issues that we might be sensitive to nowadays...remember I read them years and years ago when I wasn't quite so picky. Sigh!

message 3662: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments What issues do they have

message 3663: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments Kingdom of Dreams of course is 100% safe so that was a good one! Something Wonderful was pretty safe as well and good. That's all I've read so far. Almost Heaven, Whitney, My Love, and Perfect are angsty but pretty safe as in no other women for the hero. Once and Always and Until You I have listed under Not-going-to-read so someone must have warned me away lol!

message 3664: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments And sorry ladies! I am getting older though! I thought I would have more money by this age hahaha

message 3665: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I'm still saying that. If my kids wouldn't need things like food, clothes, toys, video games I would be okay. Lol

message 3666: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments Well the issues the ones I won't read are that the hero is with other women after meeting/being with the heroine so I was warned away from reading them. The others are just angsty as hell but I am told good good reads and the heroes don't move on even during separations.

message 3667: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Yes those are my issues too so I'll check my library for the safe ones

message 3668: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments The two I read are definitely safe and I am told those other three on my list that RF read are safe as well - just be prepared for ANGST LMAO

message 3669: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I hate angst. Some is okay and if the couple have an understanding between each other to where they are fighting together I am ok. But if there is separation and misunderstandings galore than I get annoyed

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments Hello, I am a new member invited by Elizabeth and I recommended Judith McNaught to her. Would also highly recommend Kathleen Woodiwiss. If you read her bio she is credited with introducing us into our heroine's bedroom back in the 70's. I am an oldie...69 this year, retired 2.5 years ago and then started to finally post reviews but have now become mostly a JAFF reader. Up to about 245 reviews in the two years I have been posting.

message 3674: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Accomplishment. I have been married for 17 in October. I'll check out the other author. I've never heard of her. Pet peeves for me are H/h being in love with dead spouse or hung up on someone else but Lisa Kleypas has got me through that at times. They have to be exclusive no woman after meeting the h. I also like over protective and alpha males

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments Elizabeth, have you read the Darcy's POV trilogy by Stanley Hurd?

message 3679: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Ooh men writing romance is scary. No I have never read that one. I seen this Timothy wrote one where Lizzy marries Collins and when he dies Darcy helps her heal from the damage he did. Gasp. She had sex with Collins...the poor thing.

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments On PBS - just had two hour finale last night. First a series of 27 episodes in the 70's and now remade with Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark. You can view all the episodes for a limited amount of time on the Internet on PBS -video. Fantastic scenery of Cornish coastline, set just after the American Revolution.

Rachel | 443 comments Sheila, I am an outlander fan too. I have been nervous about finishing the first season of the show. I don't want Jamie to be unfaithful and it makes me nervous to watch this adaptation. What drew me to him in the book was that he was so damn faithful to Claire. Even when they were separated for years. He slept with what, 3 women? I don't want to actually watch that either - those parts at least.

message 3682: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments SPOILERS: Ross returns from fighting for England in American Revolution. His fiancee is now engaged to his cousin, his father is dead and his home inhabited by drunk servants sleeping in his father's bed. He saves a waif who is dressed like a boy who in turn is trying to save HER dog from a dog fight. He hires her as a maid but later seduces and then marries her. He also fights to keep the tin/copper mines open and against usury by a local banking family. Last night's finale has him dragged off to jail just after informing his wife that their toddler daughter died while both the wife and the baby were suffering from the same putrid throat ailment. He is dragged off b/c of a shipwreck casting up its cargo on his beach and his encouraging starving families to come and get food to eat from the wreckage...which is a local custom allowed but the banking family happens to own that ship and their cousin died in the wreckage.

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments 20 years oy vey!

message 3685: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments I have read up to the middle of book 4. I love that too, but what I'm saying is that I am worried about the show in regards to fidelity. Like, film adaptations of books are not 100% accurate. Like the scene in the show when Jamie spanked/beat Claire and they were fighting and "Leg hair" (that's what I call her) comes on to him. That scene doesn't happen like that in the book. He totally blows her off. He adores Claire and no one else. I am worried about what is to come. Fidelity is a HUGE issues for me when reading romance. I just can't deal with it anymore when reading.

And in the books, Jamie never moves on from Claire even though he thinks he will never see her again. It takes him 10 years just to sleep with ONE woman for a one night stand. Then he is blackmailed into having that with that other girl. THEN he finally does move on with that troll years later so we know he slept with her at least once. But that is not a lot of sex in 20 years. Because he only wants/loves Claire.

message 3686: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments He actually faints when she walks into his print shop and then upon awakening asks permission to kiss her - so sweet. We are married she replies.

message 3687: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments It was such a sweet scene. It really was. I hope the show stays true to the story and doesn't focus much on the his years without Claire.

message 3688: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments Well, the next season has to focus on their time in France and then her pregnancy(ies) and then Culloden!!!! and when he wants her to go back to modern times to be safe. (as in Book II)

message 3689: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments I know, but there is a scene in book 2 in Paris that I am hoping they keep true to the book. Where he lets that whore touch him but pushes her away and tells them that Claire is a witch LOL! Anyway, I am hoping it's true to the book and they don't take it any further like they took the "leg hair" scene. I have a sensitive heart lol

And you have to remember he thinks Claire is gone from his life. He thought and she thought he was going to die in that battle so why would she attempt to come back? So basically he is a "widower" since divorce in not an option and how can he explain Claire's absence?

message 3691: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments Oh I know all that - that's not until book 3 though. Where we get insight to what he was up to during that time. Which wasn't much. Like I said, according to the book it took him 10 years to EVEN SLEEP with another woman. They were both comforting each other though. Then there was the one that he was blackmailed into and then he finally does move on close to 20 years later. So he really stayed pretty true to Claire regardless because he loved her so much. Period. I hope they stay true to the book and honestly not focus so much on that stuff.

Considering how so many books are slaughtered in the translation to screen I believe Outlander was pretty true to the book in the first season. Not completely but close. Yes, he spanked her b/c she didn't obey orders to stay where he left her as she promised and it caused a death of a man (I seem to remember). But then he promised to never do it again.

And remember it was his sister who kept pushing Leg-hair at him. Pronounced Leary...I was told.

message 3694: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 443 comments Yes, you are correct. He would have never "moved on" otherwise, even though they hadn't been even living together by the time Claire comes back. He wasn't with anyone else. That's what I loved about Jamie. He didn't go crazy and sleep around when Claire was gone because he was absolutely gutted. He loved her so much. That's what I loved about him!

And yes, that's how you pronounce it hahaha but I can't stand that troll so I'm not nice about her. The other girl that blackmailed him was another troll. I couldn't believe it. He wanted nothing to do with her. Poor Jamie.

Sheila Majczan (sheilalmajczan) | 102 comments Do you visit or do "Pinterest"? I have boards for Austen, North and South, Outlander and Poldark. I should just name them "Men who make me drool" as the boards have mostly photos of men who star in the movies or who have been used by authors as their models, etc. Richard Armitage, Colin Firth, David Gantry, Aidan Turner...sigh!

Good morning, ladies! Hi Sheila, welcome! I'm a HUGE McNaught fan too. I still have copies of a number of her books. I was super excited when I saw that she had a couple of them available on Kindle recently, but I see that that is no longer the case. :-(

Loved all the discussions about OUTLANDER ladies, but still wont read it. Sorry! LOL Anyhow, I am traveling today so I will be out of communication until tomorrow. I hope you all have a great day.

EB as for the McNaught books they are all beautiful stories, but yes there is a lot of angst. WHITNEY MY LOVE had the couple having misunderstandings and separating at least twice. Even after they are together and happy they have an issue that results in yet another misunderstanding. That book, however, was not the typical length romance...it was really long. I LOVED it, but some of the scenes are hard to read. UNTIL YOU, the younger brother's romance is even more angsty, IMO. They build up of the romance is very beautiful, however, when the h has amnesia and the H has to play along with her belief that he is her fiance. They too end up separating and the getting back together was not an easy one.

SOMETHING WONDERFUL was absolutely absolutely wonderful! I have copies of a few of the books at home...my Mom had brought them up to me a couple of months back when she came for Hannah's First Communion, so if you need details I'll be able to provide them. Unfortunately, I can't find my copy of WHITNEY MY LOVE. I had a hardcover copy of that book, and I'm almost positive it was here at my Mom's as recently as last year, but she couldn't find it when I asked her to send me all my McNaught books and I haven't hadn't any luck since I've been here either. Ugh! BUT, Ms. McNaught is without a doubt one of my all time favorite romance writers. She's awesome! Even the angst in her stories is palatable.

The most angst-filled one, at least for me, is ONCE AND ALWAYS. The hero's history will make you want to cry, but because of it the h goes through hell with him before getting her HEA. A lot of people hated that book because of the consummation scene on their wedding night, which was, admittedly, neither tender nor sweet--that's an understatement, BTW. Nonetheless, for me going through that was well worth the romance. Again, I read these books many years ago; I'm much more picky/sensitive now. That's why I gave the caveat when I said I loved those books...I wouldn't want to lead you astray! LOL

Well have a lovely day, ladies! Have a great day at work, EB. Keep us in your prayers that we make it home safely. TTYL!

message 3698: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Well that just doesn't enjoyable to me. I am glad that we all throw in different angles bc Sheila, honey I just don't think McNaughts for me. Lol. Like you said different strokes. I know a lot of people love that back and forth but me I'm a wimp about it and I also feel sad like in your outlander conversation where mentioned being seperate do for 20 years. I have read different books where they're separated and it always pulls at my heart strings. I wish things were different for the couple but I know it's necessary sometimes.

Remember the book we read RF coming home to you? The H left the h behind to be a hot shot detective in Boston. 10 years go by and he finds out from his younger brother (a cop) that someone is stalking her and needs his help. I really fell in love with the couple bc even though time went on as soon as they see each other every touch, look feels familiar and the two are reminded of what they had. God they're passion for that really just pulled me in. And I'll clue you in Sheila I love an evil villain. The one in that book fit into that category. Lol. Anyhow come to think of it the author wanted me to review the next book which was about their friends who had phone sex. Lol. She never got back with me and sounded like she wasn't sure when it would come out. Okay well my client cancelled me for today but I have a meeting later on. I can get some reading done I hope.

I have a number of Jane Eyre DVDs but not 96. And I believe i have every version of Jane Austen's stories on DVD and had them on VHS tapes but gave those away.

I fly out to Seattle for 8 days to visit my daughter and son-in-law early on Thursday so won't be near a computer.

My tastes have changed over the years, also. That's one of the reason I read so much JAFF: I know who is ending up together and basically I know the evil guys. Although some authors do throw in a new bad guy here and there and sometimes even kill off familiar people, i.e., Mr. Bennet.

Paradise was one of my favorite McNaught books. Whitney My Love has rape which, today, I would not want to read. But I did read that book twice back in the day. Another good author who set all her book in Louisiana (if I remember correctly) is Jennifer Blake.

I am retired so I will wish all you working people a good day at work. I have shopping for my trip to do and a review to post on a JAFF book I finished early this morning.
