Okay EB, I checked out the list you gave me. The LORD OF ICE and all the other books in the series sound good, and my library has them all! Yay! I've added all those books to my TBR list--there are seven in the series. I already read, DANCING WITH A DUKE. It was a very cute read; I think I gave it 4 or 5 stars.

I actually own HER SUDDEN GROOM and it sounds promising, so I'm considering that one. I'm also thinking about The Lady Most Willing.... That's one book written by three authors all of whom writes a romance between a different couple. It sounds pretty good and the authors are all big name; Julia Quinn, a particular favorite of mine being one of the three. A Scottish lord kidnaps four young ladies as potential brides for his nephews because they are not attending to the matter for themselves. LOL Four ladies are grabbed, including one that got caught up in the mix by mistake. A duke is also mistakenly kidnapped when his coach is nabbed as a get away vehicle. LOL Anyhow, each other writes a third of the story focusing on a romance between a different couple.

Julia Quinn has the first third and is said to leave enough "breadcrumbs" to set up the romance in the other 2/3 of the book. FYI all the "victims" are taken to a castle in Scotland where they are held prisoner. They can't leave because of a snowstorm. Sounds crazy and fun! It's one book that I've had on my wish list forever. The regular price is $7.99, but it fluctuates between $3+ and $8. Finally a few days ago the price went down to .99 cents so I grabbed it.

Umm I'm torn between this one and SUDDEN GROOM. I'll decide in a bit. In the meantime I'm going to go get some housework done.

Rach sorry to hear you're having family issues. That sucks. I'm sure you're hubby understands. We can't be upbeat and chipper all the time, but take it easy on him. Remember he is your greatest ally against the rest of the world! I hope you're feeling more uplifted by now. TTYL

The more the merrier, Rachel. And we can deal with picky. Truth be told, we are all picky in our own way. EB and I hate infidelity; although I think I may be more forgiving than EB. Truthfully though I've read books where ultimately the infidelity was made acceptable, but it still left me uncomfortable. I wont tolerate it if it's current, but past acts I may be able to forgive. It all depends on how it's portrayed.

What I HATE the most is a doormat heroine! Ugh! This is especially true where the author tries to make it seem like the h is soooooo strong then she comes across as a moron when it comes to the H. Disgusting! What I especially hate is when the h sleeps with the H even though he makes it plain that he doesn't care for her, doesn't respect her, doesn't trust her, or if it's a historical romance, he doesn't want a committed relationship. UGH UGH UGH

Umm yea I figured they were. I'm torn between LORD OF FIRE and LORD OF ICE. I like the idea of a romance between a guardian and his ward, but LORD OF ICE sounds good too. Which did you prefer?

Rachel | 443 comments In Captured by a Laird by Margaret Mallory the heroine's brothers are assholes. They basically abandoned her twice in her time of need. And one of the brothers was married to the Queen and when the Queen gets sent away, he cheats on her repeatedly and very much in her face about it. Just an asshole!

It's actually pretty amazing how self centered her brothers are, but that's lucky for the H because it made it easier for him to claim the h. Can you believe their response to her missive when she informed them that the H had laid siege to her keep...hang in there?! WTF?! Morons! CAPTURED is a fantastic book, EB. You've gotta read it. Kate recommended it to be months ago when I was in the midst of my CR insanity. Finally I got around to borrowing it a couple of weeks ago. It's so good that I intend to buy my own copy. I added it to my kindle wishlist so I can price watch. Hopefully, I'll get lucky enough to grab it on a sale, but if not I'll buy it anyway.

Rachel, you see I found my next read, huh? LOL It's a book that's been on my Kindle wishlist forever. That's a list of books I want to read, but that my library doesn't have. Sometimes I get lucky and one or other goes on sale so I grab them, if not when I really really want to read the book I suck it up and buy it. On a whim I double checked with my library today and discovered, to my delight, that they now have a copy of the book AND it was available so of course I grabbed it!

This one fits the bill perfectly; it's a house party. The H is the host. The h is the daughter of a wealthy merchant/cit/tradesman, not sure which, or are they all the same? Anyhow, the h's brother meets the H while they are gambling. I think the brother mistakenly believes the H is broke and offers his sister and her huge dowry in marriage. The h's family is desperate for her to snag a title.

The H in turn invites the h's brother to his house party as a lark. He forgets about it until the brother with h and parents in tow arrive. The h is mortified, of course, but then love eventually blossoms. I have no doubt that the other well-born ladies in attendance will be a bit beastly towards the h, one can only hope. LOL I love it when the h is the underdog and the H is all about her and no other woman!!

Ooh!!! That sounds so good!!! You will have to let me know how that one works out! I am all about those kind of heroes too! You will have to let me know if there are any scenes with the hero and ow! :D

And as far as the scene with her brothers - "hang in there" that's when I had to drop the book and put a message on here! I was so damn mad I could spit! But yes, it was the best thing they could have done for her, letting the hero get to her. I am right before they get married in the book.

Will do! I'm hoping it's as good as promised. I want there to be another woman, more eligible than the h because of her birth, that tries to get the H's attention, but he doesn't pay her any mind. Love that. I haven't started reading it yet, but I do have it lined up to go. I've been trying to be good and get some stuff done around the house. Ugh!

I know those brothers are a mess, but they never make a reappearance so they wont mess with your enjoyment too much. But just wait, her family does try to intervene again later, and of course they have no thought for the h's best interests. Assholes. It's horrible that women used to be so much under the control of men. Can you imagine?

The h's daughters fall in love with the H. He is soooooo good with them. You really get to see his softer side when he is with his step-daughters.

Yes I can tell. LOL My book is pretty good. I wouldn't say it's riveting, but it's definitely holding my interest. The author is a well written one, so the story is good. I actually discovered that this is part of a series; an informal one, the author didn't list it as such. But the h and H in this book are best friends with the h and H in a previous book, which I actually own. Then there is another book after this one that is the story of the sister of the H in the first book, which I was able to borrow from the library. So I have plenty of books to keep me busy for a while, so long as my mood doesn't change. LOL

That's awesome that you can sew! I wish! My mother used to be a seamstress; she makes clothes, curtains, and can even reupholster furniture. Me? I can do nothing! LOL

No girl my h and H weren't best friends, but the H was best friends with the H in another book and the h was best friends with the h in the same book. The h and H in my book met before in Bath but the arrogant ass of a H didn't even remember her. He's the type who dallies with married ladies; I don't like that. Anyhow, the first night the h is at the house-party she comes across the H in an assignation with his married lover.

When the h tries to get away she ends up tripping and making noise so the H hurries after her and catches up and accompanies her back to the house. The only thing that saved his ass is that apparently the next day he broke things off with the married heifer...yes I said heifer. She's a real witch! Of course the h doesn't know that there is no longer an association between the H and the witch. Now I'm at the part where the bitch is confronting the h, probably because she notice the way the H keeps looking at her.

The bitch tells the h, "I have seen the way you look at him. I sincerely caution you to spare yourself the humiliation of hoping he could ever notice you. You and your family may have a high opionion of yourselves because of your wealth, but that has no significance in our circles. After all, no one knows who you are, where your people come from, or your history." Can you believe the nasty she devil?! She goes on to insult her even more by pretty much telling her that she, the h, and her family don't belong at the H's home, and then has the nerve to say that SHE feels better now that she's had that talk with the h. Of course she's only saying this because she must be aware that the H is fascinated with the h, although it is all very subtle in true Regency style.

I loved the h when she tells the bitch that "I'm so glad that YOU feel better. You are correct on one point. My family does not have an illustrious name. But WE at least have manners." I was ROTFL! I have to be honest though, Regency house party stories are not the most riveting. Sigh!

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I agree sometimes it gives too much angst. The h does sound good and the cat fight can also be fun sometimes but I agree the dallying with other wives aren't cool but I have read some and let it slide if I liked the H enough. Derek Craven was one. I even let it slide that he slept with someone else after falling for Sara. That was a first. I think it was bc he was fantasizing for Sara for one and he did tell her it wouldn't work. That softened it bc he didn't think he was good enough for her. I wouldn't want to make a habit though it still was disappointing. The blanket is actually crotchet and I am threading my yarn with sequins to look like scales. It is tedious bc I have to punch holes in the sequins first and then thread that is why I am only doing a little at a time. Lol I'll show you pics as I go so you can see.

Okay, crocheting? That's even worse. My mother crochets and knits too and I can do NEITHER! You talented artistic people are a chore. ROTFL

OMG! EB I knew you loved Derek, but I didn't realize how MUCH you loved him! You forgave sleeping with another woman AFTER he fell for the h? That's a first for you, and a clear indicator of how much you liked the H. I agree. I too hate infidelity, etc. in most cases, but if the author presents it in a particular way, I can overlook it; even forgive. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but at least I can look past it. Funny isn't it, we don't CHOOSE to overlook these incidences, we either can or we can't. I'd happily overlook every instance of infidelity in a good book if I could, but I just CAN'T. It's almost as if I'm the one being cheated on.

One of my favorite books; one I just found last week a couple of weeks ago after years of searching on and off, the couple were married then separated. They never divorced though. It's a CR. The H is a movie star. The h threw him out after they suffered a tragic incident and there were allegations that he was sleeping with his co-star. Anyhow, four years later they reunite, at the H's instigation. It's a beutiful story, but I didn't like the fact that the H admitted to sleeping with the co-star. He told the h that the rumors were not true; he wasn't unfaithful when they were together. But after the split, when the h refused to take him back, he did sleep with the woman then. Said he might as well be cooked for a goose as a gander. (I can't quite remember the exact saying. LOL) It was never brought up, but I assumed that he had other affairs during the split.

Hollywood always thought he was single. The reason I was able to put it aside is because the love story is such a beautiful one. They were college sweethearts. They got married then he got his big break and went to Hollywood to shoot a movie. She stayed behind on the East coast because she was studying for her doctorate, or masters. The rumors abounded; he didn't call home much, and was always distracted. She was pregnant. When she gave birth to a stillborn, they couldn't get in touch with him. He was spending the weekend at his co-star's ranch!

When he showed up the next day she told him to leave. He tried to contact her after that but she wouldn't listen and threw out his letters. No divorce for her because she's a devout catholic. He never filed for divorce either. He then shows up four years later to tell her that the tabloids were about to break the story of his "secret" marriage so she should be prepared for the paparazzi. When he discovers her plans for the summer he puts everything aside to make sure that they are in the same place.

At the end of the book he confessed that he was the one who leaked the story of their marriage because he wanted an excuse to come see her. It was super sweet! I LOVED Kit so I forgave him and the other woman, and I tried not to think about potential other women. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but still a five star read. I think we are a mess, you and I. LOL

message 2131: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Lol true to Hollywood that would be the case and that's sad imo. That is why when I reread Derek and Sara I skim through my favorite parts. Poppy and Harry were another couple I liked and their marriage hinged on a lie he fed Poppy to get her to marry him. When they work it out though they are so cute together. He is gets jealous when she goes out and when he confronts her you think here it comes but instead she sees that the relationship is all new to him. He is overcome with emotion and clings to her afraid she'll disappear. It's my favorite part of the book when everything is out in the open and it's just them. Sigh. I can't knit but I can do just about everything else thanks to my mom

I can relate, believe me. Well I'm done with my book. Four stars. You know after reading books set in medieval England, and the Higlands when you compare the lifestyle of the aristocrats who lived in the Regency period I can say that they were a lazy bunch! Imagine all the hard work their ancestors had to do to gain their estates and titles...the wars they had to fight. And then here we go generations down the road and some asshole loses the whole thing on a turn of a card. Plus that whole "working is against the rules" bullshit is annoying. Sullying their hands with trade! Can you imagine?! A more pretentious lot you couldn't hope NOT to meet. I want to read a book where a modern day girl goes back to the Regency period and tell those stuff-shirt puffed up peacocks whats what. LOL

Wow RF! I don't know if I would like your current read! LOL But as long as he ends it with the HEIFER immediately and there are no scenes with them together, I might be able to deal! I don't typically like when the hero's are like that - go after married women. I DID read Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale though and ended up really enjoying it. The hero starts off like that but it's before he meets the heroine. There is one scene in the beginning with him and his MISTRESS (heifer too!) but it doesn't last long and it's not very descriptive. I got over it though LOL! Have you read this book?

By the way! I am loving my current read still! I will be finished soon and I'll be writing my review!!!!

Don't forget, EB. I had the benefit of kids absentia this weekend. They went to visit with their grandparents in Burlington with their dad yesterday. Today he took them to a car show in Boston. They just got back this afternoon. Other than a little housework yesterday, and church today, I've been very much at my leisure and was able to get in some good reading time.

Rachel my book is very much like the one you mentioned; I don't rememeber ever reading that book before. The h catches the H and his mistress kissing, it's a brief scene and no real details are given. The h makes a bit of noise when she's trying to leave discreetly; the H hears her and leaves the tart and follows the h then walks her back to the house. It's not until way later in the story that you learn that he actually broke things off with the mistress the very next day. Unfortunately, the bitch is a guest at his house party, with her HUSBAND, so the h has to suffer her presence the entire time she is there. The h also doesn't know he broke things off with the heifer. I don't like men who mess with married ladies, but I was able to forgive here. It's a good book; the author is well written, but I didn't feel totally vested in the story or characters. It's a definite 4 star read. I think my mood swayed while I was reading it. I almost put it aside to reread and old favorite, but I made myself finish it. I'm glad I did because once I started reading it again it once more held my interest.

I just borrowed Never Trust a Rake. It's a reread for me; for the THIRD time! LOL I LOVE that book. Anyhow, I'm not sure if it will a complete reread or if I'll just flip through favorite parts. We'll see.

Yes I do love it. Totally and completely. Deben is another hero who dallies with married ladies, but I loved him so much I wouldn't care if he slept with nuns. Once he sets his sights on the h he is all about her. The sad thing is that he really doesn't believe he's lovable, so he thinks he has to trick the h into marriage. He realizes she's not the type to fall for wealth or title. He plans to seduce her under the guise of helping her to become more of a social success; especially with the men.

When the time comes for him to actually take her innocence so she will have no choice but to marry him, he can't do it. By then he realizes he doesn't want her forced to marry him, he wants her to choose him. When he does propose! Wow! It was quite the scene and the asshole that she was pining after in the beginning of the book gets his come uppance in PUBLIC! ROTFL

Oh you're welcome! I would have sent it yesterday, but I wasn't sure if you were ready for it. Then when I hadn't heard from you today, I figured I'd send it anyway. I hope you enjoy it!

So do we have to see him with any other ladies in the book or that is just background info about him going after the married ladies? I will have to add this one too! Tell me the name and title again LOL! This book is reminding of Judith McNaught ... what is it that book? Whitney, My Love I think.

I don't quite remember, but I don't think there were any other ladies. He's decided that he will pick a bride this season so he is forced to attend those dull season events. LOL I'm pretty sure there aren't any women, but I'm just about to start so I will let you know. If there is another woman it would be in the beginning.

He is quite a force in Society and has offered to make the h the darling of the ton in payment for her having helped him out of a sticky situation. The woman's whose plan to trap him in marriage the h thwarted is evil and the H knows that she will try to get even with the h.

BTW the asshole she thinks she loves treats her like crap. He pretty much ignores her then has the temerity to join the other heifer's "fan club." The scene where he gets publicly putdown was a scream! A HOLE! LOL It's Never Trust a Rake by Annie Burrows. She's a good author.
