Ya, I liked Driscoll's books that I've read so I got that one too. I plan to check out the end before I start reading it though. One other reviewers said she loved the Kellington Series, but this book was nothing like those books...NEVER A MISTRESS was the first book in that series.

I don't know if the Australian woman was referring to the D/S situations as being DV or if she was referring to the relationship itself. I know from reading the books that Christian is too bossy by half, and Ana is weak. The author developed her relationship to make her better by the end, but she was an annoying weakling in the beginning. At least that's how I took her. I think the books became so popular because they were so controversial. People read it just to see what all the arguments were about. That's why I read them. LOL

What really annoyed me was how much vitriol the radio announcer spouted against the woman because she didn't like her opinion. It's beyond annoying that people are so immature. She hated the movie...so what? You don't have to be a bitch about it! That's what made me mad. She wasn't giving her opinion about the books; she was giving her opinion about the movie. She saw it, so she's entitled to give her opinion. I don't know why the heifer had to react that way, and the remarks about the woman's children (that we don't even know if she has) was totally uncalled for!

The actor said the movie is pretend. I don't know what that means--are the scenes filmed using camera tricks, or are they like porn movies where the actors really do have sex, etc. with one another? I assumed it was camera tricks and not a porn movie because it's rated R. But, I'm with you, if that was my husband, I wouldn't want to see it either. The actor/actress snagged a good opportunity because this movie will make them famous. Even if the movie sucks it will still make a lot of money because some people will go just out of curiosity, and you know there's going to be a lot of controversy.

You got your taxes done?! WTH?! I'm jealous! Did you do them yourself? I'm thinking of doing ours.

I tried doing them on line with my dad but I double checked with her and she got us back 2,000.00 more back so we go to her. Lol

Okay so I checked out ALWAYS COME HOME (a freebie from our today's list.) I'm guessing the reviewers complaint--the one that said it wasn't a perfect happy ending--stems from the fact that the couple is still broke when the story ends. The H needs to marry an heiress, but he falls in love with the h, who is a penniless governess. At the end, they marry, but they still don't have much money. I'm good with that. Money isn't everything. Besides I think I'd hate it more if they suddenly landed money from some previously unknown source, which might've given the story a cheesy quality.

My accountant has been doing our taxes for years. His dad is a friend of Brian's father. The accountant and his father had their own firm, but a couple years ago they sold out to another firm, that is wicked expensive. I asked him how much it would cost to do our taxes this year and he told me aobut $600! WTH?! I've sucked it up and paid the exorbitant fees the last few years, because Brian was self-employed and then we had the short sale of our house from 2013 to deal with last year. But this year it should be a straight form 1040. I used to do our taxes in the distant past. I'm seriously thinking about doing it this year, but I'll have to do a little research first. Congrats on the refund! We should be getting money back too; but I'd rather not give a half or one third of it to the accountant! LOL

That is an insane price we go short form but at any rate it worked out and now we only have Stephanie do them. I got my hair in hot rollers almost ready to go. LOL I didn't notice that until you said something. Yes, it was a pretty awesome response. LOL

kate | 203 comments Well EB I didn't get much past you on Notorious Dukes. Was the writer on something? Sex doesn't bother me and I know it doesn't bother you Miss FSOG. It was the convoluted writing style. The shallow characters and the just dumb dialogue I won't do a review because I didn't read enough of it. Who knows it could turn out to be a pulitzer prize winner. But I'll never know

Gideon's was written by Kristin Holt and would have been a four star except I couldn't get past the first wife's situation. Yes it did remind me of Andrea Yates. Poor thing. I don't believe they were super Christian though. I don't think they attended a church regularly. I think he kept her pretty isolated. The children didn't attend school. She had no outlet. Except her husband. Another horny bastard.

That's what bothered me about Gideon. Imagine a woman isolated on a farm or ranch. With all these babies. No pampers , no washing machine, no formula. No one to help her. No mother or sister nearby if I remember the story correctly. that would be overwhelming enough. But she was dying of cancer and knew it.

Now I could be off the mark about the negative feedback on my review. However it seemed odd to me that I wrote this review last June and on Feb 11 received to slams within 45 minutes of each other. But I guess stranger things have happened.

kate | 203 comments Meant to say. I read the Traherne story and loved it. Since it's relatively short and written in 1st person narrative you feel like your reading someone's diary. Had a twist I didn't expect but I won't spoil it for you.

Yes I hear you. It's funny how one seemingly little thing about an otherwise good story can stick in your craw and ruin it for you. That certainly made the H look like an ass. I wonder why the author chose to give him such a shitty personal history. It certainly isn't romantic. Did he at least have a better perspective with the h?

I'm glad you like the Trahern one. Just remember, if you want to borrow any of the other ones they are available. I'm not sure if we've had any of the others on our freebie list, but I think we've had one other one in recent weeks past.

BTW that time travel one we had on or list yesterday, BROKEN WINGS?...I did a quick run through yesterday and it looks really good. It's about a H who lives in 1996. He's a pilot. On one flight he finds himself back in the 1940s. The h lives in that time. She is a widow. In the very beginning of the book her husband is killed, betrayed by a friend who wants the h for himself. Before the husband is even dead, the ass realizes that he made a mistake and that the h will never be his.

It seems that somehow the H is the reincarnated husband who is then flung back in time. I'm not sure if he has any memories from when he was the h's husband. All I know is that the friend--the one who betrayed the h's husband--was happy that the h was now back with her husband, which is the H...I guess he'd suffered a lot if guilt for what he had done to the husband. Anyhow that's what clued me on the fact that the H was the reincarnated husband, or something along those lines. Also there is an epilogue which is set in 1996. The h ands H had been happily married for many years at that point. I thought it was intriguing. I've lined it up as my potential next read, and I don't even like the 1940s.

If you're interested and haven't grabbed a copy, it's still free.

kate | 203 comments Ok Rf back to Gideon. The second wife was not really free to marry. She had an abusive husband who would have eventually have killed her. Her best friend works for a mail order bride agency and figures this is her only chance to escape. Unfortunately the husband beats the friend up figuring she would know where she went. The friend let's her know the husband is on his way. So our h tells Gideon the truth. He was a stand up guy about it and helps her. As I said it would have been four star if the writer hadn't made the first wife's story so pathetic. I just couldn't like him.

I'm going to check Kindle unlimited for the other Traherne stories. It''s hard to find well written short stories. The characters can appear shallow and the story rushed. But the writer nailed it by telling the story from one perspective--the narrator. As I said it was like reading a chapter out of someones diary. She also gave an epilogue paragraph if not a whole epilogue. I'm a sucker for an epilogue. Always curious to where they are a few years down the road.

Oh Kate, it looks like you lucked out...from what I can tell all the Traherns are on KU! Ya I hear you about the Gideon story. I did see that she was still married when she went west. I'm assuming that the husband conveniently dies leaving her free to marry Gideon. LOL

I got irritated reading book one of the Traherns...or maybe it was book 2. The SMARTEST HORSE one. It was told from the hero's POV and I got tired of hearing about some damn trail that he was following. LOL It was an okay read for me, overall. So far I've preferred the ones with the female Traherns. I guess it's because they remain focused on female stuff.

I read it and it would definitely give me pause before I would choose to read the book. In fact, I really enjoy knowing the kind of details you described in your review. By the time I got there the author had deleted her comment. I'm laughing a little about the only other review. Check out that reviewer's system - he uses what's written on the "back covers" of the books for his reviews. Makes reviewing easy I suppose.

message 1523: by kate (new)

kate | 203 comments Thanks Judy. Well Phoebe Conn assured me that lots of people loved her book. I can tell from all the positive reviews. She did say romantic hero's may have changed. Really. I lived 1988 and if some horny jerk tried to get a sister, friend or stranger drunk and to his hotel room my friends and I would have got together and beat him to death with our Gloria Stienam magazines.
I noticed the back cover review also. Figured the publisher probably put it in. Maybe.

So Judy what type of books do you like? I'm an historical romance junkie but I venture out to other genre from time to time. In fact I'm on my second Amy Tan novel this week. Don't think anything will beat her Joy Luck Club though. Loved it. The women became their own hero's.

message 1524: by Judy (new)

Judy | 13 comments I'm mostly reading historical romance novels - regency, some medieval, georgian when I can find some I think I might like. Right now I'm going through Patricia Ryan's "Lords of Conquest" and other series of hers. She's a really good writer, but her characters run hot and cold and make some schizo decisions. They're driving me nuts, but I'm intrigued. If you reply to this, I might not see it until tomorrow. I'm off to bed. Yes, I read Joy Luck Club years ago. There are so many good writers out there. I need to become unstuck from historical romance novels.

message 1525: by kate (new)

kate | 203 comments Yeah Joy luck was a reread for me. I was going through the bookcases trying to figure out what I'm donating to the library and came across it. Started skimming the first chapter and I was hooked again. It's probably been ten years since I read it so I forgot quite a bit of the details. Same thing happened with a couple of James Herriot books. So far the library isn't doing to well donation wise.

Good morning, ladies! I made top 1000 reviewer on Amazon! Now my life is complete and I can die a happy death! I'm so pathetic. Sigh.

Hey Judy. Nice to hear from you. I'm the exact same with books--historical romance is my main genre, especially regency, medieval, and highland--not necessarily in that order. Up until recently, I'd only read about two contemporary romances in the last few years, but since January I've read over 2 dozen! I don't know what happened, but I read the first one and it just sucked me in. Right now I'm on a contemporary romantic suspense kick. I've read a dozen so far. I'm really weird like that; I get into a particular mood and it sticks with me for a while.

The good thing is that once I'm done and go back to HR--which I definitely will--I know that I'll read the occasional CR from time to time and not totally ignore the genre as I have been the last few years. The same was true for Westerns. I had only read a
few, ever, then after I got my kindle I downloaded a few freebies and really got into the genre. Now I mix them in from time to time with my other HRs.

I have to say that the Kindle has done wonders for my reading; and to think I owned my first one for a YEAR before I started using it--except for the occasional web search, etc. As you can tell, romance is my main thing. I'll read pretty much anything if you throw in a little romance. LOL However, back in the day I read any and EVERYTHING! Detectives, psycho dramas, thrillers, horrors; you name it, I read it. I actually find myself moving more towards the thriller stuff lately, hence the romantic suspense. But I recently downloaded a Kindle First novel--it's about a girl who escaped the clutches of a serial killer, but he got her friend. A year later, there's another murder that is similar to her friends, and she goes to help the police--being the only vic who ever survived. There's no romance in that one, at least I don't think there is, but I find myself drawn towards reading it, so I'll probably succumb to the urge soon. LOL

I read the JOY LUCK CLUB myself, way back, and watched the movie. Book was better, no surprise there. So Kate, the author removed her comment from your review, huh? Interesting! Like I said before, I didn't like it; even though it was fairly polite. It left a bad taste in my mouth. It shouldn't matter that her book won an award and that it's so popular...those facts are irrelevant to how you felt about the book. She was basically telling you--without actually saying it--that you're opinion was wrong.

And BTW, Missie, WHY are you going through books for library donation? Shouldn't you be RESTING??!!!! I had to laugh, though, when you said the library was getting the short end of the stick. My daughter is the same way. I was going through her books to see which ones I could donate to the library--books that she has pretty much outgrown. Well the "keeper" pile was much much bigger than the "donate pile." LOL

She has definitely inherited the reading gene from me and her father, she's placed first for reading the most minutes every month for the last three months, and the first two months she placed second. For January, she read over 2700 minutes! Even her teacher was stunned. Well I'm off to check the freebies for today.

EMMA AND ELIZABETH sounds like a good read. It's said to be based on THE WATSONS "a novel fragment of Jane Austen" whatever that means. In any event, it looks like the sort of book that would appeal to JA fans--assuming the author can follow through on its promise.

FYI apparently there's no real pirate in SWEET PIRACY. The H is a privateer and he and the h meet on the high seas and later on land. Reviews are mixed.

Please read reviews for GYPSY BOND carefully before purchasing this book. I think it's one that has a pathetic spineless heroine--exactly the type I hate. I'll be passing on this book.

CAPTIVE is a highland romance, and you all know how much I love my Highlanders. However, I'm gonna pass on this one, free though it may be. The first review clinched it for me. I see I left a comment a while back when I first came across this book. Anyhow, check out the review and decide for yourselves. It's one of those books where the H is an irredeemable ass, yet the h falls in love with him. Sigh

WELLINGTON ROSE is the third book in the Wellington Cross Saga. We've had the first two books on our freebie list in the past. FYI, those books are also free, and I've added them to the list in case anyone is interested but missed them in the past. I've also include a novella WELLINGTON CHRISTMAS which is also a repeat from a past freebie list. I think that makes the entire series now.

I have to say WELLINGTON CROSS sounds really intriguing. It's about a woman who has lost her memory and is told by one that that they are betrothed, but later finds out that she was married to another man and they have a baby together. The H, her husband, is now married to another woman, with whom he stays even after he discovers the h is alive, because he his current "wife" is pregnant. There is some conspiracy involved to keep the H and h apart, for some unknown reason. I really need to read this book. I think it's right up my alley right now. LOL The rest of the books in the series are about other family members.

A ONCE AND FUTURE LOVE is a time travel medieval romance. A modern day H finds himself in medieval times in the body of one of his ancestors. Sounds good!

That's it for today, ladies. FYI we have another blizzard heading our way later this evening It's supposed to last through til tomorrow 11 a.m. I'm not sure who else it's supposed to affect, but I hope you all stay safe and WARM. As for myself, I am heading to my sister in law's house BEFORE the storm hits this time. I just cannot do another 36 hours in a freezing cold house if we lose power, and considering this is another coastal thing and I live by the water, losing power is a safe bet. TTYL!

Okay I sent the book. FYI I checked out Kelleher. I have no idea why she seems familiar to you--it's not from me. I don't think I've ever read her before. The freebie on the list sounds really good. It also got quite a few good reviews. I'm trying to get my house in order before we head out to my sister in law's later. We will be spending the night there. Hopefully we can come back home some time tomorrow. I also hope SHE doesn't lose power, but even if she does it's better than losing power at our place. We live in a "summer" cottage; no basement. It's been winterized, but we have nothing to add heat; not even a gas stove for chrisssake! My sister in law has a fireplace, gas stove and a basement, so her house is much warmer than ours. TTYL

I got the book thanks. I keep thinking of my movie last night I think that's why I am having so much trouble getting into these others. I started reading book 3 of FSOG but I think the one you sent me should do nicely. The lady I'm with today doesn't like to do a whole lot so I'm sure I'll be able to get some time to read. I am now thinking that Kelleher was a character in one of the books I've read. The origins of the name are Irish so I am thinking in one of my Clan books I read late last year. It's driving me crazy so I'm going to go through my reviews and check. Let me know if you find it first.

OMG! You keep notes of your summaries? You're worse than I am, and I'm pretty bad. LOL Could it be you're thinking of Helen Keller? That's who it made me think of. Haha Yes, I definitely think the movie is stuck in your head and that's what's messing with your reading. That happens to me sometimes; usually it's another book that's the problem, but occasionally it will be a movie, or even a television show.

Let me know what you think of TARGETED. I haven't read it as yet. I'm still plodding through HIDDEN. I haven't read so far today. I'm straightening up and packing for our move to my sister in law. We're expecting the blizzard tonight; although I hear there's another storm on the horizon for Wednesday.

How about you Kate? Any blizzard warnings? And where are you Judy? I'm in MA, south shore, just north of the Cape. Kate is in NY. EB's in Ohio.

I have a notebook and sometimes when I read and there is a gap like with outside interruptions I jot down thoughts or summaries to help when I review. Especially character names and so I just have one notebook that is only used for that and I didn't find a thing. I even went onto a sight that said it would help if you didn't know title or author. Nothing. When I punch in the name I get a Tracy which sort of sounded familiar but none of the books set well with me. I just give up.

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I am so glad to be home. I was on my way home and I got to this hill and was headed on the downward slope and at the bottom was a traffic light. Of course it was red so I started hitting my brakes not that I was going fast anyhow. I started to slide sideways and spun completely around facing on coming traffic. I ended driving back up the hill, on the wrong side mind you, and took another way home. So glad there wasn't a lot of traffic and that I am now under a blanket in my chair. I got a little reading in on HTR my lady was telling me stories and we played Family Feud on the TV so I'm gong to stay up and read some more bc what I've read is really good. They are flashing back when she got shot defending Rachel so its tying the stories together. Maybe they'll have Jake and Rachel in this one too and tell you how they're doing.

Wow, Liz! That was a crazy ride home! I'm glad you made it safely. Ya I was wondering how they would tie the two books together because they are each a standalone. So they used a flashback? That was smart. I did read a little of the end and Jake and Rachel were mentioned, but I don't know how much they are actually in the book.

So now our blizzard is expected to last through early Monday morning, with the worst occurring during the day tomorrow. Originally it was supposed to be from 7 p.m. tonight though 11 a.m. tomorrow. I'm so over these long drawn out storms!!!

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I know it's so cold here I thank god for our woodburner it feels so good walking in and feeling that heat. Be careful if you go out I am so mad bc I have seen no salt or plow truck out at all. If they would throw some salt down the roads wouldn't be a sheet of ice as they are

Well so far we're surviving the blizzard. We're still at my sister in law's and plan to head home tomorrow. It wasn't as bad as we expected and we're told the we never lost power at our place...of course. Had we stayed there, no doubt we would have lost power and would've frozen to death...isn't that the way of life? LOL

Anyhow, I may not get to the freebie list tomorrow as I anticipate that getting out of here will be a big bloody ordeal. Sigh. I had to pack a bunch of crap to bring with us, because there was the possibility of a power outage at my sister's. If I can't get to list, I'll make it up to y'all on Tuesday. Don't even think of docking my pay, Kate!!! :-)

Of course I had tons of time to read and nothing else to do, but just couldn't get into my book. So, yet again I've wasted an entire day of reading time. I also didn't read at all yesterday, what with all the storm preparation we had to do. Hopefully we'll get home in a timely manner tomorrow and I'll be able to get in some decent reading time. One can hope.

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments I got off sooner than I thought we had sun today but it is -9 outside now. RF I can't wait for you to read the book you leant me I got a bit left but it is soooo good. I can't wait to read the next one bc this book has the couple building in this one just like her other book but I'm jumping ahead. The couple in this are so good together and the H is so awesome. Tough but so in tune with the h. I love that he demands all or nothing to her and let me tell you when the love scene happens it is so erotic/sexy. Wow. Ok well stay warm and use your snow day for the freebie list. Lol

I have the next book on a price watch. BTW the h in the next book, she's Tuck's cousin or something isn't she? I'm glad that you're enjoying it so much. It sounds good!

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Awesome. It should be Brads cousin Zoe. I just finished the book and will do my review later when I get home. Okay I'm going to see what else I have to read

Hi guys! I'm back at home...finally! Brian came over a bit earlier than I did with the kids, so that he could shovel the driveway, etc. The heat wasn't working and the house was in the high 40's. Sigh! Luckily he just had to turn it off then back on and it started to heat up the place. I think it just needed to be reset...at least that's what the powers that be tells me. LOL Anyhow, it's now almost 60 degrees inside so, while I'm not exactly toasty warm, we're doing okay. We have some space heaters that are helping to keep us warm while the central heat does it's thing. The poor system would probably go into overload it if had to heat the house quickly.

Anyhow, no freebie list today, but I did come across an Ava Stone freebie that I just had to pass on. She's a pretty good author, and I have no idea how long this book will be offered for free. So, I figured I'd let you all know about it ASAP, just in case Amazon decides to up the price back tomorrow.

Ah, yes Liz. I remember Zoe being related to Tuck, but I wasn't sure if she was a cousin/sister or what. I wonder if we'll meet the couple for book 4 in the next book, or have you met them in book 2? I can't remember the names. Sorry!

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments She is his cousin but like a sister to him. Clay Bauer is Brad's new roommate after Evers left with Rachel and Zoe gets to know Clay through her cousin. He's just gone through a nasty divorce and ironically enough his ex sought her out for counsel but she didn't take her case. She is really likeable and quirky and Clay is dealing with back issues and a wounded heart but still can't help but think about her all the time. Anyhow I retuned your book and posted my review. I really liked it but the villain was not evil enough for me so I am still holding out for a better villain. She's gotten better with each book so third times a charm. LOL I started reading A Gentleman Never Tells and so far its pretty good. I want to check out more on KC's HRT series. Rachel and Evers were not in this book very much. A mention of Rachel and Evers here and there but not anything like in the wallflower series. Speaking of which have you read Derek Craven's book yet?

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Ok so the next book sounds good but no one really answers what I want to know bc they don't say if the villain is evil or not. That is the only aspect I want to see her explore more. The heat sounds awesome between them and I know she's delivered in that aspect with her other 2 reads. Book 4 is about DeLuca and B. Deluca is brought up a lot in book 2 so you'll be more familiar with him by the end of that book. I guess Bauer is a bit of an alpha male. You know how I love them. Watch the price but when I get done with this one I will be tempted. LOL

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Hunted and Disavowed. Book 4 is DeLuca being able to move on after the death of his wife. The review I read said that KC did a great job at showing him being able to keep her in his heart but want to move forward with Briar is her name. By the sounds she is in their line of work and a badass. Some complained of Zoe but what I read of her in book 2 I liked so we'll see.

No, I haven't. First, I was waiting for the perfect time to read my first Kleypas book; I wanted a nice chunk of time where I could devote myself to it. But with the holidays and the crazy period leading up to them, I knew that wasn't going to happen. And since the year started I've been reading contemporary books. I can tell I'm in the mood for a switch now, though. It's been three days since I last picked up the book I'm reading. I'm stuck at 63%. While I'm reading, it keeps me engaged, but when I put it down I have a hard time picking it back up. It's not the book; it's me. I'm bordering on a slump. I think if I switch genres I might be able to avoid it. I've been reading nonstop since the New Year, and have loved it.

I'm watching the price for the next HRT books. I got book 2 for $1 less than the regular price. If they don't come down soon, I may give it and get them anyway. Hubby got me a GC for Val Day. I've got quite a bit of GC money, and he says that's what it's for--buying my books even when they aren't on sale. LOL

Did you grab the Ava Stone freebie? I posted the link in my earlier comment. GENTLEMAN will probably be a good book. I like that author. I have one of the other books in the series; Phoebe's companion. I can't remember her name right now, but she should be in GENTLEMAN. That book is the second in the series, More Than A Governess.

Elizabeth Bennet (janetspringer) | 1740 comments Oh yes I forgot your CR phase. Lol I went through a phase after watching FSOG where my mind would wonder wile I read. I was looking for the connection I felt in that story. I hate sometimes starting all over. Especially if the story starts out supper slow
