Hey Kate, I hope it does turn around for you. That would be great. You would hate the book I just read with the H who can't get over the death of his wife, talking out loud to her picture about her "leaving him too soon" and crying. LOL Made me think of you. BTW this was 42% into the book. BTW I found this freebie. Not sure if it's ever been on any of our freebie lists, or if you already have it, but the H has a learning disability. I figured a disability is a disability and maybe it'd be right up your alley. LOL I read it while back. It's short, but cute, if I remember correctly.

kate | 203 comments Read it already. I'm pretty sure I liked it. I'll have to check and see if I did a review on it. I don't think he was really disabled. I think he had just never learned to read.

Got one for you . Mail order bride. Did you read Heartbreak Creek by Kaki Warner. The h is marrying to get away from a post civil war south and she takes with her a black companion from the old plantation. The companion is actually her sister from another mother. The h doesn't want to hide the fact they're sisters but the sister does. Different type of mail order bride. KID ALERT there are several children in this book. It was pretty good anyway.

Good morning, ladies. Here are a few freebies.

MADE WITH LOVE is a contemporary. Again, no idea why it popped up in a search for Historical romance. :-)

The MAIL ORDER BRIDE one sounds pretty good. Two brides for the same groom meet on the train traveling west. LOL According to one review, the H sends off for brides for himself and his brother, without telling the prospective brides OR his brother. Haha Anyhow, apparently this book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Only one bride finds love and there is a killer who is left on the loose. According to the review, this book is 1/3 of the story. I'm not sure how much stock I'd put into the review; however, as it's entitled "Three Angry Brides" but in the first line of the review, it says that "Thomas sends for 2 brides"...can anyone then explain the review's title? LOL I did check further and discover that three are indeed three brides. Seems they all met on the train while traveling west. God what a mess!

TRUTH BE TOLD is another of those books that carries a regular price of $14.99. It's by the same author that wrote that other freebie we got, TROUBLE IN STORE.

UPON WINTERS KNIGHT and HAUNTING SECRETS are two brand new books with no reviews. The first one sounds like a fantasy. The second maybe a vampire or some such paranormal...at least it says the H hasn't been alive in over a year, so whatever the heck that means. Anyhow, it's never a good sign when there are typos int eh book blurb. I mean, by God, if you can't take the time to put forward a professional first step you are doomed to failure. The blurb for UPON WINTERS has a few mistakes -- do for due, for example. Ugh Is this a sign of what one can expect in the book itself? One wonders.

Just for you, Noreen. Book five in Parker's MASQUERADE series, THE GAMBLE. We got book 1, CAPRICE, on our freebie list about a month ago. We've been doing the list that long, haven't we? I know I have that one, and I got book 3, BEGUILED back in March. Anyhow, whether you have any of the others or not, here's book 5. BTW, I notice that when I bring up the webpages for the other two books that I have, they don't show that I already own them. Apparently, Amazon has changed the links for them. Just wanted to let you all know that Amazon does that from time to time, for some unknown reason. It makes it possible for one to purchase the same book twice by mistake. I thought I already owned book 1, but when it didn't show as a purchase, I checked my cloud contents to be sure, and sure enough there it was. When I clicked on the link for the book I owned, the webpage that came up said "sorry, the webpage isn't functioning."

That's it for the freebies for today.

Kate, I'm sure you were super disappointed when the H in LOVE BY THE LETTER didn't have an actual disability. LOL No, I haven't read HEARTBREAK CREEK, so thanks for the rec. I'll check it out. Oh, and thanks for the ALL CAPS kid alert. ROTFL BTW the book I just read, the H had a six year old daughter who was way too much the focus of the damn story! I think I may start that freebie from today's list, HAUNTING SECRETS. I'm in the mood for a little intrigue. TTYL

Hey Noreen, here's a book that's on one of those Kindle Countdown deals. It's now available for .99 cents instead of 2.99. I got the other two books in the trilogy as freebies a while back, and knowing that you also check for freebies regularly, I thought that you might also have them and want to get this one. Anyhow, here's the link.

kate | 203 comments Ok. Douglas is a bust for me. Did a little over one third the book and thought why am I punishing myself. It's not that bad just dull. Except for the 5 year old Shirley Temple wannabe who is to cute for words. OK I have a word. Blech.

I won't review it because I didn't read enough to be fair. But I checked my reviews and I did review The Heir by GB. I did some skimming with that one and wound up giving it one star. Which I hardly ever do. Maybe I just don't get Grace Burrows who has a wonderful vocabulary and can really turn a phrase. But since I'm two for two in the thumbs down dept I'll skip her in the future.

Aw Kate, I'm sorry to hear that. I don't think I've ever read anything by GB. But, with my memory, who the heck knows. I just finished What the Duke Wants yesterday. For the most part, I liked it. I like the author's style. The story was lighthearted and fun, with a bit of angst mixed in. What I couldn't get past--and I tried, believe me I tried--is that the premise of the book was too contrived. The H is a duke, the h his governess, so they conceivably cannot be together. OK, I got that at first, because although we read about lord/governess relationships all the time, they were not the done thing back then--not in real life at any rate. He sent her and his wards off to his country estate, telling the h that he's removing her because of the attraction between them, which cannot go anywhere. OK, I was good with that too.

But, when he discovered that she was the impoverished daughter of a Baron that impediment was removed. So then, the source of the problem between them was the fact that he didn't communicate to her that his intentions were honorable. He just continued kissing her at every opportunity, so of course the poor girl thinks he's interested in a fling. What else is she supposed to think?!

And even after they get found in a compromising position and he tells her he will wed her, the he thinks that he's going to be a laughingstock for marrying his governess. OK, by this time I was starting to get annoyed, but I was still willing to go along with her thinking. BUT, after her lawyer told her that she has money--they thought she was broke because of some bad investment, so she had no money for the upkeep of her estate, which she then had to rent and go find work, so she technically wasn't broke, broke, if you know what I mean--she continued to think that she could never have the duke. NOW I was DONE!!! Because she knew he loved her--the meddling Lady S had told her that--she knew he was going to marry her--the DUKE had told her that--so I had no idea WTF her problem was! So, when they finally got their HEA and she was so amazed and overjoyed, I found her reaction unrealistic, stupid, dumb??? I don't know what word to use, but hopefully you get my drift. Because as far as I was concerned the writing was on the wall from way back and she was just too stupid to see it. So, a lovely book, but alas, only 3 stars.

That's it for today, ladies. The last one is set in New Orleans, with a creole heroine. She ends up in the hands of slave traders and is taken to the islands and sold as a slave. The H is a wanted man on the run...he's American too. Anyhow, hope you find something on today's list. TTYL

RF~ I read this book some time ago and I did not like it and probably could have lent it to you. I put my review up and all I remember was that I had Lisa Kleypas in mind when I got it so that reflected greatly on my opinion of the book. I'll have to glance back and see what I liked and didn't like.

Ya I hear you. I really liked it in the beginning even though there were a couple parts that gave me pause, but then it started to get tedious. I'm giving it 3 stars. It's cool about the lending. I actually didn't buy it, but borrowed it from friend. I'm reading His Impetuous Debutante right now. BTW, do you know I have still not heard from anyone about that book I stopped reading. I cannot believe it. I hope they don't contact me asking for my review. I'm assuming they got my message, but if not then oh well. You have the messages that you can go back to and so can they and they can see for themselves that you messaged them. When Natalie said she did not get the e mail for my review we scrolled up in our old massages and found where she had given me the wrong one. I wouldn't worry about it because you've told them if they neglect their messages they can only be mad at themselves. As you've said you could review it but they aren't going to want to print it. I have been so busy with job interviews that I haven't had time to read. I am still working on the book you gave me and it isn't that long but I have to tell you I love the way this author writes. Her characters are fun but I haven't got to the mother but between her sisters and sons description and by the end (which I read) she must be some piece of work. I can't wait to get to it because she sounds like a Catherine DeBourg and Elizabeth feel to it. I loved how Lizzy put her in her place and hope Annabel does the same. Okay well you ladies have an awesome day of happy reading. I plan on snuggling in a blanket with my books. :)

I'm really not worried about it. It's not like I'm getting paid. That being said, I am the type of person who likes follow through and when I commit to doing something I try to do my best, even if, like this instance, I'm not getting anything out of it. I assume they are in a business. They agreed to review the book for the publisher or author, so I'd like to think they are professional, on at least some level. So, of course, I want to do my part; the part I committed to do. But they make it so difficult, don't they? I mean the messages are there as proof, but I'd like to know that they go them and have taken the necessary steps to follow up, either by having someone else read the book or by contacting the author/publisher and letting them know the situation. But, at the end of the day that's not my problem. I tend to worry overmuch. LOL

There isn't too much of a showdown between the h and the mother, if I remember correctly, but she does stand her ground. Who I love is the duke and how protective he is of the h. And HE does stand up to his mother whenever necessary, although he'd rather have peace. He's a cutie!

Ya everything you've said is right. I'm not sure how the whole reviewing business works, but this last book I received they forwarded in an email they had gotten from the publisher who wanted to coordinate the release of the review with some other things that was going on promotion-wise. So it's obviously a business, and like you said, it's the authors livelihood. That's why I'm so concerned that they received my message in a timely manner. Although I didn't like the book, it's not like it doesn't have any redeeming qualities and someone else could read it and love it. As a matter of fact, I checked Amazon and it has about three or four reviews, all of which are positive. Of course those could be by family members, friends, or others who, like myself, were asked to review it. Who knows? The point is I'd have liked to have gotten some kind of response to be sure that they had received my message. At the very least a "thanks for letting me know" acknowledgment.

You had wanted to read my book? Did you tell them that? I know one of Lark's pet peeve is the grieving hero. Haha She cant' stand that. This book would've been a nightmare for her. It's not one of mine, which is why I know this one is pretty horrible. Grieving doesn't usually bother me.

I hear what you're saying. Lori recently left, so that just leaves the two. Yes, there were only three of us. I can't remember what the other girls name is.

OK I thought that was your pet peeve too but it was Lark. When I read the synopsis I liked the one I got and I liked the one you chose only because they mentioned the location and it sounded a lot like the ones I read now only the present tense. It also mentioned the daughter would make you laugh and I do like kids and animals both in stories. That is unless it is overdone but the drawback was the mention of him mourning his late wife and the way it was phrased was will he be able to let go of the past and I thought nope I'm going to wait and see what you think. And I was thinking you didn't like old mourning spouses so I was thinking it strange that was the one you chose. May be Kate or Noreen also said that because I was thinking it was someone in our group now. Let me tell you by the way that in my job search we have a job search called indeed.com I think it would be where you are too. Anyhow if you punch in your area and for the category or field type in blogging there are jobs that are listed and all that is required is a strong knowledge of a subject. It can be anything but my understanding was that you want to appeal to your readers the wages you would make would be based on how often you would blog. I would like to get into something I could work from home but I'm not sure that's for me but it may work you. It says it's not enough for a complete salary but I know you stay at home so it might help you out. I am checking into a side business and am just starting out. Anyhow boy did I stray off I need to get back to my book they are meeting mommy dearest. LMAO

Hahahaha "Mommmy Dearest" is the perfect title for THAT woman. Did you ever see that old black and white movie, entitled MOMMY DEAREST? I think it starred Betty White as the mother from hell.

So, how's the job search going? Yes, I've heard about indeed.com. I think they are all over the country. Yes, I would LOVE to do something from home, and although I do stay at home, that's only for now, and some extra money would definitely be welcome. That's a good idea, actually, the blogging I mean. So long as it's something I know about and/or know about. LOL I should check into that. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, the mourning doesn't bother me. But obsession and guilt over the death? OMG! That's another story. Oh, the kid was too much. Now, y'all know I prefer no kids, but it is NOT a pet peeve. I actually loved the three girls in WHAT THE DUKE WANTS. And yes, it totally depends on how much the kid is focused on in the story. In this story, that six year old was too front and center. There were two romances going one, one between the H and his dead wife, and the other between the h and the 6 year old. ROTFL

I never saw her in mommy dearest (only the color version) but I saw Betty Davis in one where she was a nanny. Holy sh*t was she scarey. I think I got a job as a caretaker. I love the sounds of it. It is light housekeeping, fixing meals, motivating, and companionship for seniors. I go to their home and give in home care. I love the sounds. I feel like I'm living one of my books being a ladies companion. LOL No seriously I helped care for my grandmother and I have always got along better with people older than me more than my own age. I know that sounds weird to some but it's probably why I'm so enthralled with period books because it has always appealed to me. Anyhow the owners of the company are beautiful men and I really loved what I saw.

Good morning, ladies. Here are a few freebies for today. This first book is the first in the KELLINGTON SERIES. We had book 4 as a freebie on our list a few days ago. I read and LOVED this book, although there were others who didn't share my enthusiasm. LOL Enjoy!

FYI, MAID FOR THE BILLIONAIRE is a contemporary romance.

EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE sounds like a psycho thriller! I don't know what time period it is, probably modern day, and it doesn't say anything about a romance, but it popped up, it's free, and it sounds interesting, so it made our list. LOL

CHRISTMAS LESSONS is a contemporary Christmas novella. Sounds sweet!

I don't know about CHEYENNE THANKSGIVING, but that book is written by the same author who wrote CHEYENNE CHRISTMAS, which was a 5 star read for me. If we get lucky, CC will become available as a freebie soon.

WELLINGTON CHRISTMAS is part of the WELLINGTON CROSS series. As you see, books 1 and 2 have also made it on our list today. Although, they might both be repeats from weeks previous--I'm not sure right now, but I AM pretty sure that at least one of them has been on our list. In any event, the three books listed is the entire series, to date.

That's it for today, ladies. I hope you find something you like.

Sounds awesome! I saw your review for the MISTLETOE MISTRESS. I'm glad you liked it. I think I have it 4 stars too, but I can't really remember. It was either that or 5 stars. I'm done with my book His Impetuous Debutante. I liked it, and am giving it 3 1/2 stars. I'm in the middle of my review right now. It has a lot of errors and desperately needs an editor, but I liked the story; although I do see why so many people complained about it. It has a lot going on.

There's intrigue because someone is trying to kill the h; there is a little paranormal because the H's late wife appears to him in his dreams to warn him of dangers to the present wife; and in the beginning the story, the h's impetuousness is to the point of stupidity on a couple of occasions. WHY did I like it? I don't know; I just did. LOL

The job sounds good. What do you mean you THINK you got it? LOL My mother used to work as a caretaker to the elderly. I remember when I was in nursing school she shared one of her jobs with me. We used to go in every weekday morning for a few hours and care for a gentleman in his 90's...bathe him, feed him, etc. He was a sweetie. Mom let me work with him three mornings a week so I could make some money. She had another full-time night job on top of that one, so it worked for her as well.

A job liked that would be a good fit for you. So long as you're client is sweet. Most of the elderly are, though. It's just a few that are ornery, and even then, usually they are lonely and just want someone to listen to them gripe. LOL Did you say the men who run the agency are BEAUTIFUL? Haha

An ice storm?! Sounds horrible, but as you say, a perfect excuse for staying in!

I say I think because they still have to do the background check and check my references. I haven't go the official word but I'll be fine with what they have left to do. The men that own it are beautiful spirits is what I meant. One came in singing and the other one talked to me like he knew me forever. I love that. Everyone was so friendly and we sat and had coffee during the interview. It was the most relaxed interviews I've ever had. Yes an ice storm I slid through the intersection coming home. No, no, no! No contemporaries, please! Remember my last, most recent experience?! ROTFL Thanks anyway. I'm actually going through my books. I've been organizing them by genre over the last week or so, and have actually made a dent in it. Can you believe that? As I go through I am discovering all the treasures I have in my cloud. Ahhh it's like Christmas! Thanks for the offer though. I've actually found a few good ones; I just don't know which one to read first. I'm in the mood for a regency. That's what I've been reading my last couple of books.

Hey Kate, I'm so excited! As I went through my cloud I discovered a book with a hero who has an honest to goodness disability!!! He's DEAF! He suffered an injury at Waterloo which resulted in the loss of hearing. Here's the Amazon link. If you wanna read it, let me know. I gave it 3 1/2 stars. I think it was a little slow. Anyhow, the only other review was 2 stars.

kate | 203 comments Thanks RF. Just finished The Overlords Bride by Margaret moore.. The H can only speak in a whisper because his first wife tried to cut his throat. He killed her. Well at least he didn't spend a lot of time crying over his dead wife. I really liked it.

Elizabeth I would like to borrow Archer's Voice if you don't mind. It's on my wish list.

Wow! A H who admittedly killed his late wife! That's a switch. I'll have to check it out. I like Margaret Moore. Oh, I may actually have that book on my wishlist. Yup, I do! My library doesn't have a copy, so I've been waiting for the darn price to go down! BTW, let me know if you decide you wanna read LOST AND FOUND at any point in the future. TTYL! I've yet to choose a book, but I have a few potentials to narrow down.

And of course you want to read ARCHER'S VOICE; doesn't he NOT talk? ROTFL

kate | 203 comments Well in his defense she was trying to cut his throat at the time. It was a knee jerk response.

I have a couple of Margaret Moore books on my wish list. The only one they have on Live-brary is TOB.

Kate~ Sure you probably would like it because of your particular taste for disabilities. I would just need your email in order to pass it through to your kindle. :)

I've heard nothing from her. But I better not because I've already told her how it's going. LOL.

I'm reading The Irish Upstart, but honestly it's not grabbing me. I cannot believe the piss poor job Ms. Kennedy did with the titles and forms of address in this book! It's a source of great irritation to me. You know that's one of my top pet peeves!

Here's an example, Lord Linberry, Marquees of Westhaven. Shouldn't that be Lord Westhaven? Then she addresses the second son, the hero, as Lord Linberry also. WTF?! He should be Lord Thomas, NEVER Lord Linberry. I'm so disgusted! The only titles she's gotten right so far are the ones for the eldest sons, and heir to the title. They each have a courtesy title and she properly has them addressed as Lord Title, not Lord Last Name. This MUST be one of her earlier books. I'm gonna check.

IRISH is her fifth book. I've read one other that was written earlier than this one I don't remember her mangling the titles and forms of address as she did in this book, although I will admit is been a while since I read that book. So who knows? I remember her books being very accurate and true to the time period. This one is annoying me no end!

RF~ I am really enjoying Gone Before Goodbye it has a dark twist within the story but the romance is slow and gentle because of what else is going on. It is really hitting a high note for me. I thought maybe Nat would let you know that she got your message. Oh well I'm going to go read some more I should finish it today. :)

OMG! This book must have been written by a ghost writer! There's no way Shirley Kennedy wrote this hot mess of a story! Not only has she completely destroyed the forms of address, there's a part in the story where we switch from "winter is approaching" to "it's spring." WTF? I got whiplash when that happened. Oh and just in case you're wondering, no months hadn't passed, but a mere week and a half, MAYBE two!

Then in the beginning of the book, we have the hero telling his father that it was "not likely" that he would marry the woman his father wished him to marry. He then tells his father that "I'm not the marrying kind, but if I do, it will be for love, not because it's expected of me." Then later in the book he's thinking "if he married anyone it would be Bettina Trevlyn..." And still later he tells the h that "it is my father's wish that I marry Miss Bettina...eventually I probably shall." WTH? Why the sudden change of mind? Oh, and now, his sister confronts him with the fact that he's in love with the h, and he's thinking that he didn't want to fall in love and that he hadn't lost his heart to the heifer his father wants him to marry, "which was exactly as it should be. Although he fully expected to develop some sort of affection for her when and if they married,..." I thought he wanted to fall in love. Or maybe not WANTED to, but he definitely didn't want to get married unless he was in love. Now he's saying the complete opposite! This story is all of the place. The author contradicts herself at every turn. It is so annoying, more so because I feel as though I've wasted a perfectly good Sunday on this mess! I'll finish it, but ONLY because I'm already at 70% and it's only just over 200 pages long. Ugh!

I'm so disappointed. Here again is an author that I've read and enjoyed before, who has completely let me down!

RF~ Out of respect she most certainly should have acknowledged you. She has always IM'd me on FB. She said she didn't want to rush me when I said I'd have my review done by Tuesday. I'm done with the book and want to give myself time to let all my emotions settle in before I write it. Which is why I said by Tuesday and not tomorrow. So I'm going to read a little short read in the meantime. LOL!

When you sorted your books was it hard or self explanatory? I want to separate my short ones from the longer reads.

Ya I hear you about the Nat situation, but as we've surmised so far, there's a level of professionalism that is missing from the whole operation. I don't know that I'll read anymore books for them. The way they handled this situation is very off-putting. Maybe they just want people who will give a book a positive rating--or at least a 3 star one--no matter what. If that's the case then I'm not the person for them. The funny thing is that I rarely go below a 3 star review. I always try to be fair and give the author due credit for the time and effort they put into the book. However, if a book leaves me angry, frustrated, or bored, then I have to rate based on how I feel, don't I? I mean it's not like I'm a professional critic. I'm just a reader giving my unbiased opinion about a book I've read. Oh well. It's really no loss. It's not like I was getting paid and truly I'd rather read contemporary when *I* want to read it, and not because I have an obligation.

I created the groups into which I wanted to organize my books. So far I've done American Historical, British Historical, Scottish, European (not British), Contemporary, Series/Serials, and a couple of others, including TBR. What I'd really like to do is separate my American into Westerns and others, and my Scottish into Highlands and others. But, that's a huge job. So, I figured I'd do this first, and then maybe later I'll further sub-categorize. When I organized them before, I did have a group for short stories and novellas.

It wasn't hard, but it's time consuming. I have over 2,000 books. But, I've been doing a little bit most days, and I have to say that I'm surprised by how much I've gotten done so far. I've divided each category into smaller groups by alphabet. My British ones are in groups A-G, H-P, and so on. I don't have as many American, so I only have two groups for that genre.

What does make it hard, is having to look up so many of the books to determine in which group they belong. Some are very easy, because from the title they are obviously western, highland, etc. But many are not, because the title is ambiguous. I've spent quite a bit of time on Amazon looking up books. LOL

BTW EB, I organized my books on my kindle. I'm not sure what you were referring to. I know Noreen and I spoke about organizing them here on GR. BTW where is Noreen?

OMG! ROTFL! I didn't even notice, Kate. But you are so right! It's really kinda creepy.

Oh funny thing about CBL. When I went to look it up on Amazon, for some reason I remembered the title as Taken By the Laird, which is by Margo Maguire. I read the blurb, which sounded pretty good, although it's a 1800's Highland romance, not medieval which is the usual. But then I got to the reviews. One I read said that the reviewer didn't like the fact that the H seduced the h without any intent of marrying her, even though he knew her to be a virgin. I was like, "what the heck kinda book is Kate recommending to me?" I then was so convinced that that couldn't be the book that you had recommended that I came back and scrolled through our discussions. Sure enough it was CBL. Weird though. Both titles are so close and they are written by authors with names that sound so closely alike.

I'm reading Her Lord and Protector right now. Just started. I'll let you know when I'm ready for CBL. Thanks. LORD is set in 1600's England. Talk about gothic. It's got the creepy mansion with closed curtains that no one opens and everything. BTW Kate, the h is mute! That was a freebie a while back, so I'm sure you have it. I'm only about 14% or so in and so far I'm liking it.

message 798: by kate (last edited Nov 24, 2014 01:46PM) (new)

kate | 203 comments I read that one awhile back.

I have to admit the book titles are starting to sound the same to me. To love a Duke. A Duke to love. Loving a Lost Duke. A Duke lost in Love. Yada, yada, yada. How many freakin' dukes were there. Though you can substitute rake, rogue or mistress in those titles.

Talk about the cover being a turn off. Not sure I want to visualize rat shifter in the big love scene. Yuck.

LOL I hear you. OMG! He really does have a rat-like face. It's horrible! I didn't get that one either, because the story doesn't sound like a romance. The H is married, has been for 16 years, and his wife hates him. I'm not really sure what the story is about. It a prequel to some series.

Which book did you read a while back? The one I'm reading now? I have to say, I'm really liking it. I'm just about halfway through now.

kate | 203 comments Yes. I read HER Lord and PROTECTOR.

I'm reading Why LORDS LOSE THEIR hearts by Manda Collins. New author for me. I won it from Goodreads and it's been sitting on my end table for a month. I can't believe I'm saying this but I prefer e books. Never would have thought. Not bad so far but I keep wanting to make the print larger. When I finish this I'm on to the book Elizabeth loaned me.
