Yes DTK is loanable. I never thought of it before, but the title is appropriate considering all the scraping of teeth when the two do kiss each other. LOL I wish they had given the H a better h in that book. One who is young and beautiful and who could have her pick of suitors. I think he deserved such a companion, not some over the hill widow with FIVE children. I'm bitter, I know. LOL

I hope FOG works for you. It's starts out with action right away. I know you're like me and like it when books do that. Because of that it may very well pull you in right away. The H is reluctant to have anything to do with the h in the beginning, for obvious reasons, but very quickly overcomes his reluctance.

I just got Till Next We Meet from the library. I had the title on hold and it just became available. I kind of excited to read it. I don't remember how I came across the title, but I do remember that someone recommended it to me...maybe Lark? Not sure. Anyhow, has any of you ladies read it and if so what's your take? I'm hoping to get done with ENTANGLEMENTS today.

I'm done with ENTANGLEMENT! I posted my review here on GR as well as on Amazon. I really enjoyed it; I gave it a 4 star review. Not only was it surprisingly good, but it was also well written and beautifully edited. I don't think I came across a single mistake! Can you believe that?!

I was all set to read TILL NEXT WE MEET, but I don't want to start a 350+ page book this late in the day. I've discovered that ENTANGLEMENTS is the second in a trilogy and I actually have book 2, which is a novella. It's only 99 pages, so I've decided to read that next. I have no idea where it's set, but it is another wartime romance. Although I don't think it's set in the actual war like book 2 was. We'll see. Sigh LOL It was on one of recent freebie lists...Unmask my Heart:.

Well good news! My new book, UNMASK is set during WWI, but it's in America, who we all know remained neutral throughout that war...would that we would make the same decision every time idiots decide to fight. Sigh Anyhow, the H was in Europe when the war started, but now he's back home. The book starts with him at home, so although this is book 3 in the LOVER'S GREAT WAR series, the actual war is occurring thousands of miles away. I like that!

I broke down and watched the last legion and did a little review for it but I really wanted to test the photo thing they have on Amazon and see what it did. So I posted it with an image from the movie and I like it. Now I have to tell you I had every intention of reading but then I wanted to apply for a couple jobs on line and well after that exhausting experience I slipped my movie in and well now I have to fix supper and cut Josh's hair. I know by then I'll feel like you RF and not want to begin a new book with some length to it. I'm going to check out your review. TTYL

Oh yes please, I would love that. Josh killed the clippers. Can you believe that? I had to cut at least 3 to 3 & 1/2 inches. He looks like a new kid. LMAO! Is your daughter watching Sleeping Beauty at 8 on the Family channel? You know it's sad that I have boys but I still watch them. I can remember watching them when I was younger. My life is really pathetic. Hahaha My night is planned out with a cartoon and my husband putting up the Christmas Tree. Yes you heard me! Wow! Christmas tree already?! That's super early! I will go ahead and send you DTK. If you want it, download it, otherwise it'll get sent back in a few days. I had to stop reading because I was getting a migraine. It came on so suddenly. I'm feeling a bit better now, but I won't read anymore tonight. I'm only twenty-five percent in. It's good. Set on America in 1914, a few months after World War One started. Sorry, there's no masquerade, but it's set in October though Halloween, I think. LOL

I always seem to fall in love with the mail-order bride books. I love the Western romances with hot cowboys that have seem tough but have hearts of gold. The Wolf and the Highlander sounds interesting. I love an author bold enough to just take a story where they feel it should go.

Hope you manage to get some sleep at some point, Kate. I'm up late a lot but manage to either sleep late or take a nap and catch up. I just seem to have trouble going to bed early and convincing my body that it isn't a nap. lol

I love mail-order bride romances too, Noreen! It's one of my favorite genres. Have you read Rancher Wants a Wife? It's a full_length mail-order bride romance. I read it a while back and loved it! I wrote a review for it on Amazon and copied and pasted it here on GR.

Hey Noreen, I think we three had the conversation re snaggles in our previous group, although EB seems to think you were in on the conversation. It's a really weird book about a twenty something year old baronet, who finds love with a older l, pauperized, widow with FIVE kids! He had a disfigurement of his face which resulted in his teeth being partially exposed. I can't remember the specifics. I read a few pages and then flipped through the rest of the book. I didn't like them as a couple. I wanted him to get a beautiful, young, virginal wife. He was wonderful and deserved it.

Noreen~ I liked Angus and his PVC non sense. Too funny. I also liked how they kept bugging the h to see if any women had responded. A bunch of horny - ass Scots trapped on an island with mostly men. That had me curious but I just think I'm better off staying in the past. I started Sleeping Beauty and laughed...what was I thinking? It's been several years and some how wasn't what I remembered. I think I had it tangled in my Cinderella memories. LOL! I have been reading Desire Unkknown from the freebie list.

I read Dare to kiss and loved it. I remember reading one or two Jo Beverly books that I wasn't crazy about so she isn't a go to author for me. Now I've already downloaded Seduction in Silk which is the story of the cousin in DTK.

The heroine Lily reminded me of a lot of the women in my family. Strong women that figured out how to work their way out of a jam. The age difference didn't bother me. My great grandmother lost her husband and 3 of her seven children back in the day during some epidemic. A year later she remarried. She was 40 he was 21. They were married 46 years. My mother was older then my father. My family is full of stories like that. So I bought the Lily character. I liked Ben too. To me his life was improved by meeting her. It was a win win. Gave it 5 stars which I hardly ever do especially with a novella.

If you gals like mail order you might want to look into that Bronyn Williams. It had a quirky h. Of course after DTK you might be questioning my judgement.

The Courtship of Izzy McCree was a pretty good mail order also. She arrives at the H house only to find out that the H never sent for her. It was his young teenage son who felt his younger siblings needed a mother. I read it a few years ago but I remember it had some twists and turns.

Well tonight I'm not babysitting so I'm going to take a sleeping pill. That should give me a good 6 or 7 hours. But what to read? It;s 11:30. To early to go to sleep but if I get involved with something I like I'll be up half the night. Maybe I'll check out the novellas on my tbr.

Hey Kate, I'm so happy you liked DARE TO KISS! I'm not questioning your judgement at all, because so far you've not steered me wrong in the book department. I'm not surprised you liked DTK. Jo Beverly is a pretty good author, and the story certainly had a good premise. I will freely admit that I am superficial--the big turn off for me in that story was all the damn kids! I prefer there be none, but if there has to be children, I prefer one, two at the most! I also prefer that it be the H who has children, not the h. See what I mean when I say superficial? LOL That being said, I've read lots of books with kids and loved them, so there you have it.

I will definitely check out the mail-order bride books you recommended. No doubt I'll be able to find at least a couple at my library. I hope you got a few hours sleep last night! You really should check out Entanglements. You might like it. Unfortunately, there are no maimed characters in the story, yet still...ROTFL

BTW I happen to be three years older than my husband. My kids think it's kinda funny, not sure why. I overheard my daughter and her best friend once, discussing the fact that both their mothers were old than their fathers. LOL In DTK I just thought they gave the h too much baggage. It's almost as if, having such a major disfigurement, the author thought the H couldn't get a woman with no issues, or at least less. I mean, widowed, older, FIVE kids, and poor? Was she even cute? I can't remember. Too much for me to handle. LOL

Ah, that would be the one my daughter has. The newer ones allow you to organize your books into collections. It's really something! Creating shelves here on GR is a great idea! I'll have to look into that. It may be easier than organizing on my kindle and once I'm done with the books all listed in their proper place, then I can quickly transfer to my device. Thanks to the idea, Noreen! LOL

I do think the DTK conversation was before your time, so don't worry! LOL I hope you're able to get your hands on a copy of RANCHER WANTS A BRIDE. I borrowed it from my library. As a matter of fact, I recently borrowed it for the second time and reread it--although not cover to cover.

One part I thought was kinda funny was where, right after they had consummated the marriage, he thinks that it was so good, for sure the marriage would be great; and she thinks, sure the sex was good, but there had to be more. ROTFL You'd think the fact that they had a history would make things easier between them, but it doesn't. It actually complicates things.

Kate, I got The Courtship of Izzy McCree from the library this morning, and I put The Mail-Order Brides on hold. Yay! Thanks for the recs!

Ruth Langan, the author of IZZY is the one who wrote that Highland romance I didn't particularly care for, Highland Barbarian. She writes extremely well, but that book took a horrible turn as far as I was concerned. The h was seventeen when she assumed the lairdship of her clan. We are told how well trained and prepared she's been for the position, but within minutes of her father's burial, she lets herself get pressured into marriage, and by the end of the book she gives up her position to her YOUNGER sister, who we are told doesn't have the leadership skills of the h, nor has she been prepared or trained to become laird. The h gives up her position so she can go live with the H in the Highlands, as he is laird of his people and can't possible abandon them. Ummm can you say double standard? As I wasn't the least bit impressed with the h's leadership skills or abilities, I thought for sure her clan was doomed when she handed over the reins to her sixteen year old sister. Sigh I hated that book. I did give it 3 1/2 stars, because there was a lot about it that was good, especially the author's writing style, but so much about it was just plain stupid!

OK, enough chit chat. Down to business. Here are a few freebies for today.

http://smile.amazon.com/Tempting-His-...

http://smile.amazon.com/Shadow-Time-B...

Be aware that SHADOW TIME is the first of a two part series. If you're interested, you'll either have to buy part 2 or hope Amazon offers it for free at some point in the not too distant future. LOL

http://smile.amazon.com/Robin-Legend-...

http://smile.amazon.com/Montana-Son-C...

http://smile.amazon.com/Welcome-Londo...

http://smile.amazon.com/Pillar-Fire-B...

http://smile.amazon.com/Clifton-Manor...

CLIFTON MANOR is an episodic book, as you see, but I thought I'd include it anyway so you can check it out as you wish. There is a note from the author in the book blurb regarding it's episodic nature. LOL

http://smile.amazon.com/Date-My-Stepm...

I wanted you all to see the stepmom erotic book, so you can get an idea of what I have to wade through in the HISTORICAL romance section. ROTFL

http://smile.amazon.com/King-Edward-L...

http://smile.amazon.com/Once-Upon-Out...

http://smile.amazon.com/Ripples-Shado...

http://smile.amazon.com/Fall-Grace-Gr...

http://smile.amazon.com/Kidnapped-Gra...

Umm I'm not sure what the heck GRACE'S FOLLY is about. It's says it's Victorian, erotic, and is a novella. Not exactly sure if it's a serial. I actually found book one further down in the search, so I included it. From the blurb for book one, it sounds more erotic than anything else. But, check it out for yourselves.

http://smile.amazon.com/Willow-Pond-C...

http://smile.amazon.com/Initiative-Re...

I've read INITIATIVE. There's not much to it. It was a cutish read. Cutish? Like the way I make up words? LOL

http://smile.amazon.com/Romance-Love-...

This last one is a real mystery. From the blurb the h and H are both married. Not sure where the story is going, but it does say that there is "no offensive content" included in the story. We'll see.

That's it for today, ladies. TTYL

Damn right, Noreen! I'm demanding a raise. The other day there were no less than a dozen of those flipping books to wade through. Today there were only about 4 or 5.

Initiative! I like that! I'll tell my husband when he gets home tonight. He needs to thank me for saving him from all those brainless bimbos! ROTFL He was actually really shy, or at least he seemed to be. We were staying in a lodge that belonged to the hospital where we both worked. When I moved in, I was given a list of all the rooms' phone numbers...when calling from within the building you only needed to have the room's 4 digit code, like in a hotel. So, one evening I decided to call him up. We were on the phone for like 4 hours! BTW he lived across the hall from me, literally! LOL

I dunno about Highland Barbarian, Noreen. I gave the damn thing 3 1/2 stars, but I think I was too generous. But, on the flip side, when I wrote my review there were 21 other reviews. All of which, except one, were 5 star reviews. The other review was a 4 star one. I thought there was something wrong with me, but I felt the way I felt, so I wrote my less than glowing review. Lark says I give higher star ratings, but then rip the books to shreds in my reviews! ROTFL Maybe she's right.

Anyhow, soon after I posted my review, another reader left a comment saying that she felt exactly the same way I did about the book. She didn't even finish it and after reading my review where I told how it ended, she was glad that she hadn't wasted anymore time on it. The ending was the last straw for me. How would we feel in the hero, a laird, gave up his clan to run off after a woman? What about loyalty and honor? Apparently all the training the h was given to prepare her to lead her people didn't include either of those qualities. There is no way it would have been acceptable for a man. In those days a leader had to sacrifice his own happiness for the good of his people. She didn't. IMO, all the author did was underscore the belief back then...women had no business being a leader of men!!! It was insulting. Ugh! After I had waded through that mess, for it to end that way was so damn disappointing. Although I don't know why, it was par for the course.

Oh and there are a few scenes with Mary, Queen of Scots. She was a total ditz. She actually thought it was a hoot that the H had abducted the h, and instead of helping the poor woman, insisted the h tell the story for the Queen and her ladies' entertainment. I wanted to smack the bimbo!

Men have to learn that they are not the only gender that can see something they want and go after it. lol I asked my husband out on our first date as well. Lucky man that he is. lol

The Barbarian sounds like it would tick me off as well. If the h was the leader of the clan, then the clan should come first...period. lol @ the ditzy queen...I guess you and EB agree on that one.

I have the same problem with reviews. I am learning to just look at the stars for what they actually mean. 3 stars is okay and 2 stars is you didn't like it. If I didn't like it I force myself to give it 2 stars or 1 if I hated it.

Ya, I hear you about the star rating. I too try to stick with that. There are few books that I hate, and when I do hate one, I can usually find some redeeming qualities about it. I gave HIGHLAND BARBARIAN 3 1/2 stars, but I probably should have given it 3...it was an OK read overall, but there was a lot I did not like about it. What was a true disappointment is that the author is clearly very talented. I really enjoyed her writing style, it's the story that I had a problem with. So many times, the opposite is true. Sometimes, a while after I've read and reviewed a book, when I think back I realize that my rating is probably too high. This is one of those instances. I mean, the main things I remember about the book are all negative, so it should probably get a 2 star rating. Sigh

My husband asked me out, but he definitely needed a push! So I shoved him. ROTFL

That's so true. If you wait for a man to take the initiative we'd never get anything done. My hubby is great; I"m a control freak and he doesn't mind being bossed around, so long as I'm respectful he does pretty much anything I ask. He does have a stubborn streak though, and every once in a while it rears its ugly head. LOL

OK Kate, I'm reading THE COURTSHIP OF IZZY MCCREE. OMG! I'm about 15% in and what a train wreck the Hero and his family are! The eldest said it exactly right, the hogs lived better than they did. And what was that with having to get fetch the preacher from a saloon and interrupt his--er--interlude with a fancy lady?! And when he performs the wedding ceremony he's drunk as a skunk! The whole town is a mess. And God love Izzy. She's a better woman that I am, 'cause I'd have hightailed it outta town so fast that first night! LOL And FOUR kids, Kate?! You know how I feel about children. Still it's rare that you find a mail-order bride book without at least one kid. LOL

kate | 203 comments I went to amazon and checked and I gave Highland Barbarian 2 stars. But as you said RF many people liked it. Th Queen thing was the final straw for me. But I hope you read it Noreen. Loved to get your opinion.

Well I read Izzy a few years ago and I remember thinking that she was probably what a mail order bride would have been like. Orphan, working in a bar so no decent man would want her and a slight handicap. She doesn't leave because she has no where to go and no money to get there.

Sorry about the kid thing I forgot. In the future I'll try to put a kid alert on my suggestions.

In The Mail-Order Brides no kids but one of the brides is a little bit pregnant when she arrives.

WTH is a "little bit pregnant"? ROTFL And I'm just yanking your chain about the kids. Like I said I've read tons of books with children and loved many of them. An in mail-order bride romances they are almost par for the course. Children is definitely not a pet peeve. Some of them are even charming. I did read one a while back, though, where I thought the kid was a spoilt brat...and he wasn't even the h or H's, he was the h's cousin. Oh, the H did have a daughter, who was a sweet little thing. Can't remember the name of the book now. Anyhow, I'm rambling, I know.

I actually wanted to read the other book first, but I had to waitlist it. Well good news! I just got an email from my library saying it was available for me to borrow now. Nice! I'm already 20% into IZZY, so I'm sticking with it. So far it's pretty good. But as soon as I'm done, I'll be on to the next one. As usual, Ms. Kate, you have messed up the order of my TBR list. Thanks! Haha

BTW you let loose a little spoiler info there, love it! So the h worked in a bar? Umm interesting. I did not know that. I do know, from one of the reviews I read, that she has some past that comes back to cause them trouble, but I had no clue what it was. Some man. I did peek at the end, of course, but it didn't give any clues. I only saw that useless piece of trash he was married to before showed up like so much flotsam washing up on shore. I can't believe he gave that heifer money! I'd have strung her up from the nearest tree!!! Anyhow, I realized the h must've had a very hard life. Unfortunately, I think that may have been the norm for women back then who chose to become mail-order brides.

kate | 203 comments Yeah, I can't imagine anyone signing up to be a mail order bride who had even a small option.

So you peeked. It was a big surprise for Izzy who was under the assumption he was a widower. She is so pissed at him and the kids she does leave him. I won't keep you in suspense. They work it out. And I agree I wouldn't have given the ex wife money either.

Speaking of jumping the TBR list. I was so impressed by that Jo Beverly novella that I went right to her Seduction in Silk. Boring. He didn't even have sex with her until she asked him--and they were already married a couple of days. It was supposed to be a marriage of convenience but really fella --get a clue. And that happened at the 52 percent part of the book. He left to go back to London the next day. It bares repeating. Boring.

Aw! I'm so sorry, Kate. Jo Beverly is definitely a hit or miss author. Sigh.

I, on the other hand am loving IZZY! I'm almost halfway done with the book already. I've been trying to ignore my family all afternoon so I can keep reading. LOL. They're all sleep now, so I'm gonna try to get in an hour or so before I hit the hay.
BTW did you get any sleep last night?

message 595: by kate (new)

kate | 203 comments Ok I can admit when I'm wrong. The first half of Seduction was dragging. But the second half picked up considerably. In fact I'll probably give it 4 stars though it might be closer to 3.5.***KID ALERT***This book does contain 12 year old twins. And yes they are boring. But I liked the ending. He learns to stand up to his father and she doesn't hold a grudge. Oh yeah and they save the country and figure out the family curse. So all's well.

I saw you review for DTK Elizabeth. I love it when I have no expectations with a book and then it turns out great. That happened to me with Pillars of the Earth. It was a gift from a friend and sat on my end table for months. Then when I picked it up I couldn't put it down. Usually it's the other way around.

I did get about 6 hours sleep last night. I took a sleeping pill. My drug of choice. Well among the legal ones anyway.

Glad your enjoying Izzy RF. My favorite time to read is when they all go to bed and the house is quiet.

I saw both your and EB's reviews for DTK. I'm glad you both enjoyed it so much. I freely admit that my reaction to the book could've been clouded by my mood at the time I was reading it, yet still, I think it will be a very long time before I try reading it again, if ever. Yes Kate, you are so right, it's an extremely pleasant surprise when you have no expectations, or low ones, of a book, only to find that it's a treasure!

I too loved PILLARS OF THE EARTH. My husband is actually the one who recommended it to me. He read it first and told me that her thought I might like it, and he was right...I loved it!

I'm glad you got some sleep last night, or should I say the night before now? Anyhow, I read until about 11:30 last night. I too love to read when it's nice and quite, but I just couldn't hang much later than that. I was starting to fall asleep while reading. LOL

I've past the part where Matt and Izzy have found their "sweetener", and are just embarking on a new phase of their marriage. I really love Aaron--the fifteen year old. He's awesome! I havent' checked as yet, but I'm thinking he's gotta have his own story somewhere. I mean, over six feet and muscular already? And he's only fifteen? And he's protective as hell towards his stepmama. Just the stuff that a good romance book hero is made of. If he doesn't have his story, Ms. Langan should be horse-tied and whipped for negligence. LOL Thanks for the rec, Kate. I'm really loving this book, kids and all.

BTW, what's up with the ALL CAPS KID ALERT? ROTFL I'm not THAT bad!!!! Well I'm off to check the freebies for today. TTYL

Here's a few freebies for today, ladies. I'm not sure how many there will be. It's been slim pickings the last few days. It will probably pick up as we get closer to Christmas--and I expect there will be a lot of Christmas titles. We've already seen a few.

http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Giles-Rook...

http://www.amazon.com/Spinster-Duke-L...

http://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Time-Boo...

http://www.amazon.com/Pirate-Hunters-...

http://www.amazon.com/Taming-Vikings-...

http://www.amazon.com/Bride-Prize-All...

Please note that in DUKE OF ST. GILES, there is no actauly duke. Well there is, but he's the h's father. The H is actually a commoner, who grew up in a bad section of London. He's known as the Duke of St. Ives for some reason. He sounds like he's some kind of criminal. LOL

However, I should point out that I've read a few of Ms. Eaton's books and she's horribly uneducated of the time period in which she chooses to set her stories, which quite frankly, is a bit insulting to her readers who appreciate accuracy...at least I find it insulting. She has some wonderfully unique idea, but they fall extremely flat in the execution.

In one book, the H's had to manage on his own because his servants couldn't make it in to work due to a snowstorm. When have you ever heard of a viscount's servants living elsewhere but in the servant's quarters of his home. And even if SOME lived in their own homes, there is no way that a nobleman would be left without a single servant overnight, unless he planned it that way.

I like her books, but they are annoying to read! I keep hoping she'll improve, but I honestly think she doesn't care. Why should she, when so many of her readers are blissfully ignorant, or tolerant of her obvious lack of knowledge of any historical detail. This book below is also one of hers, although that one is a novella. In THE DUKE AND THE SPINSTER, the H's father died when he was six, that makes him the new duke now, right? Well why is it that his mother threatened to disinherit him when he was twenty-two, and forced him to give up the h???? WTF?!! That is an example of the kind of stupidity that Eaton includes in her books! Inaccuracy I can overlook, stupidity, heck no! BTW I did write a review for DUKE. I gave it 2 stars, because by that point I was done with her obvious lack of knowledge, and her obvious lack of care!

Of course I include the books that I hate because, as we have seen with DARE TO KISS (although I didn't HATE that book) the ones I don't like another of you may love!

Please note that THE HEAVEN THAT IS HOME is a prequel novella to the author's book, An American Duchess. In the prequel we are introduced to the the H of the book that follows, and get an inside look at his history. It's set in the early 1900's, during WWI. There is no HEA in the novella; as a matter of fact, it sounds like he has a fickle fiancee who dumps him.

I'm not sure what the Viking one is about. The blurb is vague, and there are no reviews. Read at your own risk! LOL

That's it for today, ladies. You may have noticed that a few of the books listed are repeats from earlier lists. I figured I'd include them for anyone who may have missed them. TTYL

Kate~ Thanks for the heads up on Jo Beverly's book. That is so irritating when the author puts out vibes of an exciting read and than doesn't deliver. You would have thought he would consummate the marriage. Plus all the maids made reference in DTK that he was a insufferable flirt. Than you shouldn't have to be asked by your wife of all people to have sex with her. A flirt would seduce not wait for invitation especially with his wife. Wow that's disappointing.
