Discuss this story here!

Kandice | 4268 comments I've always just felt it was too sad. I usually skip it when I do a re-read, or a mini re-read (just a few of the stories) because it's a little too much. Maybe I should just go ahead and read it again.

Betsy Boo (betsyboo) | 195 comments It IS terribly sad. But it also reminds us to hold our loved ones close.

Tek | 97 comments It's sadness is why I love it so much. For a short story to get such an emotional response. I think I'm gonna reread this tonight.

I would not read this story again. It is very sad to me too. It just goes to show how life can go by so fast and you keep meaning to call your sister and never do. I love the comparison though between jumping off the ladder and jumping off the building. The sister believed someone was there to save her and that someone was death. Sad!

Did anyone else notice where the characters lived in their childhood?

Hemingford Home, Nebraska

That's where Mother Abagail was from.

And where Ben Hapscomb (sp?) lived as an adult.

LinBee Yeah, I noticed that one too. Yet another tie in!

Totally missed these tie ins! Thanks!

Liriope | 15 comments I love this story. It always makes me cry, it's so sad. Sometimes it's good to be reminded of such things though, so you remember to appreciate what you have and cherish it.
