"What?" Gavin asked with a frown.

"Don't think what?" Gavin asked, looking down at the floor.
"He wanted you safe. Tell me, what here is safe?" Gavin asked.
"What was Lucas like when he was young?" Gavin asked quietly. "What was he like before the Resistance hardened him?" H had to choke out the words.
Gavin grimaced. "He was so much tougher than that when I knew him."
"You'd be surprised at how strong he became," Gavin said quietly. "We were soldiers. You couldn't be soft and survive the things we saw. He was there when I lost my eye."

"He went through hell before the end, and I was unable to save him," Gavin said.
Gavin pulled Tyler into a hug.
Gavin stroked her back gently.
Gavin sighed heavily to himself.
"It's fine," Gavin reassured her. "It's perfectly fine."
Gavin clapped her on the shoulder and stepped back. He gave her a watery smile.
Gavin sighed and frowned. Tyler reminded him so much of Lucas. It was like Lucas was there and out of reach. In so many ways, Lucas's death had broken him, and now faced with caring for Lucas's sister, he worried he would fail his dead lover.
Gavin smiled slightly. "Would you like lunch somewhere? I know a couple places. Perhaps we could get to know each other, not just our relations with Lucas?" he asked. His voice was well-nigh trembling as he spoke. He didn't want to upset Tyler or disappoint Lucas's memory.
Gavin nodded. "Alright. Where would you like to go? Coffee shop? Restaurant?" He didn't suggest a club as he thought Tyler likely wouldn't enjoy it.
"The Coffee Break or Joe's Cup?" Gavin asked. He smiled at her. He wanted to do what was best for Tyler.
"Helpful," Gavin muttered with a chuckle. He got up and held out a hand to help Tyler to her feet.
"The Coffee Break it is," Gavin decided. He smiled half-heartedly and sighed.
Gavin had to look away from Tyler, unable to bear to be reminded of Lucas quite that much. He led Tyler towards the door.
Gavin still didn't look at her as he asked, "You ready to go then?" He forced a smile onto his face.
Gavin smiled slightly and led her out the door. He sighed as he stepped out into the sun.

Gavin blinked a couple times in order to adjust his eyes to the bright sunlight. "Right, let's go to the Coffee Break." He offered his arm to her as if he were some sort of official escort for her.
