Rachel The Frontiersman's Daughter-Laura Frantz 10-1-14
I really enjoyed this Christian historical coming-of-age/romance novel. It was well written, and most of the characters were well developed. It's another new favorite for sure.

Rachel When We Were Strangers by Pamela Schoenewaldt -Pamela Schoenwaldt 10-4-14
This was a fairly good novel about an Italian immigrant to the United States around 1882.

Dawn's Prelude (Song of Alaska, #1) by Tracie Peterson -Tracie Peterson 10-5-14
This was a really good historical suspenseful romance. I really loved the character building and the plot.

Love Finds You in Valentine, Nebraska by Irene Brand -Irene Brand 10-6-14
This was an interesting modern Christian romance. I really liked the characters, and the plot had a fun mystery element to it.

Night World, No. 1 (Night World, #1-3) by L.J. Smith -L.J.Smith 10-7-14
This was a fun fantasy volume of three YA novels. The plots were unique, and the characters were interesting.

October: 3/9 books

Reading "The Borderland" by Edwin Shrake - Love stories about the early days of the American West.

"In the bestselling tradition of Larry McMurtry, a sweeping novel that tells the tale of how mighty Texas was born--now available in paperback.] In this epic novel set in 1839, author Edwin Shrake, himself a Texan, presents a portrait of Texas as it was, a borderland between civilization and the unknown. There were fortunes to be made, vast areas of land to be gained, and battles to be fought and won. Skillfully woven into the action-filled narrative are true historical figures, wrenching love stories, and riveting battle scenes--all ingredients of superb historical fiction. Fans of Louis L'Amour and Patrick O'Brian will be enthralled by this Texas magnum opus."

Colleen Mertens | 63 comments So I just finished "Civil War Ghosts and Legends" as my spooky book. I liked it. It was a quick read of short stories. Some of the stories definitely held my attention more than others. It also got my kids curious from the title.

Rachel Blood of the Fold (Sword of Truth, #3) by Terry Goodkind -Terry Goodkind 10-14-14
This was a good fantasy novel. It is written well, and most of the characters are well developed and are interesting. The plot was exciting and full of surprises. This third one in the series didn't capture me as quickly as the first two did, however, which put it down to 3 stars.

Blessings by Anna Quindlen -Anna Quindlen 10-15-14
This was a well-written and entertaining novel. I really loved the characters, and the plot was sweet if a little sad at the end. A new favorite for sure.

Rachel A Clockwork Orange-Anthony Burgess 10-20-14
I could follow the plot, but I barely understood the dialogue, so it drove me nuts the whole time.

The Last Bride-Beverly Lewis 10-20-14
I really loved this novel. There were so many interesting things addressed during the course of the plot, and the characters were well drawn and interesting.

Out of My Mind-Sharon M. Draper 10-20-14
This was a brilliantly written novel about a nonverbal girl with cerebral palsy. Once I started it, I could barely put it down.

Moonlight on the Millpond-Lori Wick 10-21-14
I really enjoyed this series of historical Christian romance novels. They were well written, and the characters were brilliantly done. The only sad thing was that I wanted more stories about the people after the third one was over; the short epilogue just wasn't enough for me.

Just Above a Whisper-Lori Wick 10-22-14

Chuck | 98 comments Back from a short camping trip and finished reading:
"Playing for Pizza" by John Grisham and "The Time Keeper" by Mitch Albom.

Now reading "The Hellfire Club" by Peter Straub

"They are dying, one by one. Wealthy, middle-aged women in an exclusive Connecticut suburb. Their murderer remains at large. Nora Chancel, wife of publishing scion Davey Chancel, fears she may be next. After all, her past has branded her a victim . . . .

Then Davey tells Nora a surreal story about the Hellfire Club, where years before he met an obsessed fan of Chancel House's most successful book, Night Journey, a book that has a strange history of its own.

Suddenly terror engulfs Nora: She must defend herself against fantastic accusations even as a madman lies in wait. And when he springs, she will embark on a night journey that will put her victimhood to rest forever, dead or alive."

Colleen Mertens | 63 comments Well I finished up a few books that I haven't posted. "The Strong-Willed Child" was an interesting book but I knew many of the main points going in. Its section on ADHD was interesting since I didn't know much about that. I also read 2 Disney books that my daughter shared with me - Aurora the Perfect Party in which Sleeping Beauty plans a surprise party for her fairy godmothers. I also finished Rapunzel A Day to Remember which covered some of the other events that happened when Rapunzel was out of the tower for the first time. Both were cute books for kids.

Rachel Sweet Mercy by Ann Tatlock -Ann Tatlock 10-26-14
This was a well-written and interesting inspirational coming-of-age novel set during the Prohibition era. I really liked Eve's development as a character, especially her realizations that rule-following and perfectionism just doesn't cut it and that she can't "be good." There was no precise conversion, but it was easy to see her gradual spiritual growth into having a relationship with God. This is definitely another edition to my "favorites" shelf.

My Enemy's Cradle by Sara Young -Sara Young 10-27-14
I devoured this book; it was so hard to put down. It was well-written, and the characters were well drawn. I also learned a lot about the Nazi's maternity homes where genetically desirable women impregnated by German soldiers could be cared for until the delivery of their child, following which the child would eventually be adopted into a Nazi family. This is how a Jewish woman taking the place of her dead pregnant almost look-alike cousin manages to conceal herself until her ninth month of pregnancy; during this time, she falls in love with the father of her cousin's baby, and he helps her escape when people at the home discover her secret.

Accidentally Amish (Valley of Choice #1) by Olivia Newport -Olivia Newport 10-28-14
This was a fun and rather unique Amish novel. I really enjoyed the characters and the story. I look forward to reading more of the series.

Ya Yas in Bloom by Rebecca Wells -Rebecca Wells 10-30-14
This was a cute collection of vignettes from the lives of the original Ya-yas and their children and grandchildren over a span of many years. I liked it, but it wasn't as good as Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood.
