Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2320 comments From this request to add another edition.

Lady Barker is the name she was originally published as.

Thanks for any help.

We would only use Lady Barker if we did not have another name that included that last name but without the title to identify her by. But we do -- Mary Anne Barker.

I guess I'm not understanding the difference between this author & Mrs. Henry Wood

This is how Lady Barker was published. She is a very important figure in the history of NZ authors.

Also the second part of my question is whether I can use the image from the requester's blog. She includes a page showing the ISBN.

Emy (emypt) | 5037 comments That example is easy to explain on a basic level - She uses her title because Henry Wood would be her husband and therefore a completely different person. These names are often permitted as exceptions where using the title is necessary to differentiate a woman from her husband. Some editions may need to have both Mrs. Henry Wood AND Ellen Price or Ellen Wood on them to match covers.

Part of this problem, in my opinion, stems from the PD publishers, who don't often check names, and "dump" titles, turning Mrs. Henry Wood into Henry Wood. Using Mrs. Henry Wood allows us to bring those books onto the correct author's page under the More Complete Version rule.

In Wood's case, Wikipedia is quite clear that she is better known as Mrs Henry Wood. I'm a little puzzled (without researching more) as to why her bio shows Ellen Price Wood, since a) it's a US practice to incorporate maiden names in this way, and b) she seems to have moved on marriage from using Ellen Price to Mrs. Henry Wood or Ellen Wood (per DNB). I'll fix that.

lethe | 16359 comments But there is also Lord Byron, and in his case we have a ruling that Lord Byron may be used as the main/primary profile, in spite of what the PD publishers use as his name.

Another accepted example is Mrs. Oliphant.

If Lady Barker was known and published as Lady Barker in her lifetime, that should be the primary name IMO.

I agree. This squishy policy on author names is one of the reasons I've mostly stopped doing librarian edits. (Mostly, I haven't actually stopped.)

That is a good point, and a parallel construction. I am convinced.

lethe | 16359 comments Thanks, Elizabeth and rivka :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2320 comments Thanks everyone! I'll change the name on the author bio & add the book for this very patient member. I'm going to assume using the members blog is ok. :)

They are her own photos, so I would think yes :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2320 comments Sorry, another question. Do I have to add a second author Mary Anne Barker for editions that use that as her name?

Yes.

Thanks. On to it!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2320 comments This is going to be a project. I'll work on getting the names right over the next few days.

I suspect this might be a bigger project than just this one author, too...

Rivka, is this a general rule for all authors who published originally as Title+Surname?

I don't think I would go that far.

Elizabeth (Alaska) rivka wrote: "I don't think I would go that far."

That we don't have to add the complete name on editions where is was published that way? I thought that was always the way.

I was not saying that.

I was saying that keeping the version with the title might not apply in all such cases.

OK. Emy was replying to Carol's post about getting them all with the added name, so I felt I needed to verify.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2320 comments Should I start a "looking for a project" thread for Lady Barker.

I temptemped my heart out but was still having trouble yesterday getting Lady Mary Anne Barker to stick. & I have found various other forms of her name....*shudder.*

I'll plug away at this but it will take me some time.

It's sort of a 2-step process. You can add Mary Anne as the secondary author, exit, and then go in and edit that name which will then stick.

Thanks Elizabeth. I think I tried this. Maybe I just overloaded the system. I'll try again. :)
