Jay | 13 comments Looking for book read in the 1960s or 1970s, set in Scotland; modern young woman inherits a cottage in Scottish Highlands; she is haunted by the repeated appearances of a ghost [or is it a time loop? of a Highland soldier from the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745,fatally wounded in battle, who crashes through her french windows as if they were not there, and always dies, however hard she tried to save him. This haunting - or time loop - keeps happening over several weeks.
Then I think she falls in love with a man from her own world and time, and together [ really can't recall], they manage to exorcise the ghost and presumably live happily ever after.
Very atmospheric; thought it was Mary Stewart - it's her sort of thing - but seems not. Can anyone help me with this - would love to read it again! Thanks.

Jay | 13 comments No-one has yet commented on this book; I really do want to find it! I can't remember any other details except that the 'ghost'/time loop is dressed in full Highland regalia, ie tartan kilt sporran, sword etc.

I don't think it's this book, but there are a few similarities and the book is part of series, so maybe one of the author's other books?

Jay, no time travel, just a single ghost? No romance with the ghost?

What is the heroine's job/skills/hobbies? Where is her hometown/country?

Can you tell us more about her romantic interest and where they met?

Jay | 13 comments Goya, I'll have a look at the one you suggest, but I'm not sure it's the right one!It wasn't a series, I'm sure. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Kris, if only I could remember more, I'd put in the detail! I do think she has a romantic thing about the highlander, but it's impossible because a] he always dies and b] it was 300 years ago!

I can't remember anything about the girl except she is not Scottish and she is new to the area...and I don't think she has a job? Can't recall.
I know the chances are slim! But it was worth an ask. Thanks.

Jay | 13 comments Hi,

this is now SOLVED thanks to a suggestion from another 'find that book forum' - am I allowed to say that?!

Very grateful though for all the suggestions here.

Book was The Middle Window, by Elizabeth Goudge - recognised the title the moment it was suggested.
