Just finished this this morning! How convenient. My thoughts: Meh. I've read better. I know you probably see that 3 stars I've given it, but PSTTT, it's actually 2.5.
It felt like the author forgot there was supposed to be a climax and decided to add one in at the last moment. The plot overall was kind of forced.
The characters I didn't really enjoy.
You got...

Man... I seem to only be producing negative input. I should lower my rating. Such a shame, I was trying to be nice, but after reevaluating the story, it failed me. Changing my rating to 1.5/2 (on goodreads, since they don't allow half stars).
Will I read the next one?
If I have time, which is extremely unlikely since my list of books to read is about 10 post-it notes, front and back, long, and every time I got to the library, I always seem to pick books that are not on my list, so add another 5 post it notes, front and back, to that list to read.
Sorry for the rant.
Feel free to say this to me:

I wouldn't recommend reading the 2nd one if you didn't like the first one. I enjoyed the first one (kinda ignored all those dislikes because other parts made it better) but the 2nd book is even worse with all those categories you listed. Not worth it.

Nice to know! Thanks
I loved Shadow and Bone. It was such an interesting concept. I have to say I love the Darkling.
I got the chance to meet the author Leigh Bardugo at Dragon Con and she said that she got her idea when she was going to bed and in her imagination she saw a girl going towards a light and she stayed up all night and developed the idea. I just thought that was really cool.
Even though I really enjoyed the book I do not think that I will read the second one.

May I ask why you will not read the next book? It just strikes me as weird (no offense).
Whenever I love a book, I automatically search to see if there's another book/sequel
I enjoyed the whole series overall. I agree with pps that there were extremely annoying parts. I just wanted to strangle the main character. The last book was my favorite. I had a hard time getting through the second book.
I think the last book, Ruin and Rising, may have been the best! I think her writing improved a lot. I enjoyed all of the books.
I really enjoyed it. My favorite part was that I couldn't predict where the story was going. Busy reading the second book in the trilogy now.

I am so glad some one feels the same way I do!!! I was so disappointed in this book. I really like the idea of this book. The execution of it though.... Not so much. I think the only character I liked was Genya. Alina is worthless. I have no idea how she made it in the military. I own the second book and I will read it eventually. I want to see if there is a way the author can save this.
The last book makes the whole series worth it. Alina finally grows up and the characters step up to do what they need to band together to help those around them rather than just watching out for themselves.
It took me a week and a half to finish this book. I had to force myself to do it. I found Alina a weak character. It seemed she always relied on others. I would have figured if she were in the military she would have been a strong character. I didn't like the progression of her and Mal's relationship. The Darkling has me so confused I don't know anything. Over all just not impressed at all. I thought the premise of this book was great. I was really excited to read it. Loved the idea of the Unsea. Sorely disappointed. I own the second book so at some point I will read it. I am hoping that the author can salvage this trilogy for me. I am not keeping my hopes high though...

DARKLINA FOREVER
THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING

So, funny story...I went to Barnes and Noble with the intention of buying this entire series at once. However, I have this thing where I either have to have all the books in a series be hardcover or paperback. So I decided to go hardcover with this one. I found the 1st and the 3rd book but they were out of the second one. No worries, I'll just buy the two in hardcover and order the second one online, since I have a B&N membership and I'll get free 2-3 day shipping. So that's what I do. I ended up finishing the first book in one day. I patiently waited for the second one to show up....finally, a week and a half later, it says it has been delivered! So I go to check my mailbox (for the 100th time in a week) and I cannot find my mailbox key anywhere! I am currently in the process of trying to get a new key, which is harder than you'd think. But it's killing me knowing that the second book is just sitting in that stupid mail box and there's no way for me to get in there...I'm pretty sure it's fire proof as well. UGH!!!Anyway, I'm totally team Darkling. I like Mal and all but he spent too much time over looking Alina and not appreciating her the way she did him. There's just something really hot about the Darkling. I would think seeing as how Alina's country has really done nothing for her through out her whole life, she wouldn't really be too opposed to getting her hands on some sweet power. Even if it means being at the mercy of the Darkling. I guess it's a good thing I don't live in a fantasy world...(at least not outside of my own head)
