I am rather hoping Patti will be along in a minute to entice you all to read this.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Yuk! The 'product description' is mainly two long reviews. I heartily dislike that.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes, you do have to click 'see all product description to see the blurb. Let me save you the effort, Kath.

'My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse
Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things - eating ice cream, playing on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside. But ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at wherever they go.

Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?

Now featuring a brand-new chapter told by bully Julian, WONDER is a funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

August Pullman wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things. He eats ice cream. He plays on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside.

But Auggie is far from ordinary. Ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go.

Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?

Narrated by Auggie and the people are around him whose lives he touches forever, WONDER is an funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I noticed one of my students reading this. As she's a very reluctant reader yet was picking it up to read at every opportunity in class, I reckoned it had to be something special so I grabbed a copy.

It's a truly lovely and heartwarming book.

I'm looking forward to discussing it with those who choose to read it.

Feel free to take yours Patti for making this recommendation. Loved it!

I found August's viewpoint interesting but hearing the story from the perspective of the other main characters was fascinating.
I cried and cheered in turn and had I not had cramp from sitting so long would certainly have stood as the tale came to a close. WONDERFUL!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yay Sarah!

Yep, something special, isn't it?

message 13: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments It was the perfect feelgood read Patti!

I see there are a couple of spin offs, will have to investigate though I think the author will struggle to better this one.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I enjoyed the Julian chapter but I didn't bother with the other.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good. It won't take long to read.

Tammie Ward | 12 comments I read this book for my local book club and I was really not looking forward to it. I expected it to be a bit cheesy and I'm not usually keen on American books. However, I loved this book, it was really amazing, it was inspirational yet also down to earth. Happy reading guys.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments 22% and I could take him home! :)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Finished it last night. here's my review - I won't be putting it on the blog because it's not indie. But I've put it everywhere else!

If you're apologising for any spoilers, there, Patti, I've got my hand over the screen, so I've seen nothing. I've been following this thread with one eye half-open. I don't want a hint of how it all works out!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No spoilers, I promise! I was apologising for keeping you awake all night!

Oh cool! A most enjoyable night. Such an addictive book.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just got a Facebook message from a colleague.

Hi Patti, how are you doing? I have started reading Wonder.. it has made think of my own life.. will talk to you next week. Thank you for it:)

So pleased she's enjoying it as well!

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Point for discussion I'd like to raise, between spoiler tags:

(view spoiler)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh yeah! I can see how you might think it'd go in that direction!

Meant to ask a few days ago...

Do you lot think we should have a separate spoiler thread for Wonder?

If there's interest, I can sort out a few literacy circle discussion sessions.

We'll need to accept roles if it'll work.

message 38: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Actually I didn't, Natasha, although I did read the other book you mentioned. I thought it was a real strength of Wonder that it took other points of view.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes, the walking in other's moccasins was a strength, I feel too, Kath.

It managed to not be too saccharine, though. A very fine line to walk.

message 40: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Hmmm. I wonder what that says about me, then ...

Was that a yes to spoiler thread then, Kath?

message 43: by Natasha (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Cool.

Go ahead and open one, Natasha.
