Why do we read?

On publicbooks.org, Patricia Crain recently wrote a piece discussing the why this question keeps appearing across memoirs and bibliographies in a quasi-review of "My Life in Middlemarch", "Why I Read", and "The Shelf".
She proposes in the end that these books may suggest there is a darker, Freudian notion behind why we read and reread. Do you agree with these thoughts? What are the motivations for reading books like these and is her assertion correct? Just some food for thought.
