Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Greetings Space Opera Fans!

Our SERIES PICK for October is Book 5 of the Old Man's War series, The Human Division by John Scalzi.

The Human Division (Old Man's War, #5) by John Scalzi John Scalzi

"The people of Earth now know that the human Colonial Union has kept them ignorant of the dangerous universe around them. For generations the CU had defended humanity against hostile aliens, deliberately keeping Earth an ignorant backwater and a source of military recruits. Now the CU’s secrets are known to all. Other alien races have come on the scene and formed a new alliance—an alliance against the Colonial Union. And they’ve invited the people of Earth to join them. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy.

Against such possibilities, managing the survival of the Colonial Union won’t be easy, either. It will take diplomatic finesse, political cunning…and a brilliant “B Team,” centered on the resourceful Lieutenant Harry Wilson, that can be deployed to deal with the unpredictable and unexpected things the universe throws at you when you’re struggling to preserve the unity of the human race."

Sarah I'm in. I'm beginning to love Scalzi.

Sarah I didn't realize this is a book 5. I guess I won't be doing this one after all. :(

I believe Scalzi took a bit of a leap during the last book into YA-ish territory with Zoe, and this is a whole new cycle, so I think you'll be okay just starting cold.

Space Opera Fans ... anybody else read up this far in the series?

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 53 comments Sorry I am pretty new to space opera. Therefore I haven't commented much in this group because I have yet to read the fathers/mothers of the genre. However I'm hoping to read Old Man's War this month.

Also Anna I like you name "Borg Queen". Trekkie?

message 6: by Conal (new)

Conal (conalo) | 143 comments The Human Division are a series of stories set after the events in The Last Colony/Zoe's Tale. It is more a continuation of the previous four in the series rather than the start of a new one (have only read about half of this so far).

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 53 comments I saw an interview it was a little old when he was taking about the serials.

Ah-yup! Who couldn't love the Borg Queen in all of her kick-buttery? My favorite part were the battles between the Borg Queen and Captain Janeway.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 53 comments I lack knowledge of Voyager. But I'll keep that in mind as I watch through the series.

Star Trek: First Contact is still my favorite Star Trek movie. You know back when movies used to be smart:

Captain Jean-Luc Picard: And he piled upon the whale's white hump, the sum of all the rage and hate felt by his whole race. If his chest had been a cannon, he would have shot his heart upon it.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) I just like Star Trek ... in all of it's incarnations :-) Yeah ... I'm a geek...

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 53 comments not trying to be too off topic but Ive only seen the two new star trek movies and then Wrath of Khan.

Ahhh ... you must go on a Star Trek marathon, starting with TOS, then moving through TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise (and of course all the movies in between).

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I've been wanting to rewatch TNG and finally watch Enterprise.

Packi, I agree with you. First Contact is definitely the best movie.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 53 comments I've watched every tng episode except for some on 6th and 7th season. Ive just started Voyager and DS9. Rewatching Xena as well.
