It seems that JVJs efforts to do good and give alms to the poor, bring him nothing but trouble--near arrest by Javert. First, he called attention to himself when he regularly gave coins to the bum (really a cop undercover) that sat in the town square of the first place where he and Cosette lived bringing him to the attention of Javert. Next he tries to help the seeming "less fortunate" Jondrette's and is set upon by bandits and where he is nearly killed and when rescued, nearly caught again by Javert.Marius is horrible. I have nothing but contempt for him. He is an idiot, a bumbler and nincompoop.
The slide of the Thenardiers into such abject poverty from status of (I assume) middle class business owners is severe.
