*sigh* By the end of Part 3, Book 3, I was feeling like Marius was stepping into the story in a significant way. Now I am into Book 4 and I am feeling discouraged by the introduction of more unknown characters and more lengthy discourses on politics. I'm sure Hugo's commentary would be more interesting to me if I wasn't so woefully ignorant of all but the broadest outline of French history, but as it is, his efforts are wasted on me! Tonight I am actually tempted to just DNF because I am feeling frustrated with it, but instead I am going to just set it down for another day.

I'm sorry you are having a rough spot.
Finally finished Part 3. Did anyone else think it was an amazing and somewhat unbelievable coincidence the way that Jean ValJean and Thenardier and Javert all ended up in the same room? I was so happy to see our original characters back in the story again, and to see something start happening. I was starting to get back into it - then I started Part 4. :-( I don't know if I will keep trying, or if I will just surrender and DNF. This is the only time I have ever wished I had read the abridged version of a book!
I felt for Marius but I wanted to shake him up as Thenardier was obviously doing a very bad thing.. evil, in fact.. yet he was arguing whether to save the Thenardier.. how could his father ask him to save a murdere or a kidnapper or an abuser...? but I sympathise with him.. yet really want to shake him..
my heart still palpitates to think of the narrow escape of Jean Valjean fron Javert...
