Before I read GONE GIRL, I heard several people say that they were disappointed in the ending. If that was your feeling, how would you have preferred the book to end?

I would have prefered that Nick killed her or that she ended up on death row. A pregnant woman on death row? Now that's a thrilling ending!

I wanted them both to die at the end, they were both hateful characters who deserved each other.

I hated the ending, too! I was shocked, but I think that he should have left her. Baby or no baby. That woman was psycho and staying together would not helped the situation.

However, I did like that Nick said he felt sorry for her being her! But, she's not sane so it probably didn't hit her like a ton of bricks.

I loved the majority of this book. I thought it was fantastically written, extremely engaging, and had fascinating characterization. But I hated the ending. Hated it. There was no resolution to their problem, in any sense. They ended up right back where they started, which meant that the entire fiasco that happened throughout the novel was for nothing. That kills me.

They should have an car accident; Amy could have a broken spine, looses the child, while Nick comes from this with only a few bruises.

Absolutely love the posts I've read here. To address an alternate ending: There are so many good possibilities. Foremost, I would remove the unfortunate child from the home (unless G. Flynn plans a sequel, at which point things could get very interesting).

Recently, I've been re-thinking that the ending was fitting. Amy and Nick settle into a married life of pretending that everything is perfectly fine. They both are completely consumed with appearances and how things could be percieved by others. They are psychotically ruled by it. It makes you wonder how many marriages are really like that. People who are only pretending to be happily married. (minus the psychotic tendencies, of course) It seems like that was the upbringing that Amy had. Her parents pretended that they were a perfect family and that Amy was perfect...and when she often demonstrated that she wasn't, they simply made Amazing Amy perfect instead and turned a blind eye to the real Amy. Amy grew up to be exactly like them.

I liked the ending. In my opinion, it fit perfectly with the deep psychotic mood that the author weaved throughout the entire book. 2 psychotic people remaining together--the worse possible fate for the both of them. Although I respect Nick's desire to stay, for the baby. The way the 2 complete each other is sick in every way.

Usually, when reading a book, you find some character you like, some character you identify with and you like so you are able to read on and enjoy their presence. By the second and third parts of the book, I hated both characters. But it was a deep psychological thriller and that made me keep reading and getting so into it. I really think it was a great book, and the ending somehow still managed to leave me on a cliff-hanger, awaiting what would happen to the couple.I just wanted to keep reading..

I wanted the sister to kill her off. . . . but in a clever unsolvable way.

I think Amy should have stood trial for the murder of her first boyfriend (whose name I've forgotten).Would she get away with it or not? We will never know as it just didn't even feature realistically.
it was as if his murder didn't matter because he was obsessive. creepy etc. But as readers we were only presented with him through Amy's (and Nick's) distorted viewpoint.

I definitely wanted Nick to kill Amy. Preferably violently. I hated Amy so, so much. Nick's manuscript was very well titled.

No, I would've written her into a coma (Nick could've accomplished that, at least, right?), in which she gives birth to the baby, and then remains for the next 20 years or so. Then she wakes up old, ugly, and alone. A fitting punishment for someone like her.

i wanted Nick to kill her. I know thats bad, but the links Amy went through to make Nick's life hell were epic, the ending seemed like a bit of a let down.

This is a good question. I know that both were a--holes and I thought they deserved each each other, so I think I would have had Nick continue to write that book and Amy to have the baby and see how it pans out. Have a sequel on how the baby turns out! Poor thing-with two messed up parents!

I hated the ending but I can see why it was chosen. It's definitely a plausible outcome in real life. I wish it would have ended with her having the baby and then him divorcing her and taking the baby or him finally getting her locked up for what she did.

This may sound a little extreme, but I think a better ending would have been some sort of surprise death of Amy after she has the baby. Like, she is doing something shady again, crosses the street and is hit by a bus. And then Nick could potentially raise the child on his own, or maybe find a women who is so stable and uncrazy she evens out his need to lie and be a generally crappy partner.

I would have preferred the book to end by Nick not being a punk and deciding to stay with Amy just because of the baby. I feel as though he should've stood up to her and let him know his true feelings and either left her or separated for a while until she got her mind right.

Me - I hated the ending, loved the book. It did leave the door open for a sequel that could have a better
finalized ending.. I hope one comes.

I would have preferred the ending to eliminate her from the picture somehow. The way it ended seemed to diminish his manhood 100%. I was bitterly disappointed and I don't know if I will see the movie or not.
