Amber (puresurplus) | 53 comments I can never figure out (ahead of time) what the upcoming reading is for the group. Even after peeking at the bookshelf, no dice!

How and when do you ladies pick?
Am I just missing the announcement post?
Do you send out reminders via group message?

Help! Thanks ☺

Bryn (brynz) | 15 comments They usually announce it at the end of the video hangout, and it is posted on the group page shortly thereafter.

Amber (puresurplus) | 53 comments That was my fear. Confirmed that we never truly know ahead of time. It would be nice to have a bit more notice.

The problem is that if would announce it too early then some would read it right away while others would wait until the last week. It makes it a lot harder to have a discussion when half the people are talking about a book they read almost two months before. I know that some people have to wait for delivery or for holds at the library, but even if you do fall behind on a particular book, you can always (re)watch the hangout later, and the forums are always open.

Amber (puresurplus) | 53 comments I get the logistics of such a large group, but even a week before would be extremely helpful. Just my two cents!

Amber, I think I'll be trying to pick books ahead of time and we can put the next months' books in "Upcoming reads" a section lower in the group. Once I get organized I'll try to make this happen!

Thank you so much! I know that it's a HUGE pain.

Mel (booksandsundry) (booksandsundry) Thanks for this Felicia, it will help a lot for us in Australia given how long shipping takes for us with books.

Liangelus (goodreadscomliangelus) | 12 comments So true Mel. I just ordered Wicked As They Come and it's going to take 21-36 BUSINESS days to get here (and I wasn't going to pay an extra US$45 to get it here in 6 days or whatever it was...especially for a US$4.79 book!) So chances are it won't even be here before the next hangout...good job I have loads of others to entertain me in the meantime :D

Hannah Marae Maybe we can have a list of upcoming books so people can collect them but Felicia doesn't announce which one is next until the episode airs? That way people won't know which to read exactly (if they read them all and don't remember the books by the time the hangout starts I'd say it's their own fault xD)

The issue with that is that some people don't mind buying a book a month but it's a different sort of beast to buy several!

I guess I didn't think of that. >.< It is possible to buy used books for only a few dollars but everyone has a different scenario. This kind of thing makes me happy to use digital books. I don't have a bookstore in my town and shipping to Alaska can take awhile. :/

Oh yeahhh...Digital must be a life saver in your situation. It is for me too because I have a tiny apartment and books pile up. : )

Definitely that too! I do miss going to a bookstore and just wandering the shelves. :(

Yes. : (

There's one solution.

Become super wealthy and open a bookstore in the area.

I think these days it wouldn't fare so well. :/ Our old one was Waldenbooks and when those closed nothing else jumped in to take its place.

message 18: by Amber (new)

Amber (puresurplus) | 53 comments One way you can keep people from discussing books early is to freeze the topic for comment until the scheduled read date.

Oh I'm sorry! I was joking. To mimic the feeling, you can try doing a book exchange with friends. You guys decide which books you're willing to donate, put them all in a room, go through it and each pick one. But I hope you live near one one day!

Oh no, it's all chill. Haha. I can drive an hour to get to one so when if I want to but otherwise digital suits me. They take up no room and they're usually cheaper too!

PointyEars42 | 476 comments This might be an opportunity to get in a few longer novels or even a series. When we read that amazing Sara Creasy scifi (Song of Scarabaeus) way back when, it would have been great to have officially read both parts of the "duology", for example.

On the other hand, we can also get in the really short stuff too, but lots of it - like an entire story arc if we do a VF Comics month
Saga, Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan or Sex Criminals #1 Suzie Down in the Quiet by Matt Fraction .

That being said, I do actually prefer the big reveal at the end of the hangouts ... so maybe the advance announcements can be reserved for when the book selection calls for it?

I have lost hours clicking through Goodreads shelves and various "people who've read what you're reading have also read" lists. And Listopias. And rec/requests posts. And review sites. And retailer's sites. Its all "Want to Read" and "Add to Wishlist" and ClickClickBuy. Wandering around one book shop's inventory has been replaced by browsing through the entire internet.
