Purvi- Exactly..!! So many of them..! :'D
And I liked Eleanor's coolness and sarcasm, Park's utterly cute-ness, and the best of it, I loved it how they mould together and everything is just perrrrfecccttt! :D

True...but tell me ....what could she do ? She always feared one day he will dump her as she had so many insecurities. How could she take a stand when she wasn't sure herself . she didn't even believe she could be loved as that was what she faced all the time. Her father never wanted her. Her mother gave in to Richie. She had never felt the way she was feeling and it frightened her.

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Shin- All her insecurites were because of that family she belonged to. Even I was angry at times with her, for the fact that she didn't stand up to what was right whenever it came to Ritchie and her mom. But she was damaged. She had a dad who is so ridiculous and idiotic; she has nowhere to turn to even if she fights with Ritchie and leaves the place. She doesn't like burdening people with her problems, so there was no question that she could live with Park. Besides her mom and the kids were still her family and she couldn't just desert them.

And here Park.. Everything about Park was perfect. His family, his house- everything. She is bound to feel uncomfortable. Time and again she compares her life with that of Park, and it unsettles her. Like a huge breach between their lives, which seemed impossible to be filled up.

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments shiny I understand what you mean. But we have to consider the circumstances she faced when she took the decision. For she hadn't know who was writing in her books. She simply didn't want to accept that her step father can stoop to such lower degree moreover before now she had no place to stay. Where could she go and last time she tried fighting she was sent away from her home for a year and that life was no good than this. In fact that one year was what that changed her. She was not welcomed anywhere and I understand there are people who faces worse than what she did and yet they stand up for themselves but I must remind you even those who face such brutal measures in their life go through the same phase as Eleanor did. They don't just stand up for themselves from the start. They endure as well and maybe more than what she endured for they have their own set of fears and insecurities. They have their own shares of nightmares. And as for park how could you accept Eleanor to believe in him when he for a fleeting second thought she wrote those sick lines in her book herself. She had grown to trust him and she was really opening up to him but that was real low blow to say to your Girlfriend that she had written it herself and to what defending someone he once went out with ? How could one expect Eleanor to trust him. But still she did go to him because even after all that she knew he do care about her.

And we mustn't forget her siblings. she was not an adult so she could not be the legal guardian. She had no means to look after them, her mother was always taking that Morons side. Even when Eleanor called police. Wasn't that standing up for herself and her siblings. she had no one to back her up and thus it took her that long to leave.

For me she was the bravest one of her age.

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Oh Purvi, I couldn't believe what I was reading when Park said that. How could he? That was really sick!

Shin- I understand your point of view, Shin. Girls like us love characters (esp. women) who stand up for themselves. But she had no choice. For her, there wasn't a beautiful world away from that cursed household. What would happen if she fought with Ritchie for herself? She was kicked out of the house once for doing that.
And as far as trusting Park, Eleanor had never ever fallen for a guy, Park being her first. Everything was new to her, every rollercoaster ride, every jittery feeling, every insecurity about them. And that's all what a teenager can go through. There might be better examples of better people, but Eleanor is just a teen, and she was wired different.

Yeah ! That is why Park isn't my favorite character. In fact to be true I didn't like him either. In this one book I only liked two characters and that was Eleanor and Park's father. I didn't even like park's mother. She assessed Eleanor by the way she dressed. She started liking her when she found out she is from big poor family that reminded her of herself. The way I had seen others praise her mom I had expected her to welcome Eleanor whole heatedly the way his dad did.

I think she did absolutely correct..... I didn't like park taking some cat I think to prom ...he held her hand and kissed her. *shrugs* and he was "in " for ever with Eleanor lol. She took time...in fact I think she replied quite bit early. She was an insecure person. I admire her for the courage with which she send him that postcard.

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Purvi- Please don't hate Park so much na... :(
See Purvi, the thing here we tend to forget is these two people were teens. In this phase, there is a whole mountain of insecurities looming ahead. Park wrote everyday to her, because she was a part of him. It had become his everyday cup of tea to let Eleanor be the first thing in his world each day. Park had started dating that new girl, but do you think he gave up on Eleanor? Park had to undergo separation from Eleanor but to what result? He had to come back to the place which held so many memories for him. The bus, school, his house, the Impalla, the old school- whatever, wherever he could escape into, there was Eleanor. And then there he got nothing in return for his postcards. That was enough to make his insecurities get the better of him. So he took that chance with the prom.

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Abby- Eleanor was totally right at her place. I wouldn't have loved the story half as much if the book hadn't ended that way. She took time to get over her insecurities, and she realised no matter what she did, it will always be Eleanor and Park. 1 year might be long for other people, but for Eleanor, it wasn't. She needed time to think there was a possibility in the future of their hearts fluttering in the same beat. Someone like Eleanor coming back after a year, its got to be a big thing.

For us, it doesn't seem like much could change in a year, but for girls like Eleanor, trusting Park, believing in the fact that a world created by them could probably exist was a ginormous thing. And girls are like that in that age, believe me. Nothing might have changed in the one year, but the letting your heart decide over your head needs time, coz both run in the opposite directions.

Meera, you are forever welcome. I love all of you for reading E&P.. ^_^ :')
And yes, his dad was fun. :D

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Purvi- About Park's mom, I will tell one thing. Every person has flaws. Plus moms say everything unkind when they are in a fight with their kids. And Eleanor's dressing style was really weird. I mean, totally weird. If you didn't know her family background, or knew the kind of person she was, people would think in the same lines as Park did, the first time. She was not dressed like a pauper, she had some totally weird things around which made it look bizzare. And a beautician like Mindy would think all about Eleanor to be a total mismatch, because that's all she does in the garage- making people look good and she was the stark opposite of it. It might sound mean, but moms are like that. Nasty when they put up a fight.
She wasn't a perfect character maybe, but I loved her when she fought with Park's dad for letting Park wear the eyeliner syuff, or for letting Park drive the Impala. And also when she was grooming Eleanor. :P

No I don't accept that !!! He had said to her she was "it" for him. There will be no one after her... In fact their will be no after. And they never split. They never broke up. I know you think she took one long year but she was a girl whose own father abandoned her whose own mother used to say to her not to make things difficult for her and her family. She never for once thought or asked Eleanor how she felt. How could she trust someone with her life. She had been let down many times.. Her siblings who were her allies started calling that monster father. Agreed they had no choice and they kind of didn't know what a father is so they relented but her mother. She let that monster kick her out. How could Eleanor trust someone like park will keep loving her. Someone with a perfect family who didn't know how it was to not brush your teeth without a toothbrush ? For whom batteries didn't matter. How could someone like park ever love someone like Eleanor. That is what she kept thinking all the time. That is why it took one long year for her to try them.

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments As for not liking park.

There are times when one can decide a persons nature.

Though he loved Eleanor, he felt embarrassed at times. Yes he beat Steve for her... We truth to be told he beat Steve because she was his girlfriend.

He instead of consoling her went all horny after that gym fiasco.

He thought she had written those lines herself ? That was really really awful of him. Really!

I don't hate him...I just don't like him.

No I don't hate him he did have his moments where he made me smile... But his one comment ruined him for me. He was a good guy but he wasn't mature and that is he made mistakes.

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments Yes he started dating new girl. But why ? What a lame word this "dating" is. He could have just gone to prom as friends. He didn't need to hold her hand and kiss her. As we know he was the only one for Eleanor. Why he needed to date ....weren't they both mourning a loss. I know they are teenagers but still whatever.

As for park's mom..... I didn't like her because she judged Eleanor on her dressing not on her nature. Coming from a background similar hers she should have felt compassion towards Eleanor without Even knowing her background. She should have made her feel welcomed even if she didn't like her as her son's girlfriend.
But yes she was a nice person I will give that to her. And I adored that garage scene. :D

Because she had a step father too.... And same as Eleanor's.... That's why she changed...

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Yeah, Shin and Purvi, that's true. Everyone had their flaws. Maybe Rowell intended to show just that. :)
Tina was mean at first. So mean. But in the end, it was so nice to have seen the better side of them.

Added to what Purvi said, I think after Steve was hit by Park, both Tina and Steve, who considered themselves as Park's friends stopped bothering her. Park hitting Steve was a big thing, given he was not into fights and stuff. :)

Purvi- I agree, Park was unbelievable at places. Esp. About those sick lines in the book, and yes, about that feeling embarrased thingy. I still couldn't decipher why he could ever feel so, so maybe I will account it again to the fact that they were teens (as Meera said, without patience and wisdom) and because no one's pretty perfect in this world, and thus, not in the book too.
And their love was just growing, wasn't it? So it was the beginning of a different time of their lives. Even Park thought of Eleanor as an attention-seeking Redhead, but later he got angry when Steve called her something like that, right? He himself agrees that how much things had changed after Eleanor happened to him. :) So maybe Rowell wanted us to get that idea only.

No no... That isn't like Eleanor at All... You have to understand how Suddenly her world turned upside down. She wanted to give him space but in the end her heart won. Her sending the postcard proved that she couldn't stop thinking about him and now was totally ready to be with him

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments Abby- Don't be so harsh on Eleanor too... :'(
She was a reserved girl too. There are things which girls do. People think that's immaterial and useless and a waste of dear time. But its not. A girl like Eleanor who had never opened her heart to anyone had done that to Park.
An introvert like Eleanor had come to Park's house everyday, even if she felt it unsettling to come somewhere so perfect.
Park has been good to Eleanor and has done everything for Eleanor one would expect. He actually saved her life, not thinking of anything. But Eleanor is, as I already said, wired differently. She needed time. Time to come out of her shell. Time to realise that this was it. That's was why she never said those 3 words even if she felt it right to the core. Insecurities wreck your world, when you grow up like Eleanor.
And I know insecurities increase when you are not in contact. But with distance, love grows too, believe me.
When two people are destined to be, THEY WILL BE. No matter how many miles, how much time and how many stepdads come in between. Its always going to happen.

~~Poulomi Sylphrena Tonk$~~ | 1579 comments See Abby, a thousand things could have gone wrong. Eleanor could've never replied. She might have replied and said him to stop. Park could've never written. He could've written, and then one day when he got tired of not recieving anything in return and could've sent something that said he didn't want to continue. He could've moved on and got many more dates.
But nothing of the sort happened, did it? That is what happens when people in love are meant to be. You don't tire of waiting. Of hoping. No matter how seamless and worthless it might be.

We will empathize with each of them and if we would've been friends with them, we would've also suggested them to move on. But they wouldn't, no matter how much they want. Its a bond, an invisible bond that doesn't let you do something that you had already done in your head thousand times.

Love is kind, love is patient. Eleanor and Park proved that. Rowell meant to let her readers know that surely.
