Daniel K | 3 comments Looking for a fantasy book that may be YA as I read it when I was a youngster.

It was set in a world that everyone had a power (probably elemental) except for this boy who had none. The magic was used in everyday activities like building and smithing. He was shunned and his father who worked with earth magic? Had no use for him. However an accident or something happens caused by the boy who unleashes what I think was fire elemental magic. He is arrested and brought to a school and a familiar appears or a horse? That is bound to him.

I am sure he goes on to fight in a war and saves everyone by using his power to such an extreme that he dies.

I am almost certain this book is based in the same world as others by the same author any help would be appreciated thanks

Aerulan | 1316 comments I'm guessing this is something in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series. Give me a minute to look up titles for the book.

Ok maybe Brightly Burning though the description doesn't match exactly, it's the one I thought of reading your post. And it's worth checking the other books if that's not it. It really does sound like one of that series but there are a bunch of them and a bunch of anthologies/short stories so it might take some investigating to rule them all in or out.
