After I watched the series I went back and read this part. Overall, I have to say Ron Moore, the director, followed the book pretty close. I thought it was interesting when the Mackenzie's was teaching Claire to fight they used Willie to show how to shove a knife in the back. In the book it was Murtag. Also in the book they got a piece of lambs wool and leather to simulate striking a knife in someone's back. After reflection I thought although I would have liked to see that part, I don't think if was necessary to the story line.
I am not happy with the last few episodes,we have been lucky to see Jamie for 10 min. except for the wedding ep.I am sick of Frank and Black Jack who Clair spends a hay of a lot more time with than Jamie. And I`m sorry, I watch the show for Jamie .When it comes back it can`t help but be all Black Jack all the time again .I watched every rerun I could of all the others except the flogging but haven`t even bothered to watch this one again
This one was tough to watch again because of the two attempted rapes of Claire. Ron put the segments in about Frank for two reasons (according to a Variety interview). First, he thought viewers would be interested in what Frank was doing after Claire's disappearance. Second, the new stones segment was to emphasize how Claire is still very conflicted even while she's growing closer to Jamie and her feelings deepening.
I actually loved this segment because it was rich with symbolism. Claire is an emotional roller coaster of emotions. She's being seduced mentally (and physically) by her new husband, watches the clan fight off an assault, is almost raped in front of her husband, has to kill a man, hears her first husband calling out to her, is captured to face Black Jack Randall, strategizes her way out of certain torture only to overplay her hand and then prepares to be raped and mutilated by this sicko.
Ron created a visual smorgasbord that mesmerized me. I've decided to not look for literal translations of the book and revel in the creative essence of the series. He's actually heightened my awareness of the significant aspects of Claire's emotional transformation from a woman desperate to get back to her husband to one who ultimately chooses to stay in the 18th century with her new one. It's working for me as I loved the book for its historical elements, mystery and literary feel, as well as the romance.
Kathy Anne wrote: "I am not happy with the last few episodes,we have been lucky to see Jamie for 10 min. except for the wedding ep.I am sick of Frank and Black Jack who Clair spends a hay of a lot more time with than..."I agree I would have loved to seen more of Jamie, but even in the book you really didn't see that much of Jamie, until after they were married. Next season, I really expect to see a lot more of him.
This ep. pretty much bored me so much I still haven`t watched a rerun of it.I never even think about or care about what the book does or doesn`t say because the screen writers mix up a whole bunch of stuff and hope we all get it,and I do, they do a very fine job and it still sounds like Outlander to me so I am happy with them,my only complaint is a severe lack of Jamie for me to drool over.I think I always tend to focus completely on a male lead in both books and screen so I think that is my biggest problem here when I don`t get to see him-he is so fine !
I am betting you will see a lot more of him next season. Frankly, the first time I read the book I wasn't crazy about this part. It was only after they got married, and as you said, you see a lot more of Jamie that I loved it.
I just checked the Starz menu again I thought they might have a rerun of one of the ep. but there isn`t one on again tonight.I think I checked every day this week and didn`t see one.Has anyone heard if there will be any reruns this next 6 mo.?
I have not heard of any reruns. I know you can get it on Demand. Either that or perhaps Net Flix. I know I have also looked for reruns.
thanks Jonetta. I know my sister wants to get it on Netflix, when it comes out. she is starting to read Outlander for the first time now. In fact, I just gave her my copy. I hope she appreciates it and really reads it. Then yesterday I was talking to my friend because we are doing a buddy read. The bad part was I wasn't able to go back and look for excerpts
No I haven't but I sooo agree with it. I love how Jamie will protect Claire with his life if necessary. Christian Grey will just throw money, not nearly as sexy! And I love Jaime's accent.

In the meantime Jamie and Claire are getting close. Overall, this portion of the show stayed pretty close to the book. I loved how it ended with Claire almost getting raped by Black Jack Randall and Jamie in the window with an unloaded pistol saying "I want you to take your hands off my wife."
Personally, I loved the show and it makes me mad that I have to wait until April to watch the next part.
