Love triangle or not?

SincerelyMC *Spoilers*

After reading the Infinite Sea and having myself blown away by the new Ringer/Razor relationship, I kept wondering about Ben. Does anyone else think he likes Cassie? Or do you think she'll always be with Evan? Basically, do you think there was a love triangle between Cassie/Evan/Ben, and who do you think Cassie will end up with ultimately?

Suzy I never for a second while reading the book saw a trace of Cassie's previous feelings for Ben. I think that ship has sailed for her, and obviously Ben didn't even know her before. I thought it was pretty clear she likes Evan. I was afraid it would turn into a love triangle but I'm SO glad it didn't go that direction.

As for the whole Ringer/Ben/Razor situation (I think if there is going to be a love triangle this is probably the most likely trio)it depends on if Razor is dead or not. I kinda hope Ringer and Ben do reconnect because I didn't really like Razor all that much. He just seemed kind of random, I didn't find it believable that Ringer fell for him that fast and easily.

message 3: by Donita (new) - added it

Donita Yes. I i agree with Suzy. Obviously, Cassie has fallen for Evan, HARD. And Ringer/Ben/Razor is the closest thing to a love triangle in the story(If Razor is still alive).

Ben and ringer kinda click though. The way Ben say her name and everything.

I don't mind EVAN/CASSIE/BEN love triangle though, as long as Cassie will still end up with Evan Walker.

Ruthanne evan and cassie, and ringer and razor. I hate (for some reason or another)the idea of ringer and ben together, but at the same time, evan and cassie are perfection. and I like ben just all alone....why? I don't know

I loved ringer and razor together, but at the same time I do think there was something there between ringer and ben.

Samira Remal Well pretty sure Razor is dead :/ Anywho, I've said this before, If Ben didn't want Cassie in High School when then world hadn't gone to shit, he can't have her now! EVAN + CASSIE! They are so adorable together, she acts like herself around him and I mean he is actually human so all works out! <3 and let's not forget the holister abs and how he still found her with like 16 broken bones and 3rd degree burns, that's true love!

Nova J. NAW Cassie loves Evan too much to even consider Ben anymore. Lets not kid ourselves here.

Aasha Ramlal Evan and Cassie
Ben and Ringer
I refuse to accept anything else. Besides, I'm about 93% sure Razor is dead, anyway, and for some strange reason I'm ok with that. He seemed kind of random.

Jackie I was really sad about Razor being shot in the dead and I thought that Ringer's and Razor's little story was to bring out the sensitive side for Ringer after her ordeal and changing if the author killed off Razor. Otherwise, he would be part of their group. I'm still confuse about the whole aliens are actually human part because it is reallly farfecthed but it must be the truth.

I don't see Ben and Ringer together, but even though Cassie has her moments, she is entirely absorbed and in love with Evan and he with her.

Ben needs to get his priorities in order.

Ally Am I the only one who ships Ben and Cassie?

SincerelyMC Ally wrote: "Am I the only one who ships Ben and Cassie?"
Nope. I ship them too. I just like them both as characters better. I feel like either Evan or Ben is going to die in the final book, and that Cassie will end up with the one that's not dead.

Diana Braxton Suzy wrote: "I never for a second while reading the book saw a trace of Cassie's previous feelings for Ben. I think that ship has sailed for her, and obviously Ben didn't even know her before. I thought it was ..."

Really? You didn't like Ringer/Razor? I absolutely loved them together!

message 12: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura Rocha I was thinking that I was the only one in the world (quoting Casiopea here) shipping Ben and Cassie (because Im pretty sure Evan dies at the end) and Ringer and Razor (because Im praying for Alex wont be dead)
Ps. Sorry for my grammar I'm learning english.

message 13: by Bkd (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bkd Ben and Cassie are bros.

I feel like if Evan died (which he probably will) and Ringer does too (which I'm hoping she does) then they'll end up together. Not in like, the Happily-Ever-After-I-Love-You-To-My-Toes kind of way, but in a sort of 'we've been through the same stuff and I know who you really are' way.

I like Razor, random as he was. Agree that it's unbelievable that Ringer (whose supposed to be an emotionally superior bad ass) would have fallen for him so fast but I still wish he hadn't of died. He's got a distinct personality, y'know? The others (with the exception of Ben) all sort of blend together. Razor was a smartass with a big mouth.

message 14: by Lina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lina I think we can all agree that Ringer's sudden love for Razor was very, well, sudden.
However I REALLLY do hope he is still alive because if not she'll just end up with Ben (I think but who knows) and I don't really see a romantic connection between the two. Plus, I like the randomness in his actions, which contradict Ringer's logical sense of mind.

Lizzy I love Cassie and Evan and Ben, but I couldn't connect with Ringer. She seems too cold and distant. I don't dislike her or anything, but I don't care much for her. She is a great character, though. I respect and admire her and I think that if she should be with anyone, that person should be Razor. But he shot Teacup, and might've even killed. I, as a reader, understand why he did it, but I don't really care much about her, so maybe that's why I'm not mad or upset or anything. But Ringer's another matter. I seriously have no idea how she'll react. I like them because balance each other out and I like their relationship. Maybe it was a little sudden, but they all have the possibility of dying each day. And I think it's kind of understandable that they develop feeling fast once they start to trust others. The only thing is that I think she started to trust him a little too fast.

And all of that is exactly what I think about Cassie and Evan's relationship, except for the trusting part. It took Cassie forever to really really trust him. And I like Cassie and Evan together. But I also like Ben and Cassie's moments. I loved it when Ben told her that the Others made a big mistake by not killing her first. And then he kissed her (even though it was only a peck) and I got confused because it was in the mouth. He could've as well kiss her cheek but he didn't, and then I remembered the kiss he have her at the end of the first book. But I don't recall Ben saying that or even hinting that he liked Cassie. If anything, I was pretty sure was starting to like or care for Ringer.

So I don't understand Ben. But I never wanted him with Ringer. I don't like them together but I had accepted the fact that they probably do so wouldn't be upset or disappointed if they ended up together anyway.

message 16: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Anderson I honestly don't think so. I feel like Ringer likes Ben as a friend, and nothing more. I don't think Ringer would get over Razor so easily and go straight to Ben. Ringer doesn't seem like the type that would.
And I do agree, Razor was random, but I liked him. As stated above, he does have a distinct personality. He can be a loud mouth, and can say some pretty random stuff, but he can get serious quickly.
I truly hope Evan dies soon. He's getting on my nerve, for so many reasons. He should've died a LONG time ago. He doesn't make sense, the stuff he says is hardly believable. Yet somehow is true.
I don't like how Cassie is around him, either. She becomes a love sick puppy. I liked her in the very beginning of "The Fifth Wave" without Evan, but now I don't really like her as much.
If Cassie had to be with anyone, I would like her to be with Ben. Though, I don't really know.
I thought there would be a love triangle between Callie, Ben, and Evan. Now I don't think so. I don't think there would be a love triangle at all, unless Razor lived. If he did, then there MAY be one. But I don't think Ringer is the type to leave two boys hanging like that.

Taylor As much as I like Evan, I want cassie to be with Ben so badly !!! I'm not too fond of Ringer, I don't know what it is about her, but I sooooooo want cassie and Ben to be canon.

Maria Rick Yancey tweeted a few months back that The Last Star will have - rather than a love triangle - a "love pentagram" so I'm assuming:

Evan <---> Cassie <---> Ben <---> Ringer <---> Razor

I'm hoping for Ringer/Razor and Cassie/Evan although I do agree that Cassie was a more likeable character before Evan. Evan survived as he is in the last chapter and maybe Razor isn't actually dead? I think Ben is most likely to die in The Last Star.

message 21: by Ammi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ammi I reallyyy like Razor and Ringer together. At the beginning, I didnt like ringer with ben because i wanted him to get with cassie. I finally noticed him and cassie probably werent gonna end up together but i couldnt get over the fact that i didnt like him and ringer together. When razor came, i totally loved him. I REALLY hope he isnt dead because although they fell in live quickly, it was still nice to witness. I hope what you said about the love pentagram is real!!! ^

Camila like Ringer herself said, Ben is the stereotypical jock that believes the world is a gift to him.
i really hope Cassie has grown out of her high school love, i mean the girl has been through hell ad back...
and i dont know Evan seems nice and the man literally crawled his way back to her because of a promise!
TWICE!

Elizabeth Meyer I think she will ultimately end up with Evan because he is caring, safe to be around(for cassie at least) and overall protective.

message 24: by Taylor (new) - added it

Taylor I *hope* it's Evan. Ben is lovely 'n' all, but I don't think she really loves him, at least not in that way.

Danielle Ally wrote: "Am I the only one who ships Ben and Cassie?"

I'm so with Real Rad Reads and Ally (and anyone who ships Ben and Cassie). I've shipped Ben and Cassie since the beginning - EVAN IS SO CREEPY! (plus he read her diary... WHAT??!! YOU DON'T DO THAT)

I feel really bad for Ringer though... Her and Ben were kinda cute in the first book, but naw... If Razor had lived things would have worked out perfectly... But I think she'll find someone in the last book. I don't want her to die (she's one of my favourite characters), but if that's what it comes to for Ben and Cassie to be together... Well, I'm a bit dramatic, okay, but I'm desperate here.

I hate triangles, but there wouldn't be one if we just got rid of Evan! :D So simple... If only...
I think the best thing I can hope for is that it's sorta like the Hunger Games ending... Either one (hopefully Evan) dies/leaves, and then it's all like 20 YEARS LATER, and Cassie and Ben are together.

message 26: by Ncsassenach87 (new)

Ncsassenach87 I really feel that you have to look at the development and the characters. The focus by the end of the second book seems to be that this is a whole new world, and Cassie and Ben are whole new characters. There was no connection before; the only one now is that they are friends and fellow survivors/soldiers. I would be shocked and find it wholly unbelievable if out of nowhere, the author fabricates a romantic connection between the platonic Ben-Cassie relationship. I would be seriously disappointed in that development, as well as any development that leaves them together in some twenty-years-in-the-future world where they were together simply because they were the only ones left and had shared experiences. My hope is that the series stays away from love triangles. Honestly, I think just having one romantic relationship (between Evan and Cassie) would be plenty. It would also be entirely refreshing. I respect and love this series so far because it is more "mature" and existential than other YA novels. I hope that doesn't change.
Finally, a theme of this novel is hope. My hope is that things work out for humanity and all our beloved characters, and because I am a sap, that Evan and Cassie both live and get to have a future (after some suspenseful moments, of course:) Keep up the good work, Yancey, and don't give into stereotypical love-triangle and angsty-tragic romance because other series (i.e. Divergent and Hunger Games) have done it. Please.

Marcy I never expected a Razor/Ringer relationship to come up and most unexpextedly, I liked it so much than I did with Ben and Ringer. Yes, maybe there is nothing very special about Razor but I like his character very very much and I ship him for Ringer. I like how he was the one thats been on Ringer's side during her weakest moments and just tried to genuinely lift her up and gave her hope. Though it was later found out that Vosch set it all up, everything he said to Ringer about himself had never been lies (no matter how much he tried to be indifferent about the whole thing at the end) and Ringer believes the same thing.

I can understand why Ringer fell for Razor. Its with Razor that she has been more open, allowed herself to be weak and let her guard down. And no matter how special her friendship with Ben is, their relationship just never reached the same level. Ringer and Razor's had been close and personal. And mind blowing.

No, I ship them too in the 5th wave but in the infinite sea I didn't see anything between them so I think shipping them it's like shipping something which is impossible. I think Cassie likes Ben a lot when she was in high School but then Evan appears, and Ringer, and that's it.
I feel kind of sad because although I like the character of Evan ,his relationship with Cassie don't convinced me in the end. I mean he was a stalker ,he shot her and he lied to her .I don't know to me it's not very realistic this kind of love, but who knows. But I prefer Cassie with Ben even though there's no chance for this two to end together :(

message 37: by Thamyris (new)

Thamyris Doria I just finished The Infinite Sea, and I think that Razor and Ringer's relationship is so random! I never for a second while reading the book felt that she liked liked him. In my opinion, she was just happy to have someone to talk to and to make her company, since she was away from her group and feeling kind of sensitive for everything that she was going through. The whole thing wasn't believable to me, specially the sex part. How could she fall for him in such a short period of time? Anyway, for me, all of that happened because she was kind of lonely.

Besides that, I feel that Ringer has some strong feelings for Ben, and she struggles with that because she loves him as a friend but kind of hates him at the same time for his attitude ("Stereotypical jock that believes the world is a gift to him"). It's like she doesn't want to fall for him, but I think he affects her, a lot. In several parts of the book she says that she has to come back for HIM, specially him, and not the entire group, so... Yeah. I'm pretty sure they are becoming a thing.

It's also pretty clear that he feels the same way about her. In The Infinite Sea, they spend almost the entire book away from each other, so they don't have romantic "scenes", but when she's going away and Ben says that she wants to kiss him, I think that in fact HE wanted to do that, but it seems that she really intimitades him, and maybe he's afraid that she doesn't feel the same way. Also, he worries about her in a different way, and all of that thing with wanting to make her smile at any cost... I'm sensing a little bit of love.

I don't think Cassie likes Ben anymore, it's obvious that she's totally in love with Evan. I know Ben and Cassie kissed a few times, but I don't think it really meant anything, for both of them. I feel he just kind of did that, like Ben Parish normally would, but he doesn't like her.

I really hope that Rick Yancey doesn't try to develop a romantic relantionship between Cassie and Ben. I just can't imagine them together, even though she had a little crush for him before. They have no chemistry! Ben should end up with Ringer, and Cassie with Evan. I don't want any of them to die!

message 38: by Priya (new)

Priya When the heck did Ben and Cassie kiss? My god! What have I missed? But honestly love the fact that the humans are about to die in this book, but our main concern as readers (myself included) is who Cassie will be with. I love that (im weird...) And gotta say I ship ben and Cassie, cause Evan just gives me the creeps and maybe I want him for myself ;)

Laura✧˚ · . Andy why Ben kissed Cassie twice? I mean if he had no feelings for her why kiss her? It makes no sense to me, I won't kiss a person who I don't like it.

message 40: by Heather._. (new)

Heather._. i do believe there's a love triangle but ive always loved ben and cassie and i think it would be cute for cassie to keep her high school crush or love and in the second book you start to see ben fall for her and in time i think they would be a cute couple and i think evan will die because he just to complicated and creepy
so i think in the third book evan will sacrifice him self for cassie and in time when everything starts to go normal ben will marry cassie and ringer will be the god mother for their children and end up alone. soz if that sound sad haha gotcha razor will come back from the dead and end up with ringer but they won't have children.

If Cassie doesn't end up with Ben that that's fine. I'm not really a huge fan of her.

Although, I ship Ringer and Razor A LOT

message 43: by Riley (new)

Riley I feel like everyone on her ships Evan and Cassie more because of the fact that Ben didn't "want" Cassie before the Others came, or that he didn't know her.

I know others have their own reasons for wanting Evan and Cassie and that's cool.

But, Ben did know Cassie.
They didn't portray this in The Fifth Wave, the book, but in the movie when Cassie and Ben were both separately trying to rescue Sam they both knew each other.
Ben literally said "Cassie? I'm Ben Parish, we went to High School together!"
He also at the end knew about "Cassiopeia" and what she was named after.
I know the book is different then the movie but still, it may not have been said in the book, but they did know that each other existed.
Also, I don't like Evan, I mean how do we know that the Others aren't using him...
(Yes, I know that last thing was a little farfetched and ridiculous.)

Tara Warren Im a late bloomer, honestly I didn't know about the series until my son begged me to get the movie. Hook, line and sinker I'm in! Caught up on the books and in the countdown phase until the 24th!!!! That being said I really wish I would hav know about it before now so sorry guys. I probably shouldn't throw my thoughts out there because I am a late bloomer and only jumped on the bandwagon because of the movie but I just can't help it!! Sooo . . . Here it goes maybe Ringer is the last star. 2 things could come of this, one she leads them to Evan (as planned) or Ringer being Ringer she tracks down the remaining silencers. She really isn't all that unpredictable she is just smarter and doesn't hesitate to pull the trigger. I'm not surprised she fell for Razor at all, I did think it would be Ben though. we don't know what's going on she could be dreaming for all we know. Either way, I can appreciate characters like her she is everything we try to be when we are having a bad day. Moving on, we touched on Ben so let's run with it . . . As much as it sucks to even imagine that world without him I fear he will die. I'm struggling not to sound too much like a sissy but the thought makes me want to cry. If he doesn't die, Evan will. Then entrust the safety of Cassie AND Sam to Ben. Poundcake went out like a champ!!! John Rambo style had Rambo actually died that is.
You never know, all of our predictions could be off. Has anyone touched on the idea of Cassie dying? Maybe I don't know but what I do know is I have already preordered my copy of The Last Star

message 49: by Dani (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dani So, my opinion on all of these love triangles and such is a) I really need to get a twitter account. B) I really liked Ben and Ringer together for the very fact everyone is saying NAH: they're FRIENDS. Ahhhh there it is. The truth. They had more connections and there relationship was eased into. I'm a firm believer that Ringer wouldn't just fall for any guy. She didn't for Ben, but maybe Razor is her true love. However like I said it isn't Ringer's personality to fall for someone and quickly the fact she doesn't smile anymore is the same reason being Ringer, is she should of clamped up and totally distrust and ignore Razor. I mean he betrayed her! You know she wouldn't take that crap from Ben, and she's complaining that he thinks the world's gift is Ben! Bull! I personally love Ben better than Razor as a character. And the whole thing on him and her having sex at the end. I felt that was forced. Its only been for months and he BETRAYED her. Is she that blind because of love? And people think Cassie is a love sick puppy... Don't gt me wrong, I like Ringer as a character but tbh that was way too much point of view for her. She was too repetitive and closed off which I get but obviously not closed off to have sex. Idk that's some of the things that irked me and bothered. C) CASSIE AND EVAN ARE MEANT TO BE. Enough said...
