I finished this over the weekend. I thought the character development was strong. Initially I liked Charlotte sections better than Raney's but as the book moved forward I ended up enjoying both sections equally. I thought the use of the two stories was an interesting author's tool to integrate the two women's lives. Spoiler alert, spoiler alert -
I had a really hard time with the ending, it was NO surprise that Bo and Eric were the same person and I just found the ending to hookie or wrapped up the two lives. I was glad that Jake wouldn't be alone or left to David who just seemed like a potential pedophile or someone of equally strange tendencies. (even Raney being with him seemed odd or beyond lonely).
I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on the book.
I just finished this book and didn't find the paternity chimera part very believable. What a weird ending. I was frustrated how Raney and Bo kept missing each other through life. I'm still not even sure who ran over Raney. Was it David? If you hit a deer at night would you jump out and grab ahold of a wild animal? That seemed strange. Also, what was that bit about Raney finding a nautical lawyer's card when Cleet was killed? She didn't get any money from him throwing himself overboard did she?

I thought the wild animal was a cover story, regardless if we are both confused I would say it wasn't clear (at best).
In terms of the lawyers card, again implication, I thought that people gave the card to her so that she could sue but she didn't because she knew he killed himself. Again a bit implied but that's how I took it.
Also I agree that the paternity chimera was weird and non-believable.
