Mortals and Monsters. Quests and Adventures . . .
There are Heroes - and then there are Greek Heroes.

Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils, or outwitted scheming vengeful gods, quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes.

In this companion to his bestselling Mythos, Stephen Fry brilliantly retells these dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales. Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera.

Filled with white-knuckle chases and battles, impossible puzzles and riddles, acts of base cowardice and real bravery, not to mention murders and selfless sacrifices, Heroes is the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best.

Sans Stephen's footnotes and his phrasing are killing me. I'm actually sad my commute is now only 8 minutes by train, I have less time to read before work now!

I wanted to major in Classics when I went to uni, but after two years I had no idea how that was going to get me a job. I still remember good chunks of what I learned but reading both the modern-reader-friendly versions of these myths and seeing proof of the deep research he did is breathing new life into my decades long obsession with Ancient Greece.

Sans While reading the recounting of Perseus meeting the three Grey Women and learning how to swing a sword backwards to kill Medusa, all I could think about was Eddie Izzard's bit on them in their Live from Wembley show.

Sans Not sure if I'm on my own here or if my co-reader will join me, but I'll keep plugging along I guess?

Sarah/group mods, that ok or should I not bother?

Sans If no one else is here, I'll put this back on my TBR. I've got a bunch of stuff to get through for October's challenge.
