Haowei Wang To Kill the Mockingbird book review
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those books that almost everyone reads at some point in their lives. Whether you've been forced to read it at school, or you've had a look because everyone's been urging you to, most people have their own personal experience of reading Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee tells of Scout and Jem's childhood in Alabama and how a series of events shook their innocence, shaped their character and taught them about human nature. Lee examines racism and other prejudices through a page turning story told in a wonderful, Southern voice. This is a must read American classic. The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it。
To Kill a Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior - to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos

Tara Thank you google.

Pam I consider this one of the best and most important books of the 20th century forward. I completely agree with Haowei's account above. Couldn't have said it any better. Please get your children to read this book whenever you feel they are mature enough to grasp the truths is relates.

John Bohnert I've enjoyed the movie of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. It is one of my very favorite movies. I'm a senior citizen and I finally decided that I should read the book. I'm very glad that I did. As they often say, "The book is better than the movie".
I'm now reading other 20th Century classic American novels such as THE GRAPES OF WRATH and EAST OF EDEN. I loved both books.

S. K. Pentecost I don't know if she would have found it complimentary, but we named our new puppy, Harper.

I hadn't read Mockingbird since high school, until this spring (when we adopted the puppy) and I have to say that the first half of the book may be the best storytelling of the 20th century.

By the way, Harper the puppy is the smartest, sweetest dog I may ever have owned.

Pam I feel (almost) as strongly about Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth. Does anyone have any comments about the book?

Carrie I have the Good Earth on my to read list. TKAMB is a 5 star book for me. I think it's very appropriate for young kids to read, the younger the better before they are shaped by society.
SK -just curious, what breed of dog is Harper? I like the name, btw. I know a cat named Boo Radley:)

Brenda Nickle My daughter wanted to read TKAM when she was 13. It has always been a favorite book of mine; I re read it every few years and each time find a new reflection I had missed before. Anyway, I knew my daughter had technical skills to read it, but not life skills to get the layered messages, so we spent the summer reading and discussing it together. I had no idea what that meant to her till years later when she wrote about that experience in one of her college application essays. It still resonates with both of us, in funny ways and in serious ways.

Hi Brenda,

Interestingly, my son is now 13 and asked me why Harper Lee came up with such a title for the book. He thought it was literally implying the killing of a mockingbird. As we sat down together reading portions of the book, I explained the message of To Kill A Mockingbird, in terms of human behavior and relations. It's one of my all-time favorites, containing allegorical content, a balance between good versus bad, and extraordinary characterization.
