Gwhizz Does anyone else feel that Sorscha has been poorly added into the story? It feels like she has been made up just for this book and has only been added as an afterthought.
The other characters in the previous books felt more planned and structured whereas Sorscha just feels like a convenient yet pointless character. How convenient that she was with them all along but because she was just a healer nobody noticed her until now. How convenient that she knows everything going on and how convenient that she has always been in love with the prince!
I did still love this book but I was disappointed in the way Maas added that character in. She could have been introduced as a new healer that took a liking to Dorian and became sympathetic etc.
Any thoughts?

Anji Cooper I didn't like Sorscha from the beginning and then when she said she'd been in love with Dorian I was just like, oh, no, yup don't like you. Also I didn't like their relationship together, it was really annoying me. Sorry for any of you who like Sorscha but I was really happy when she... died?

Steph I totally agree. I especically didn't like the fact that she suddenly became Dorian's love interest.

Believe me, was I happy when she died. Sorscha was simply a contrast to most of the characters of this book - strong-willed and determined.I mean, even Dorian himself had a slight backbone. She was just expendable and weak.

How was it possible that Dorian's tastes altered that drastically? In Throne of Glass, he was in love with a dauntless, badass assassin. How on earth does that escalate to loving a kind, but meek and docile healer?

Quite frankly, I feel as if Sarah just placed her in to mess with my heart. (DORIAENA <3 EVEN MORE COMPATIBLE AS KING AND QUEEN NOW) But even if I didn't ship Dorian and Calaena, there was no way I was going to adore Sorscha and Dorian. Even she, herself, admitted that she was no Queen.

She was just a catalyst for Dorian to turn against his father, I'm sure you'll agree. I just wished that she wasn't so.... vexing.

Gwhizz Yeah, I wasn't too bothered about her being dead although I did feel sorry for Dorian as he can't seem to catch a break plus the way she was killed was brutal!

I agree with you Steph, she was definitely put in there for Dorian to finally out his magic and his stance to his father. It was rather creepy though as the King seems to have known all along?

I get the feeling that Dorian is not the king's actual son but maybe he belonged to a family with magic and the king took him in?

He sounds nothing like the rest of his family, both in looks and personality. But then that doesn't explain why he can still use his magic.

Yes, thanks to Maas for she killing Sorscha off, but PLEASE don't introduce another character like that in the next book!

Your theory sounds totally rational, though I doubt the King of Adarlan (HOW IS IT POSSIBLE WE STILL DON'T KNOW HIM NAME???) would be this sympthetic. Though, Georgina Havilliard sounds like the exception, but from what I've heard.. he greatly resembles her.

I hope that doesn't happen. I don't think that I could stand another main character being not who she/he is XD.

Still, Dorian irritated me slightly. His "me and Sorscha equals true love" was not convincing. All she did was help him with his magic, honestly! I mean, using Calaena as an example (CUZ WE DON'T SEE HIM WITH ANY OTHER GIRLS) there were actually obstacles in their relationship. The King, his position as prince and Calaena an assassin, fear of her losing the competition for the King's champion... it was much more convincing that he had true feelings for her than a healer that really didn't face any obstacles to be with him.

Rachel For my English class I had to create a eulogy for a deceased character in the last book we read and I did it for Sorcha from Dorian's POV. I just felt awkward writing it. Sorcha seemed to be thrown in there to keep Dorian busy. I felt as if I sould write:
Sorcha, I'm not exactly sure how I fell in love with you but I did. The readers didn't really seem to care that you died. You didn't really help the book at all but whateves I'm not the author here. Maybe you'll make more sense in the next book.

message 7: by Jen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jen Yeah, her role in the story got annoying pretty quickly. She also got killed off in the book so there's no room for development which kinda sucks. The romance was also unnecessary. I just feel bad for Dorian!

message 8: by Steph (new)

Steph I definitely felt bad for Dorian. Give him a break, for god's sake!

Anum Steph wrote: "I definitely felt bad for Dorian. Give him a break, for god's sake!"

I agree...he was loyal to everyone...i dnt get why nobody likes Dorian!

message 10: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara I love Dorian! I just think he deserves someone less anger driven than Celeana. Chaol's personality meshes better with her, in my opinion.

message 11: by Steph (new)

Steph I agree. But at the same time - having read all the novellas and books.. for me, Calaena's anger is really more of a weakness than a trait. I mean, take Sam Cortland for example of the men Calaena is attracted to, for me, he resembles Dorian more.

Alice (Booksandfreshlybrewedtea) I actually liked Sorcha, I think she was a great person for Dorian, they were compatible, i think it makes sense for her to just pop up because Dorian didn't acknowledge anything that wasn't celeana , magic so much going on so why would he remember a healer girl? a nobody really! so when he had no body (him and Chaol not on the best terms) it makes sense to why he noticed her!
i wasn't sad that she died though, i was sad about Dorian and how it had effected him and how he's lost yet another girl he loved but i actually started crying when chaol said he loved dorian! ahhhhh the bromance may be reborn yet! :D

I dont want Celeana to end up with chaol though, i actually think she would be better with dorian in some respects but i just feel that him and celeana are just in the friend-zone for now! ahhhhhhhhhh!

Nicole Hardman I was okay with Sorcha and even a little happy when she was killed but I fell bad for Dorian because its another loss he has to deal with (and more secerts from her)

message 14: by Allie (last edited Oct 25, 2014 07:58PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Allie I couldn't stand Sorcha and her death was one of my favorite parts of this book. I love Dorian and I'm glad he won't end up with her. I wish her character wasn't around for this book, because Dorian could have had a much more interesting role in HOF. I wanted to get some insight on him, but all he did was flirt with Sorcha the whole time. It was frustrating.

message 15: by Noah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Noah Czerny Yeah, I don't really feel like Sorscha fit very well, but my heart broke into a million pieces when she died. (Mainly for Adrian.) HOW COULD YOU WISH FOR HER DEATH OMG.

message 16: by Steph (new)

Steph I agree with Allie. What with Dorian knowing about Calaena's identity and all that... I'd have expected more of Dorian-action instead of flirting with some healer and trying to control his magic.

Audrey I really like her from the beginning until the end. I was so excited for the hole love triangle to be resolved when she came into the picture. But hen the end of the book. NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lauren I thought Sorcha was so cute with Dorian until she died. I was glad that Dorian and Sorcha were happy and I was happy. I really want Rowan to be with Celaena!

message 19: by Addy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Addy I felt that it was kind of sudden to add her in and make Dorian fall in love with her . i got annoyed when she came up casue she wasn't as strong as a character as I would have wanted. i kind wish Maas didnt kill her and made her a secret assissen being mentored by Celeans old mentor how cool would that be!!!!!!!!! like she is on her knees about to be killed when she kills the guard and does some par core and leaves the castle only to return in the next book threatening dorians life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah Sorcha was kinda pointless

AbigailDenyse01 I really don't(didn't) like her.

Kelly Sorscha? Really did not like her throughout the story. Her character was so poorly added in the story. Once she was with Dorian... I knew there was going to be trouble coming his way. He deserves better. Plus Sorscha was just a drop back for him and everyone else.
Literally she caused everything to crumble for Aedion, Dorian and Chaol. If she did not admit that she was the spy everything would have been planned. But I guess she is the story twister to the story. Perhaps in the next installment Celaena will find Chaol. Save Aedion and Dorian. Who knows?
I am so excited to read it either way knowing or not.
Seriously did not like Sorscha.

Lindsay Katz I happened to really like Sorscha, buuuut I'll make a post about that for another time. I saw a tumblr post talking about the healer in TAB and how she slightly resembled Sorscha with the hazel eyes and where she was from. Could this have any relevance later on? I feel like maybe me and the person who thought of this theory are the only two who thought of this but I cant stop thinking about it now!

Lauren I feel like Sorscha was added in to the story perfectly. I felt pretty sad about how she SPOILER ALERT

Died

Monifa I think Sorscha was added well to the story because she helped shape Dorian's character for the future books and will probably influence the decisions he makes (if he ever SPOILER ALERT frees himself from the king's power)

Lauren YES!

Lindsay Katz @Monifa I feel like you're right!! That's what I was kind of thinking too!!

(Spoilers if you haven't read it or finished) :) I really hated Sorscha! Dorian in this book irritated me until the end and I was so dang happy when she died! I was reading through any and all parts involving her and Dorian so fast just to get over with it. I almost skipped them but I knew I couldn't shirk the book or myself. I feel she was slid in the story well enough but I feel she fell from the effing sky and landed in Dorian's bed just to warm it for him since kick butt assassin kicked his butt and left him for dead. Yes I feel he isn't good enough for Celeana (probably spelled that wrong) but I feel it's WORSE if he's with anybody but her. I haven't taken partial with him but the ending shows that he is going to become a very good, likeable character for me. And again..Sorscha can go die in a hole..oh wait..the one time I was on the King's side...yep~

Saloni I didn't hate Sorscha, though I do feel that she could have used some more character development. And I definitely didn't predict her end. I thought she was going to play some role in the later books, but the fact that she didn't was a disappointment. I've accepted that Celaena and Dorian are probably not going to end up together, which is a major disappointment so for once I liked seeing him happy, and the fact that she's dead, I think, is going to serve as a spur of action, somewhat analogous to Nehemia's death for Celaena... if he can get out of the king's control. Sorscha deserved more time to prove herself, but maybe she's more important dead than she is alive?

Lindsay Katz I totally agree with you Saloni!! I feel like Sarah Wouldn't put a character like Sorscha in there if she weren't going to serve a bigger purpose later on.

Saloni Lindsay wrote: "I totally agree with you Saloni!! I feel like Sarah Wouldn't put a character like Sorscha in there if she weren't going to serve a bigger purpose later on."

Definitely! I just need the next book afghdgkljs

Lindsay Katz Ugh same omg higxstjkhh

Saloni Lindsay wrote: "Ugh same omg higxstjkhh"

There's no precise release date right? Just a general "2015"

Lindsay Katz I believe it's September 10, 2015

Saloni Lindsay wrote: "I believe it's September 10, 2015"

Wow thats far....

Lindsay Katz I know!! I'm dying not knowing what happens but thankfully it's not coming out in December or something farther.

yeahh me too, when she said that she loved Dorian and Dorian started to like her it was just...nononononono. and all my fellings of OLD SYDRIAN CAME BACK.

so i was kind of happy when she died, because i din't like her and Dorian together. and i dont think that he was actually in love with her, maybe he loved her but not in love with her.
then i was kind of sad for Dorian......

Jayda From the beginning I honestly hated her guts (BTW I ship Celorian) and when the guard had her at swards point I was screaming in my head "DO IT NOW!!!!!!"

message 40: by Emma (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emma *SPOILER*

I kinda was happy when she died because to me, it didn't really feel like a relationship, but more like Dorian was just sort of desperate to be in a relationship. Overall, it wasn't that meaningful and as soon as we were introduced to Sorscha, I knew that she would die, and it would hurt Dorian again.

message 41: by Ann (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ann (CAUTION: CONTAINS SOME MAJOR SPOILERS)

I liked Sorcha, I really did, but at the end, I didn't cry when she died because I felt like she was vague enough as it was and there were very few details that we knew about her. I don't ship Celorian (I'm both on Team Celaena &/or Team New Guy to Come Later In the Series), but I felt worse for Dorian than I did for Sorcha, if I'm being honest. If she wanted us to cry, she should've pulled a Nehemia on us and killed her in the next book while we're getting to know her as a character.

IT happens that way. Once you get your heart broken, you go for the opposite type of person. That's usually the way things are

message 44: by Dara (new)

Dara Wang I didn't like Sorcha much, either. At first I thought she may be a good ally for Dorian to have, but when their relationship um, progressed, I instantly went like, oh no you don't! Dorian is way out of your league. I felt nothing when she died but do sympathize with Dorian. The dude has way too many heartbreaks already.

message 45: by Randomschoolgirl (new)

Randomschoolgirl I couldn't quite accept her and I wasn't really at all remorse when she died, it was like yeah she died, and then i moved on. The only healer for me is Yren Towers!!!

message 46: by Dara (new)

Dara Wang Me too. Yrene should be playing some major roles in upcoming novels!

message 47: by Liz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Liz I have a theory that Dorian and Yrene are going to end up together. She's like the perfect mix between Celaena and Sorscha.

Yalda Lauren wrote: "I thought Sorcha was so cute with Dorian until she died. I was glad that Dorian and Sorcha were happy and I was happy. I really want Rowan to be with Celaena!"

i cant believe i just read this... SORCHA DIES??? good

Kiana Hated her. She was sorta cool when I found out she was a spy ok so she had SOME backbone but damn Dorian was way out of her league. I don't think he ever truly loved her, he'd always drift back to thoughts of Celaena whenever they were together. I really do hope that, in the end, Dorian and Celaena happen just like how it was supposed to be in the first book, just this time as KING AND QUEEN OF THE CONTINENT AAAAAH

Katrina♡•• Hated her and was happy when she died
