Still on my memoir kick. This one by an African journalist who was born in exile… the daughter of South African freedom fighters… is a poetic, beautifully crafted story of wandering, longing and self exploration. Msimang grew up in Zambia, Kenya Canada… essentially everywhere but South Africa because her father was part of the ANC’s revolutionary armed wing fighting against apartheid… she ultimately returned to South Africa as an adult only to marry a white man… and feel so dislocated… she decides to move to Australia. This is a beautiful book by an incredible story teller who transports you to places and feelings… and makes you ask the biggest question… where is really home…
