I like how Mr. Weasley takes Uncle Vernon to task for the way he treats Harry.

I continue to love the twins. Ten Ton Tongue. Lol.

It's awesome to finally meet Charlie and Bill.

terpkristin Well, you do meet Charlie, briefly, in the first book, but yeah, I agree.

I thought it was just his friends.. But I guess I'm wrong.

The world cup is great. The movie really butchers this part, including removing a bunch of clues about Barty Crouch Jr.

And I like how she introduces port keys with a practical reason so you're all set for when the Triwizard cup is turned into one.

terpkristin You're right, it's his friends they physically meet. But they interact with him/you get to see a glimpse into him, is what I meant (and said badly hahahah).

Agreed about the movie. Actually, in all, I think the movie for this book was the weakest. Though I didn't like the final book's movie, either.

I like all the movies, but this might be my least favorite because it's my favorite book and they cut so much.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments The Quidditch World Cup is awesome. And, yeah, love reading that scene knowing that Winky is up there in the box with Crouch, Jr.

Gotta love the twins. They need guinea pigs and they know Dudley is an ass so he's the perfect person, so great. So nice that Harry gets this extended family who all really love him since he doesn't have his own to rely on

Dara (cmdrdara) The movie for this one absolutely flies through the plot. It's kind of unreal.

Finished this part but my notes are at work. Will post tomorrow.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Yeah, sad to say I'm like way ahead of the reread but I still love seeing everyone's insights and chipping in where I can.

The worst part of the movie is the first task, I hate it. Harry is so clever and sneaky with it in the book, and they make it into this total Hollywood chase scene including him losing his broom and sliding down the castle. Weaksauce of the highest order

Wherever that is hosted doesn't seem to be working for me.

Suzanne | 1582 comments That is too cute! When this one first came out, my young daughter, sister-in-law and I rented a hotel room right by the store where we had pre-ordered the book. We picked it up at midnight and went to the hotel (about 10 minutes from our actual homes, mind you) and read all night long. Reading it in a tree might be even better.

OK now its working. Was this a staged picture, or did you find it a comfortable way to read?

Suzanne | 1582 comments It looks like you were either almost done or sneaking a peek at the ending.

Dara (cmdrdara) Ch. 1
-First chapter has interesting information about the Riddles. Also kind of creepy.

-Hello, Wormtail. Volemort is giving him one more task that any other follower would give their “right hands” for. Way to foreshadow, Jo.

-Voldemort kills a woman named Bertha Jorkins.

Ch. 2
-Harry's imagined advice from Hermione to go straight to Dumbledore about his scar isn't bad advice. He hears about it anyway from Sirius.

-I tend to skip over the “Previously on...” recap paragraphs.

-This book takes place in 1994-95. In Harry's letter to Sirius, Harry says that Dudley chucks his Playstation out of the window. The Playstation wasn't released in Europe until September 1995.

Ch. 3
-Harry's friends really have no clue how bad it is at the Dursleys for him.

-All of those stamps! So damn charming.

-''Harry frowned. He thought it was a bit rich of Uncle Vernon to call anyone 'dumpy,' when his own son, Dudley, had achieved what he'd been threatening to do since the age of three, and become wider than he was tall.'' That line gets me every time. So funny.

-Woo! World Cup!

Ch. 4
-For once, I side with the Dursleys. I hate when people are late.

-”Really?” said Mr. Weasley's voice excitedly. “Eclectic, you say? With a plug? Gracious, I must see that...”

-Arthur is a good man. I love how he's shocked that the Dursleys won't even say goodbye to Harry.

-Dudley could have died from that trick. A swollen tongue like that could have suffocated him.

Ch. 5
-How cute is Crookshanks chasing gnomes?

-Bertha is mentioned at dinner. Percy says Crouch is fond of her. Crouch knows she went missing in Albania so he's probably worried that she came across Voldemort and Voldemort knows that Crouch Jr is alive... which is exactly what happened. Also, Percy is such a smug ass.

-Fred and George sent dragon dung to Percy. Dear lord...

Ch. 6
-Splinching sounds terrible.

-A lot of exposition on the walk.

-Cedric won't be telling his grandkids anything.

-The Lovegoods are mentioned. Can't wait for Luna to be introduced.

Ch. 7
-I really enjoy Harry's time at the campsite. It's the first time we get to see wizards outside of Hogwarts. The world is expanding!

-The conversation with Archie and the nightgown always slays me.

-Omnioculars sound cool.

Ch. 8
-Winky's just hanging out in the top box with Barty Jr. NBD.

-I enjoy the Quidditch matches but I'm kind of glad for a break in this book.

Ch. 9
-Draco makes it painfully obvious that his parents are nutters in the masks. His attitude is so nonchalant.

-A lot happens in this chapter with Crouch, Winky, and Crouch Jr. that is explained later.

-Mrs. Weasley is flip-flops with Skeeter. She's quick to attack Skeeter when she writes something awful about Arthur but she believe Skeeter's crap about Hermione quickly.

Dara (cmdrdara) That's a great picture, Alex!

Kat | 1178 comments Reading in trees is awesome. I used to have a favourite tree for reading in the field across from my parents house. It had a massive trunk and huge branches, so you could actually lean back and put your feet up without much balancing effort.

Note to self: Plant a reading tree for my future offspring to use.

I think Frank just serves as the camera. Not entirely random though. He worked for Voldemort's grandparents.

message 18: by Dara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) Bryce is a random Muggle.

We learned that Voldemort was a Parseltongue in Chamber of Secrets.

Rowling is great at humor. It's innate and natural, never forced.

I think magic is exhausting like a hard workout and solving complex math for 4 hours.

message 19: by Bill (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bill | 1596 comments I kind of laughed when Harry choose to send the letter to Sirius. I was reading "someone like a parent: an adult wizard whose advice he could ask without feeling stupid, someone who cared about him, who had had experience with Dark Magic..." And I immediately thought why not Lupin? It makes so much more sense than Sirius.

Lupin
- taught Harry defense against the dark arts for a year
- taught Harry how to fight off dementors
- comforted him when he was lonely from being left out of the hogsmede trip
- gives him back the marauders map

Sirius
- Harry's godfather
- met Harry once
- wrote Harry two letters

Yup Sirius makes sense.

Shh. Stop using logic!

Suzanne | 1582 comments Good thought Bill - that totally hadn't crossed my mind, but Lupin WOULD have been a more logical choice.

message 22: by Dara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) I never thought of Lupin there. Good point!

message 23: by Bill (last edited Oct 07, 2014 09:02PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bill | 1596 comments I think this is the first time I thought of Lupin there.

Finally finished the first section. I have had zero time to read lately really sucks.

I don't really understand why the Weasley's are so poor. Mr. Weasley is a government employee so you figure he makes a decent wage. Bill and Charlie both seem like their jobs would pay well and Percy is now working for the government as well. Seems like they would be better off then they are.

Also why don't they use magic to expand the inside of their house like they did with their car and tent?

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
I always assumed they did use magic to exposing their house..

message 25: by Dara (last edited Oct 08, 2014 07:03AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) I think the Weasleys are poor because Mr. Weasley's department is small so he likely has a smaller wage than mid-level employees. Also the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office seems to be looked down upon because it deals with Muggles. I don't know how much it costs to keep magical kids. They spend most of the year at Hogwarts and as far as I know, there's no tuition, just the expense of clothes and school supplies. I don't think they have any traditional bills. No electricity, gas, water, cable, etc. It's an interesting question, Bill.

message 26: by Dara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) How does Hogwarts make money to pay the teachers?

message 27: by Dara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) I'm really curious about it. And it makes me Hermione-angry about the house elves. Hundreds of students plus the teachers to care for - laundry, cleaning classrooms, dorms, bathroom, doing all cooking - and they aren't paid or even recognized for their work. I'm ready for my S.P.E.W. badge now.

message 28: by Bill (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bill | 1596 comments Judging from how they take it over in later books I would think it was financed by the Ministry of Magic. Also Hogwarts probably saves a lot of money by employing slave labor in the house elves.

Yeah I understand it serves the story well. I think this is my fourth reread of the series and while I ususally just read it for the surface story as an enjoyable book. This time due to the disscussion I am noticing so many plot holes and more of the seedier elements of the story.

message 30: by Dara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) Same for me, Bill. I'm picking up on things that I missed in the past, especially in this book.

We're way overanalyzing things, but I'm enjoying it still.
