Elizabeth (Alaska) "Sorry, only a super-librarian can combine or separate a book with more than 10000 reviews."

Is this a new policy/feature? Will we need a new separate thread for these requests?

There have certainly been quite a few requests for such a limitation.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rivka, this has apparently been instituted. See the Heart of Darkness thread. Banjomike was able to combine in that instance, but any of the rest of us who tried got the 10k review message.

How can we best facilitate things in this instance? If we encounter duplicates, we won't be able to separate and merge. We won't be able to separate adaptations. Combining may not be such a problem now with the new add a new edition feature, but there may still be instances.

Will the supers prefer us to leave notes such as "Adaptation, needs to be separated". Then will you want a continuing thread as in the deletes, or a new post for each main work?

I checked, and this has actually been in place for quite a long time. Not sure why people have not run into it before -- unless they have and no one bothered to post here about it? It won't affect many books, but it will prevent some problems.

Several of our active supers already work some of the combine threads. Whether a new dedicated thread would be best is really something they should weigh in on.

Interesting. I worked for 3 days last week on Pride and Prejudice. Separated quite a few adaptations and never once did I get the restrictions. 10k reviews isn't very many, I suspect it could happen quite often, but I'll be happy to spend time in less frequented areas of the site.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments I think I would prefer a separate thread along the lines of the please delete this book thread. I tend to leave combines / separates to others since there is other stuff only supers can do. That way it is easier to monitor and do

Rivka, could this just apply to editions and not to books? If so, that could definitely be the reason I haven't run into it before and that it would be an infrequent occurrence. Also, if so, the alert should be reworded.

Not according to what I was told.

Z-squared | 8576 comments I've definitely run into this before I became a super. But only rarely, and only ridiculously popular books (e.g., Twilight). I believe it is editionp-specific.

I'm not sure a separate thread is a good idea, since its occurrence is pretty rare. Better to either post to the super deletion thread or just start a new thread with 'superlibrarian needed' in the title.

Then maybe we should report a bug, because it isn't working properly, at least not as to separating.

I believe it applies to resulting books, not what you start with. So if you separate off one or two editions with 1000 shelvings between them, that should work.

Thanks - yes, that would make it have fewer and fewer occurrences.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments GR does not remove books that are no longer available, nor do we change covers on published books.

A read of the manual May help

It is also worth remembering that doing 'private' jobs for authors can be a really bad idea.
