Sandra | 4734 comments Looks like Ellora's Cave could be in financial trouble and using Lawsuits to quieten the talk.

Here's a link to The Digital Reader ~ http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/09...

I suggest if you were thinking of buying any of Ellora's Caves' book, you get in quick, cause if they do fold you might never see some of those books again.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I feel sorry for the EC employees and writers. Dear Author is coming out looking good right now as they are only stating what is going on, sort of sticking up for the little guy.

message 3: by Oleander (new)

Oleander | 27 comments Considering how popular erotica was after 50 shades, they must have done some really screwball bad management.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Oh that looks ugly!

***updated*** didn't I hear Jaid Black was looking for a new publisher because she no longer wants to write about sex??

@Darcy yeah I am not sure what they hope to gain by going after them??

@Oleander I wonder if their sales fell because some of the big series started getting pick up by bigger publishers and the rise in self publishing where erotic PNR books were often free or 1.99...having said that EC has the weirdest pricing so I don't mean to imply they are completely blameless.

You know Ellora's Cave started so many good series, New Zorn Warriors, New Species, Breeds, Tales of the Shareem,Trek Mi Q'an, and on and on

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments So now I feel conflicted I was just over at the EC website trying to figure out which books I want but then I thought wait in the article it said EC is not paying commissions so now I am torn about buying a book that is not paying the author vs getting a book I may not be able to find in the future.

BTW I found it ironic they are still accepting new submissions

It is a catch 22.

It really is!!

This is great I am supposed to be working on a report but I have writers block so I am procrastinating with this instead :-)

First off it hit the LA Times, wow that seems really big http://www.latimes.com/books/jacketco...

Second some authors like Cat Grant are asking people not to buy their books

Both of those are great articles. It's a wonder more authors don't speak out like Cat Grant.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments @Darcy I wonder if they obligated to be quiet?

Bragging about things you can buy while not paying those who support your lifestyle is so not cool.

You might be right about the author's, it could look like sour grapes.

As for the owners of EC, I love how once again FB has outed someone for their bad behavior. When will people ever learn.

Sandra | 4734 comments Hearing more of the story just breaks my heart for all those authors, editors & cover artists.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments What makes it completely sad is this company was so cool when it started

message 13: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments I always liked the offbeat stuff they published but the prices were crazy.

I've "bought" all Laurann Dohner's stuff using the ARE buy 10 get one free offer.

Waiting now for Darkness to be posted, but I'm wondering whether they'll put it over there for purchase now.

I preordered that one and Smiley now I wonder if I should cancel Smiley...

Sad right

Sandra | 4734 comments Just picked up Darkness.

message 18: by Alisa (new)

Alisa Here is another article about it

http://dearauthor.com/ebooks/the-curi...

and a post from author Avril Ashton also asking people not to buy her books. I liked her blog post. It was right to the point.
http://avrilashton.com/blog/on-royalt...

This whole thing is really unfortunate imo. I don't blame the authors. I would be furious if I worked and didn't get paid for it. I personally won't buy anything else from them. That's sucky for readers also because it stops us from buying books. Fortunately for me there is nothing I'm really wanting to read by one of their authors right now.

I wonder if it will hold up Smiley? I'm super annoyed cuz we've waited all this time for a primate book.

message 20: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Yep, I have been as well. Go Primates!!!! LOL.

LD's books are the only ones I'm interested in from EC, at the moment.

I like the author's blog. It's bad that she has to do that.

message 22: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Lauran Dohner bought a second house to use to write in. Uh oh!

message 23: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Well, I don't feel quite so bad then :)

message 24: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments @Alisa and Sandra so in agreement about the Smiley book lol

Thanks for posting the Avril Ashton blog Alisa that is just so messed up on so many levels.

message 25: by Alisa (new)

Alisa Did you guys notice that in the forward of Smiley (New Species, #13) by Laurann Dohner the author talks about how great Ellora's Cave has been to her? Guess she's getting her royalties and I don't have to feel guilty for buying the book.

message 26: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Haven't looked at Smiley yet, got to read Darkness first. Got Smiley for free at ARE books like normal, so Ellora's Cave is presumably paying for it :)

message 27: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa (veronicadelrosa) Yeah, I was wondering if that means she was still getting paid. Guess EC doesn't want to piss off all the big earners. *laughs*

message 28: by Alisa (new)

Alisa @Veronia....yeah that's what I was thinking.

@Sandra......man I went nuts at ARE's 50% off sale on Halloween day. Plus I got my free book when you buy 10. :)

message 29: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments Alisa, Yep!!!! LOL

message 30: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments You know now that you mention it she does. I was so focused on the stroke.

@Sandra how do you get free bonds from ARE? I thought all they had are sales.

message 31: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments As Alisa mentioned, buy 10 get 1 free.

I work it so the most expensive book is free. You can buy cheap books but the one you order for free can be expensive, there is no $ limit.

So, I got all LD's books for free, both New Species & Cyborg Seduction and Zorn Warriors & Mating Heat. Plus many others over the years.

message 32: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I do the same thing Sandra. I hit them on their big sales since those books will still count towards the buy 10 get one free thing. I have a list of expensive books I want and I then pick those up when I hit 10.

message 33: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Oh I see...ok I need to start working this system better lol.
Typically I just look at the price of one book and see it cheaper elsewhere and then I move on.

Thanks Alisa and Sandra!

message 34: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments I still buy elsewhere if its cheaper. Also if something is in epub only I go to Amazon, cause I can't handle epub for some reason. But there is enough of interest to grab the freebie quite regularly :)

Definitely worth checking out Dawn.
