Paul Meek (establishmindfulness) | 4 comments Hi All,

Nice to meet other people interested in the Buddha's teachings. I'm from England and have been practising and following Buddhism for about 19 years now. I currently attend a monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition regularly and meditate daily. I've recently discovered I don't know where meditation is going which is quite wonderful, because I spent years thinking I knew what it was all about and now after 19 years feel like I finally have a beginner's mind again!

Monika Luukkonen (monikaluukkonen) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Monika. I live in Northern Finland and I listen to a lot of audio books (by Thich Nhat Hanh or Pema Chödrön) while I take long walks and read books on Buddhism. My interest started back in 2006 while I was living in London (UK) and I happened to listen to Thich Nhat Hanh's The Art of Mindful Living (it's still my favourite source on Buddhism).

I also write non-fiction books for the Japanese market.

Hi Monika, have you heard of the Thai Forest Tradition as they do a lot of audio material for people to listen to. There is an English branch based in the UK that does it all in English Language if that is helpful? http://www.amaravati.org/audio-and-bo...

Hi Abi, I've been practising mindfulness for 19 years now and started due to feeling really low and negative about everything. It has been an interesting journey and nowadays I can see through both negative and positive thoughts as just being thoughts. The stillness behind them is the key, it is neither negative or positive, it is a bit like silence, it just is and that has a calming effect on the mind. Any questions ask anytime.

Laurie Zolas Thank you, Trevor. This is the first post in quite some time that wasn't advertising something. Please feel free to post what you feel. It would be especially nice to have a discussion of Thay's work and how it has influenced us.

Hi Trevor and Laurie.

I started learning meditation nine years ago, took some DBT classes two years ago, and started learning about Buddhism ~three months ago.

I'm always interested in book recommendations about Zen Buddhism. I recently finished The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation by Thich Nhat Hanh and am slowly working through The Gateless Gate and Zen Master Raven The Teachings of a Wise Old Bird by Robert Aitken

I have nothing more to add right now, so I will say, "Mu".

Laurie Zolas The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation by Thich Nhat Hanh The Heart of the Buddha's Teachings is a wonderful book. I haven't read the Gateless Gate. What first introduced me to Thich Nhat Hanh's teacings was Plum Village Chanting and Recitation Book by Thich Nhat Hanh or actually an earlier version of it. I used it for personal rituals during a difficult time and for the first time had a regular sitting practice. There are chants for many different situations, and chants to begin sitting mediation. I especially liked the "Love Meditation" (also known as Metta Verses) and the "Five Remembrances". I also read one of the discourses each day. This was right around the time of 9/11.

Thank you, Laurie. :) Someone recently recommended me The Gateless Gate by Robert Aitken. But I am on page 92 of The Gateless Gate The Classic Book of Zen Koans by Wumen Huikai by another author. :)

I've added the book you mentioned above (I'll probably buy it in November). I have a friend on GoodReads who is a big fan of Plum Village. :)

Laurie Zolas The Plum Village Chanting and Recitation book is good, but I have to warn you that it isn't exactly written to just sit down and read through. There are chants for many different occasions, many that can be used daily. I hope you find it helpful.

Robert K. | 1 comments Hi, I'm a writer and social worker who's been meditating & learning about Buddhism for a year and a half since my sister in law turned me onto the headspace app.

I practice Vipassana insight meditation. I've read "Seeking the Heart of Wisdom" by Joseph Goldstein & Jack Kornfield and "Why Buddhism is True" by Robert Wright. I also listen to the amazing podcast "the Insight Hour with Joseph Goldstein". I've also learned a great deal from this website:
http://www.vipassanadhura.com/dhammat...

I fell in love with the empirical aspect of Buddhism and its emphasis on experiential knowledge and have been working on incorporating meditation into my daily life. I usually meditate in my car before work and its been a wonderfully frustrating challenge to deal with the hindrances with the all noise and bustle of a busy parking lot!

Thanks!
