ok so the book focuses on a half mage set in the present. his best friend is a changeling, he meets an amazon and falls in love with merlins daughter. turns out any technology such as floppy disks or calculators can be used as weapons against magical enemies.

Sounds like Robert Weinberg's A Logical Magician. There's also a sequel, A Calculated Magic.

I always liked those. It's a shame he never wrote more in the series.

while the hellequin books are good it was Robert weinbergs book that I was looking for. so thanks for that peter
