---SPOILERS---

Thanks Gail for the incite into this book. I kept waiting for the incest to happen between Duval and the Duchess, to no avail. But the outstanding question being who is Ismae's father, the Duke? ...must read book two.

I really enjoyed the strong female characters in this book and loved that Ismae found balance in her profession towards the end. I do wish the author would have shown a bit more of their assassin training instead of skipping over most of it.

Starting the re-read of Finishing School.

Viktoria | 33 comments I'm about half way through the audio book.

Enjoying so far and very grateful for Gail's wish-I-knew-before-I-read list. My one complaint, "merde". This girl needs to expand her exclamation and cursing vocabulary!

I enjoyed this book. Though I loved the tiny crossbow and want one! All the weapons and poisons were cool actually.

But I thought the ending was too abrupt and the world building could have been improved. Really, I wanted to know more about the convent and Death and didn't care for the intrigue as much. The naivety of Ismea kinda irked me at points too.

Mel (CaramelQueen) | 1 comments I loved this book. I was really intrigued and it kept me flipping the pages to see what would happen. But I didn't really like the ending it just didn't make any sense to me. I expected the ending to have a finalized end to Ismae's story. I also really wanted to know more about the convent and St Mortain. I could contain the naivety of Ismae because the only life she's ever known was in the walls of the convent. The romance was well done in my opinion. All in all this book is a solid 4 stars for me.

I found the first part a little difficult to read but after the time skip I couldn't stop! I was up all night finishing it. I think I'll try and read the next one before the third one is released. I found it very difficult to figure out how factual this series is though. It feels strangely set in a fantasy world for all it seems to be historical.

I agree with others that I would have liked more about her life at the convent: training, relationships/friendships, and daily life. Perhaps we'll get more in the following 2 books. I did like the love story but best of all I liked that they didn't get married and live happily ever after. Boring! I love that she had choices and he respected that.

Gail Carriger (gail_carriger) | 103 comments Hello my darlings! I have posted my reviews of both Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph here on Goodreads and to my blog. Contains spoilers for Grave Mercy. http://gailcarriger.blogspot.com/2014...

It seems I agree with many of you in wanting more of the training part. I suspect it was removed for pace reasons. Perhaps if we are lucky Robin will write a short story featuring some of that.

I actually didn't have a problem with the ending. I think it fits Ismae's character that she has been on this journey to find herself and as such, not quite a whole woman yet, she is not ready to commit herself fully to Duval. I think it puts her in the position of power in their relationship, and I like that.
