Oh, thanks Jean. It definitely wasn't there when I looked earlier. Perhaps the page was being adapted or something? Yes, he's Ian McMillan's son(, the Bard of Barnsley Football Club amongst many other attributes!)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) The book links from the comments box don't always work, sadly. Anyway it's there now :) I love that moniker!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Librarians, I have a sticky one for you to sort out.

Nigel Nicholson who died in 2004 wrote all the books which appear on this Wiki bibliography link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_N...

Books by another Nigel Nicholson, see 'Thematic Interests' on this link http://faculty.london.edu/nnicholson/... have been incorrectly attached to Nigel Nicholson. Most of these books have been published after 2004.

Hoping you can sort this out:)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Author Sue Miller: her book Inventing the Abbotts and Oher Stories should be 'Inventing the Abbotts and Other Stories'.

World Below should be The World Below.

Thanks:)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Rescue is required. This novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is attributed to the wrong author. The correct author is Mary Ann Shaffer, some editions have a forward by Annie Barrows.

Barrows did not write this book, Shaffer did. Barrows merely helped with the publication.

I will add Shaffer as the primary author but Barrows did more than just help with the publication. Here is what it says on Shaffer's author page:

"Mary Ann Shaffer worked as an editor, a librarian, and in bookshops. Her life-long dream was to someday write her own book and publish it. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was her first novel. Unfortunately, she became very ill with cancer and so she asked her niece, Annie Barrows, the author of the children’s series Ivy and Bean, as well as The Magic Half, to help her finish the book. Mary Ann Shaffer died in February 2008, a few months before her first novel was published. "

Actually it turns out that this particular Kindle edition doesn't exist so I just deleted it.

Myst | 494 comments Could a librarian please add the number of pages to the following book?

Strangers In The Night (includes Beyond Twilight - Wings in the Night, #4) by Anne Stuart

It has 377 pages, as evidenced from amazon's page (and I just finished reading it):
http://www.amazon.com/Strangers-Night...

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments This book about Hamlet by Shakespeare is a study book rather than the original story but appears as such. link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Is this correct?

message 313: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments B the BookAddict wrote: "This book about Hamlet by Shakespeare is a study book rather than the original story but appears as such. link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

It says this in the blurb: "Along with an authoritative text of a major literary work, each volume presents critical essays, selected or prepared especially for students"

So it sounds to me like the text of Hamlet is in the book AND study materials.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

As you can see the picture is a completely different book by a different author (even though iBooks are offering the book with this cover for sale as a book by Joyce Cary, I've downloaded it and it definitely isn't the novel!)

While I agree with you that this cover is for a different book, the last time I changed a cover I got a nasty email from the GR management scolding me. So I am not going to try fixing this one -- sorry Gill!

Gill | 5719 comments I think these are two editions of the same book?

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

And

One of them has Greywolf Press down as the author, by mistake.

Fixed the author of the Kindle edition and combined it so it shows up as another edition of the book rather than a separate entry.

Gill | 5719 comments Please can someone add this addition

http://www.faber.co.uk/9780571288465-...

to the kindle edition of the book, which as far as I can see is the only one listed. Don't know if you can make this the main one, since it's already published and the kindle one isn't.

This is the only one I can find on GR

Thanks

Btw, do you need to be a librarian to combine editions or is it something I could do myself?

You do have to be a librarian. Someone has combined the editions for "The Fortunes".

Meran | 80 comments Hey Good Guys, can you help me out?
A friend (in life) has requested to friend me here. I accepted (I've known him for oh 16 yrs?) Yet, an error happens every time!
I'll go through it again, then edit this post, so you can see the exact wording of the error.)

I'm back. This was the exact line:

DismissSorry, there was an error approving that friend request.

He can't delete it on his end. Btw, that error message only comes up when I return to the homepage.

Do you think you could help out? Thanks!

That is outside my abilities but why not send GR a message? I have found that they respond fairly promptly especially to technical issues like that.

Here is a link to the Help page -- if you don't see your problem listed, click on the "Contact us" link on the upper right (underneath "Still have a question?") and you can send a message.

dely | 5214 comments Can another librarian look into this because I'm not that sure.
I started reading Friars and Filipinos by José Rizal and I see that it has been combined with the original work, Noli Me Tángere. But they shouldn't be combined because abridged editions should not be combined with the original work.
Someone has combined also An Eagle Flight: A Filipino Novel that is an adaptation of Noli Me Tángere. These editions should be separated too or am I wrong?

message 345: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments dely, I've had a look at a discussion in the Librarians' Group, and it confirms that abridged versions SHOULD be combined with original works. Hopefully someone else can answer re adaptations.

message 346: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments Just found something re adaptations. They should be listed with the name of the adapter as author, not with the name of the original author. So yes, they should be separated, dely.

message 347: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments Thanks Gill! I think I won't touch anything for now also because I'm always on a hurry and I really don't want to make something wrong.

message 348: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) From the Librarian Manual: (Section entitled "How to combine, separate, and merge editions")

"do combine:
Different publications of the same book.
Different formats of the book (hardcover, paperback, audio).
Editions/translations of the book in other languages. Even though many translations differ significantly, we've made the decision to combine them all, and have people note the differences in their reviews.

don't combine:
2-in-1 books or boxed sets that include the given book.
Cliff notes or other works about the given book.
Adaptations. The book should remain separated from its parent work, with the adaptor listed as primary author."

message 349: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Thanks Jean! I am glad to see the confirmation about adaptations as I went to some trouble a few months ago to separate out Tartuffe: Born Again, a modern adaptation of Moliere's classic.

message 350: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments An interesting thing with the books that dely was talking about, is that the adaptation is by the same author as the original.
